Busily maintaining my reputation as a man who says the wrong thing at the perfect time, I took advantage of a lull in the conversation at a motorcycle business meeting to announce "I know how to double sales overnight." All within earshot leaned forward, expectant as the people on television when The Broker is about to talk.

Congratulations on your publication of the owner survey article for Ducati V-Twins. The article was very nicely done and should go far in furthering the public’s knwoledge of these Italian-crafted bikes. The survey responses which you received present an overall picture consistent with the views expressed to us by our club members.

Races of all kinds have been run to see which motorcyclist is the fastest. What with Olympiads and Superbiker races being held virtually any rider can prove that a motocrosser or a road racer or a flat tracker, for instance, is the best racer.

California's state government during the past year has been discovering the motorcycle. At first, traffic signs suggested that motorcycles were an efficient means of transportation. Then motorcycles were allowed to use some freeway lanes restricted to busses or carpools.

It's been over two years since Cycle World took a look at a "pocket bike" mini road racer (November, 1978). Only a few of the tiny bikes had made it to this country at the time, and the price (over $500 retail) discouraged would-be importers from bringing in quantities of the 30cc micromotorcycles.

It figures that a guy in the glove business who road races for fun would come up with superior racing gloves. In the case of Casey Kohler, president of Castre, that's exactly what happened. Starting out a product evaluation with such a strong statement—that Castre gloves are superior—may be unusual.

Yamaha's 1980 motocrossers were impressive machines. After years of development on motocross tracks around the world, the production bikes became close replicas of the works bikes. The 125 and 465 won bike of the year awards from CW and the 250 came oh so close.

Gary Van Voorhis
Just in case you haven't heard, the United States did have representatives competing in the olympics. We won five gold, 14 silver and six bronze medals. None of them came from swimming, diving, track and field, horseback riding or any other event in the Summer Olympics and the venue was not Moscow. Our Olympics are the International Six Days Trial, more commonly known as the ISDT. This year the 55th Six Jours Internationaux was held in the countryside surrounding Brioude, a small city in south-central France.

Grandaddy of the Super Enduros

Legendary Jack Pine. Kind of rings, like the cowbell that's been the perpetual overall trophy since the first 500-mile Michigan enduro of that name back in 1923. Every year since, except during World War II and in 1968 (cancelled due to outlaw biker trouble the year before at the overnight layover point), the Lansing Motorcycle Club has treated off-road motorcyclists to the ultimate challenge—two days of 24-mph misery and joy—seemingly endless stretches of deep sand alternating with brush-busting, bar-bending tight going through the pines and hardwoods of the northern half of Michigan’s lower peninsula, forests full of stumps and fallen logs, criss-crossed by creeks and rivers and filled with mudholes that bring instant recall to riders who spent wet, agonizing minutes there learning the meaning of "bogged down."

THE LAST WARRIOR
How Not To Beat The British At Their Own Game
[no value]

Richard Renstrom
Big V-Twins have always fascinated American motorcyclists. Brutish, large, and durable, they have been the trademark of American manufacturers since Indian’s first V-Twin in 1906. With its deep, rumbling exhaust note and a beastly look to its massive lines, the big V-Twin has reflected the traditional American philosophy that big and tough is always better than small and refined.

The knee-Whack Solution
Adding Motocross-Style Knee Cups Removes the Pain From Concrete/Knee Collisions in Road Racing
[no value]

John Ulrich
Knee whacking—the collision of a speeding, extended knee and an immobile concrete edging—is enough to break the concentration of the coolest rider. At Elkhart Lake, a combination of factors made whacked knees a common problem. Huge, slippery pavement patches in each turn limited the available lines through the corners, often to one fast line and one slow line.

Bo O'Brochta is back in the news again, this time for turning an incredible 7.08 sec. ET at the Winston World Finals at Ontario Motor Speedway. It had been a good month for Bo and his Terminal Van Lines-sponsored top fueler. Just two weeks prior to the NHRA car/ bike event at Ontario, O’Brochta put the lid on the number one plate in NMRA bike racing with his win at Atco, New Jersey.

Once again living up to its billing as a made-for-television event, the Superbikers proved to be not road racing, not flat track, not motocross and not speedway. Instead it was a good day of racing, provided heaps of raw material for bench racing and should be a fine television show.
