Henry N. Manney III
Too bad all these lovely books don’t come in the fall so that we could have a good read in front of the fire with cat in the lap, glass of Williamine alongside, and Boreas doing his worst around the eaves. Still, as Geoff says, we must accept good fortune when it comes and so it is with Haynes’ latest offering, another tome on Triumph by Ivor Davies who actually used to work there.

I am an avid reader of your magazine and a steadfast supporter of motorcycling and anything which could help improve it. Therefore, I'd like to offer a suggestion. It would be a great service if you could follow your companion car publication’s example and include a classified ad section where we readers could find proper homes and owners for our well—cared—for relics and classics.

Turbocharging has been marketing magic for half a generation. Indy cars and Formula One cars have turbos and when smaller engines became required equipment for road cars, the factories got back the performance image, if not the actual performance, by adding exhaust-driven supercharging and writing “TURBO” in large letters across the car’s flanks.

Time waits for no bike. A company introduces a model that appeals to a different segment of the market or out-performs the competition and CYCLE the marque gains sales. Other companies see the model selling and in response build or update an existing motorcycle to compete.

There hasn't been a whole lot of technical advancement in motocross pants since nylon/leather combinations caught on. It didn't take long for most riders to figure out the advantages of the nylon based pants; they offered almost as much protection as all-leather pants yet weighed less, were easier to clean and cost less.

Riding a motorcycle hundreds of miles a day, every day, for 15 years, hardened Dick Van Cott’s attitude. Van Cott is a California Highway Patrolman. He has been riding for 20 years. During most of that time he was a motorcycle cop, riding freeways, giving speeding tickets, investigating accidents and all the time riding hard to stay alive.

Besides transmitting power from the transmission to the rear wheel, the chain drive on a motorcycle affects the rear suspension and vice versa. And as rear suspensions gain in travel the effects of the chain on the suspension and the suspension on the chain have been amplified.

Younger motorcyclists may find this hard to believe, but Japanese motorcycles have not always been the technological leaders in this sport. Riders of greater experience may remember periods of English or Italian racing success, but when motorcycling first began as a sport it wasn’t Japan or Europe that dominated racing and technological achievement, it was America.

The great automobile designer Ettore Bugatti was once criticized for the tiny snuff-can brakes on his fast racing cars and reportedly said, “My cars are made to go, not to stop.” That’s all very fine and cavalier and makes good copy in the papers, but anyone who has raced a car or a motorcycle, or more to the point, tried to stop a motorcycle in front of a left-turning car, knows it’s healthier to ride a machine that has also been made to stop.

Bruce Ogilvie and Larry Roeseler really surprised everyone, including the finish line officials, at this year’s Baja 500. Nobody expected the pair, or anyone else, to complete the grueling 405 mi. loop in six hours and 42 minutes! Bruce and Larry’s Yamaha YZ465H was one of the trickest bikes entered, sporting a minifairing to help them cut through the air at speeds estimated in excess of 120 mph!

GOGGLES
$19.95
Smith’s all-new goggle incorporates features not found on other goggles: the plastic frame has a split V-nose that conforms to almost any face without pinching, discomfort or looseness. Additionally, Smith’s goggles have extra foam filtering around the edges of the frame. Another inovation that’s optional is a lens vented around the sides and top. This feature is claimed to make fogging almost impossible, even when conditions are rainy or moist. Other optional lenses are polarized and anti-fog treated. Price is $19.95 from dealers.
