Today's example of life's little lessons begins with an incredible streak of bad luck. We destroyed the cover bike in a testing session at the track. Then we went to the desert to photograph enduro bikes and had two flat tires within minutes.
Letters to the editor are welcomed and should be addressed to: Cycle World Editor, 1499 Monrovia Ave., Newport Beach, Calif. 92663. All letters are subject to editing and cannot he returned. I've never had any interest in side hacks as a form of motorcycling but I thoroughly enjoyed The Road to Prescott in the July issue.
How fast, and how far a motorcycle can travel depends not so much on who builds the engine, but on what shape the engine is in. Shape, in this case, refers not to the number of miles since the last tuneup, but to the hulk that engine drags through the air.
From Street to Track and Back, the Eddie Lawson Replica Looks Like a Champion Superbike
Big, bright green motorcycles are about as hard to ignore as pink elephants. Especially if you happen to be Wes Cooley or Mike Baldwin or Roberto Pietri and that big, bright green motorcycle is Eddie Lawson's. But since Lawson won the AMA Superbike Championship last year on the greenest Kawasaki KZ1000 ever seen, more green Kawasakis have been appearing, first at racetracks around the country and now on the street.
Kawasaki's Real Eddie Law son Replica, the KZ1000S1
This Out-Of-The-Crate Racebike Needs Some Work...But It's Close.
If Rhys Howard's Superbike looks remarkably like Eddie Lawson's, it's no accident. Howard's bike, like the 29 other Eddie Lawson Replica KZ1000S1 racebikes built this year, is outwardly identical to Lawson's. In fact, Lawson and Team Kawasaki teammate Wayne Rainey ride Eddie Lawson Replicas.
"Why would you want to go to the Isle of Man?" the voice on the other end of the phone asked me. "It's a cruel, dangerous place to race and most of the top international riders avoid it. Why don't you go to Assen instead and see some real racing?" "I want to go because it's the last real roadrace," I explained.
Despite dozens of fairing manufacturers offering scores of different designs, there have still been some empty places in the line-up, some motorcycles which no fairing fits. Now, though, thanks to the Rifle fairing, there are fewer gaps.
It's Gone From a Song of Protest to a Core of Motorcycling
It's a little bit of heaven right here on earth—at least to those who ease a week's worth of aggravation with a weekend of high-speed, backroad motorcycle racing. It's known to San Francisco Bay area cognoscenti simply as Alice's Restaurant.
When enduro bikes had license plates and enough suspension travel to traverse painted crosswalks without bottoming the suspension, Suzuki became one of the first large motorcycle companies to build motocross-derived enduro machines.
You Remember Us. We're the Folks Who Didn't Go 200mph at Bonneville. Now We Haven't Gotten 200 mpg.
Yes, friends, there is a 200 mpg carburetor. I've seen it, and watched the motorcycle equipped with it. Honest people have carefully measured hundredths of a gallon of gasoline filling the gas tank on the 200 mpg motorcycle after it had ridden up the coast of California at normal highway speeds.
Full-Floater Rear Suspension Comes to Dual Purpose Bikes With a New 250cc Suzuki Four-Stroke
When Suzuki decided in 1978 to upgrade their entries in the dual purpose market, they hoped to make one step take the place of two: the smaller models remained two-strokes, as in the established TS line, but the new entry, a four-stroke, displaced 370cc.
Suzuki's new DR250 is just like the street-legal SP250—more or less. Because the DR is strictly a playbike, not for road use unless you're lucky enough to live in a state where if it's got a headlight they'll sell you a license plate, the more and the less are both the result of intended use.
Motorcycle Engines Run Hot and They're Hard on Oil, but That's No Reason to Panic. It's Not as Bad as You Think.
There's more to oil than pouring it out of a can and into a motorcycle. Before he can even get that far, a rider is faced with decisions. Is it better to run 10w-40 or 20w-50 or SAE 40 or what? Is synthetic better than mineral oil, and if so, is it enough better to be worth the extra price?

For the past 10 years, I have owned nothing but chain-driven bikes, and frankly, I'm getting tired of the old chain maintenance religion. O-ring chains are an improvement but they still need lubrication (which ends up all over the back of the bike) and periodic adjustment, and are rather expensive to replace at $85 a crack.
Harley-Davidson touring motorcycles have for years been affectionately called "hogs." In February, a Harley-Davidson ad appeared, featuring a ceramic "hog" piggybank in the shape and design of a Harley-Davidson gas tank. The ad generated hundreds of letters and phone calls to the Harley-Davidson advertising department, requesting to purchase the prop used in the ad. Rather than auction off the original, the company has produced more banks which, are available exclusively through authorized Harley-Davidson dealerships at $29.95. As the saying goes, "this little piggy went to market."
