Pride can’t fall half so fast as the man who acts today on the basis of his luck yesterday. For so long that I can’t remember when it began, I have made smug comments about my various adventures in and around home, poking about in places I had no business being and getting some quiet fun out of it, never mind the account of the time I should have been written up and wasn't.

I'm interested in but not supportive of Jim Baxter's Citizens’ Coalition for Rational Traffic Laws (Roundup, July, 1983). I drive a truck for a living and a motorcycle for pleasure. While doing both I see many inept drivers who are a peril to themselves and everyone around them.

Sinisalo boots
$157.95
Sinisalo MX boots feature interior plastic plates at the toe and heel. They are heavily padded around the ankles and inside the calf. A steel shank strengthens the sole from toe to heel. Speed laces help close the front flap, two Velcro and two steel buckles help speed on and off time. They cost $157.95 and come in yellow, black, red, blue or, (are you ready for this?) white! Adult sizes 6-13 and kids 1-5 ($105.95) are offered. See your dealer or contact Sinisalo USA, 15510 Rockfield Blvd., Unit C, Irvine, Calif. 92714. Phone (714) 768-0661.
Sinisalo USA
Harley-Davidson FXR/FXRS Air Shocks
$149.95
Harley chrome plated shocks feature air adjustability (up to 50 psi), protective shock rubbers and four-position adjustable damping. They are available at Harley-Davidson dealers for $149.95 to fit FXR and FXRS models.
Sinisalo USA
Superbike jumper cables
$12.95
These jumper cables are 12 ft. long, made of 12 gauge insulated cable and fitted with color coded clips. The manufacturer claims they will jump start any car or motorcycle and can be easily stored on a motorcycle. They cost $12.95 at dealers or contact Cycle-Lite Corp.,
Sinisalo USA
Total protection knee and shin guards
$32.50
These shin/knee guards wrap around the side of the rider’s calves and ankles, cover the shins and knees, and the area between. The outer shell is impact-resistant plastic, the inside is padded by a layer of foam. They are adjustable for length and come in two sizes, adult and youth. They are designed to be worn under leathers or Levis. When used with leathers, the standard protectors are discarded. Once these beauties are on and your boot buckled, it almost feels as if your leg is in a cast, but movement isn’t restricted. If you’re after the best in protection, even without normal leathers, try these. They work. They go for $32.50 at dealers or from Malcolm Smith, 7563 Indiana Ave., Riverside, Calif. 92503. Phone (714) 687-1300.
Sinisalo USA

Windshields are neat. Once upon a time the plain shield, a slightly curved assembly that attached to the bars and forks, was all the weather protection you could get. Then modern plastics and fiberglass and production techniques and more reliable bikes came together in the frame-mount fairing and the windshield was what the old guys used.

What a difference a decade makes. Ten years ago motocross riders were happy if their tires were round and black and had bumps on them. When the tires were slick, it was time for a new one. Sure, there were a few competitors who knew tires weren’t all the same.

Deceptive isn't the first word that comes to mind when looking at the Suzuki GS550ES. New engine, race-bred fairing, sparkling blue and white paint, all indicate sport, that is speed and power. Start it up and cruise off down the street for the first ride and the first impression is likely to be disappointment.

There have been signs recently that big street bikes have entered the age of too much. Too much horsepower and torque for their chassis to handle. Too much attention to chopper styling, which gets in the way of function. Too much attention to different, futuristic styling, again, looks interfering with function.

As seen in the March Cycle World, this project started out simply enough: make a 1982 Yamaha Seca 650 fast enough to run with the newer 650 Fours. Getting good dragstrip times was easy enough, but retaining streetable power throughout the power band proved more difficult.
