Following the termination of one of those meetings, the ones in which you consume an afternoon deciding nothing, I slumped wearily out of the building and threw a leg over the Yamaha 920. I inserted the key, turned it. Nothing. A full assortment of lights stood mute.

I've just finished reading John Ulrich's outstanding story on sidecar racing (September, 1981). It's a fine job of reporting on what the sport is all about. My father was a sidecar racer in Europe and I have been active in this sport for the past 30 years.

Look closely at the photos of the new Harley-Davidson FXRS and there’s something you won’t see. It’s not as noticeable as the all-new frame or the rubber-mounted engine or the five-speed transmission or the extra oil drain lines. It doesn’t even stand out as much as the raised white letter Dunlop K181 tires or the new controls.

Henry N. Manney III
The name Matchless undoubtedly means little to the generation of today but the subhead “once the largest British motorcycle manufacturer” speaks volumes. Matchlesses were quite the vogue here in California during the later '40s and early ’50s as they were big sturdy thumping bikes doing battle with Beezers, Triumphs and the like, easily modified and heavily promoted by West Coast Distributor Cooper Motors who should have been given an OBE by the Queen.

Steve Kimball
Right and wrong are most often determined by what our mother told us, or what the law lets us get away with and sometimes by our ability to figure out how to get what we want. Except motorcycle riding isn't like that. We learn what won't work when we try too much brake and discover a skidding tire doesn't work as well as a non-skidding tire.

I ride a 1974 BMW R90/6 which started leaking engine oil from the bottom of the flywheel housing shortly after it passed the 20,000 mi. mark. Replacing the rear oil seal on the crankshaft and the O-ring on the oil pump cover (complete with gasket sealer on the perimeter of the cover and Loctite on the screws) solved the problem for approximately 1000 mi.

Yamaha’s new 750 Seca presents special problems for an owner who wants to add a fairing. The square head and driving lights, plus covered handlebars, make normal fairings unusable. The unit features four-point rubber mounting, gray tinted acrylic shield, and hand laminated fiberglass construction with a black gel-coat finish. Price is $169.95 from Action Fiberglass, CW-12, 2427 Sam Road, Jacksonville, Fla. 32216. Phone (904) 641-7071.
