Allan Girdler
My recent account of how a bunch of us fluttered a feminine heart—or think we did, which is much the same thing in this case—earned me as fine a poison pen letter as it’s ever been my pleasure to read. After making a promising start—“I ride a BSA, wear leathers, subscribe to your magazine, make noise and enjoy being outrageous.”—the lady goes on to heap me with abuse: We committed unspeakable mental torture on that poor woman, she tells me, and then I brag about it, act as if men are men and women can’t resist noisy swaggering louts.

I was overjoyed to see, in print, the same feelings that I’ve enjoyed for the past 12 years. (March, 1980, Up Front) I started riding in Taiwan while stationed with the Army and since then have gone through two BSAs, a Norton, a Yamaha, a Harley, and am on my sixth bike now, a Suzuki GS750.

Somewhere there’s a prayer, or maybe it’s just a folk saying, about how we need more protection from our friends than from our enemies. Whichever, the moral fits motorcycling, as just about the time our critics are put on the defensive by recognition of the motorcycle as an inflation-fighter, we get the worst possible press, thanks to a man who likes bikes.

After years of new motorcycles growing heavier and more complex. Kawasaki’s KZ550 goes the other way. The design goal behind the new KZ seems to have been small, light and simple. With the KZ550, Kawasaki has gotten back to basics and reaffirmed what a sporting motorcycle is all about: function.

Imagine riding the best six big touring bikes available for a month; taking them on trips, taking them to the store, taking them for a Sunday ride. Finally, after thousands of miles and every possible performance test, there are four questions to be answered: Which bike would you choose to ride on a cross-country trip?

Without getting into any arguments, the reason we used a BMW R100T rather than an RT for the test was so the BMW would be equipped with the Luftmeister fairing. That's because we like the Luftmeister, the fairing made in the USA for U.S. riders, better than the RT fairing that didn’t work as well.

Europe’s main attraction can also be part of the problem: Europe, that is, the string-straight roads of France, the Italian mountains passes, the Alps, etc., are so, well, so foreign. Just as Europeans like to come riding here, so do many Americans dream of the day they can tour overseas .

Sure, the factories are now in the touring business. They offer complete packages that bolt right on and you can have them installed when you take delivery of your new machine and the colors all match ... but what the factories think most people want may not be what you want.

Our latest long range bike is a 465 Yamaha YZ. Our long range testing lets us live with selected bikes for 6 months to a year—long enough to find faults and good news about the model. Normally, changes and modifications are recorded and we tell you about them when the long range report is published.

Maico is a small company, as motorcycle makers go, with a big problem: Ever since the appearance of long travel suspension and leading axle forks, Maicos have been the standard by which other motocrossers are compared. Maicos are the bikes the bigger firms buy when they wonder how good their new models really are.

As Beautiful Yet Tacky As Only A Yoshimura Race Bike Can Be.
One Difference Is, When A Rider Says The Bike Is Doing This Or That, Moriwaki Puts On His Leathers And Tries It Himself.
When Honda Says The Daytona Bike Will Have the Same Engine And A New Frame, What They Mean Is, It Will Be A Four-Stroke Painted Red.

This year, for the first time, the AMA will allow 1025cc four-stroke racebikes to challenge 500 and 750cc two-strokes in Winston Pro Series road race main events. A lot of people, including track owners, race promoters and PR men have been calling these four-strokes Superbikes.

I have a 1979 GS850 Suzuki. It is a fantastic bike and handles great. The only problem is that at between 32 and 40 mph the front end shakes badly. The bike has no fairing and is equipped with stock tires. The only thing my dealer did was change the psi in the front forks.

When Kenny Roberts bid farewell to the Winston Pro Series, he did it by laping the field at Daytona. So when Roberts returned to American racing, he needed something to top his previous display. He had it. After a two-year vacation from serious dirt racing, Roberts won the Houston TT, first event in the AMA/Winston 1980 season, and he won it in a thriller, the sort of race that proves you can hold your breath for 25 laps.
