When my son and I signed up for the Motorcycle Safety Foundation’s beginner rider course, we did so with two public goals. First and foremost was for him to get the best basic training he could get. Next, I thought it would be good for my job if I really knew how rider training works, rather than rely on secondhand accounts.
I have enjoyed reading your magazine and as a woman and a deaf cyclist felt compelled to write before ending my cycling career. After seven years I have been told I must stop riding for medical reasons. Needless to say I am very sorry about this but want to make some points before quitting.
In order to appreciate the awfulness of this pun, you had to be there. To celebrate the independence of Harley-Davidson from AMF, the corporate mother that has protected H-D the past 12 years, the new Harley executives scheduled a freedom ride from York, Pennsylvania to Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
If there existed such an unlikely organization as The Official High Performance 750cc Motorcycle Admiration Society, its club meetings would never have been dull for want of machinery to admire. From the early days of flat track racing through the heyday of the British Twins and right up to the current flock of sporting multis the 750 class has produced more than its share of colorful and exciting offspring.
Introduced Late, But It Won’t Take Long Before They’re At The Head Of The Class.
The latest trend in motocross bike technology is single shock rear suspension. Not an entirely new concept—Yamaha has used a single shock since the early Seventies. But, unlike most new tech, the other major manufacturers were reluctant to follow.
As you can probably tell by these columns, we are trying desperately to build up a library so that the telephone network won’t suddenly go ablaze with questions like “Wot is a TWN?” or “Was there a German Triumph?” or “What in Topet was a Silver Star?” Fortunately, we get quite a few books for review and others we (or me) have to buy.

This is your mother talking. All of us hate paperwork. The only reason lawyers and bankers and bureaucrats seem to love excessive paperwork is because that’s how they earn their livings. We, the freedom-loving motorcycle purists, could give a hoot about paperwork.
Ask any seasoned off-road rider what front tire to use and the answer will almost always be Metzeler. No hesitation or second alternative is usually offered. And Metzeler's reputation is well deserved. Metzeler front tires have been the overwhelming choice of pros for longer than other tire manufacturers care to remember.
Going Fast in Control Means Riding Smoothly. The Secret Is Knowing What Smoothness Is.
The perfect corner, explains road racer Ron Pierce, is when you come into the corner using all the brakes the bike has, you feel the forks flexing back and forth under braking pressure, and you smoothly release the front brake as you lean the bike over more and more until the front brake is off and the front tire is beginning to slip at the apex of the turn.
Serendipity, defined as happy accidents, comes in handy when riding new motorcycles. Yamaha’s sporting XV920 V-Twin is impressive and we’ve got one for a long-term test. That means riding every day under all conditions and that calls for some sort of fairing or weather protection.
Winning (And Living) Means Never Having Your Passenger Fall Off.
Wayne Lougee’s sidecar was sideways in fifth gear, Kawasaki superbike engine straining, two wheels in the dirt outside Riverside Raceway’s first turn, a cloud of dirt and rocks billowing in its wake. His passenger held on in desperation, shoulder an inch from the pavement and eyes wide in disbelief as Lougee piloted his rig in a wide arc around two other sidecars occupying the width of the paved course.

"I was sure I could smell smoke," said Kenny Roberts, "There were still three laps to go and I thought the rear tire was down to the cords. The bike began to move around on the straightaway." Kenny kept going to win the 500cc Italian Grand Prix and took the 15 points that put him on top of the World Championship table after three rounds.
Only hard case historians and bike freaks need apply for this book which is the companion volume and sequel to the same author’s Bikes at Brooklands in Pioneer Years. It is written, however, that only by reading history shall ye know the future so you have been warned.
I read with some amusement the letter in your Service column from Ronald Shortz (June ‘81) entitled the Oiled Filter. I too own a ‘78 Yamaha XS750E and experienced the same problem of blowby oil leaking out the airbox. However, a top end job every 20,000 mi. is really not a very practical solution.
