What triggered this incident. I think now, was how I looked at the time. I was on my way home from work, riding a large, quiet, new and shiny touring bike, fitted with a fairing. Because I had the fairing and it was a hot day, I was wearing my open face helmet.

Compromise isn't exactly the right word for the new Honda CB900 Custom, but it's a word that comes to mind. Usually Honda goes its own way, building what it feels are excellent motorcyles and finding that the market usually follows where Honda leads.

When Honda introduced the XR line of full-size playbikes in 1979, there was the big XR500, the middleweight XR250 and the lightweight XR185. The larger two got most of the fancy developments, and the power and the publicity. But somehow when the tests were all done, most of the staff liked the XR185 best.

In some ways, Dick Burleson backed into enduro competition. While he was in high school he shared a bike with a friend and got his first taste of competition racing at the scrambles events popular then in his home state of Michigan. At the University of Michigan his major was mechanical engineering in the winter and motocross during the warm weather months.

Not long ago we thought that any company that could maintain 1979 performance in a 1980 emissions-certified motorcycle deserved a technical achievement award. Now along comes the all-new Suzuki GS750, which is about 0.4 sec. quicker and almost 5 mph faster at the drags than the equivalent 1979 GS750E. But more than building a faster and quicker GS750, Suzuki engineers have altered the entire character of the motorcycle.

Suzuki makes the GS750L for anybody who prefers the semi-chopper look to the fussy, Japanese modern styling of the standard GS750E. The machines share the terrific 16-valve engine and the new frame. But the L-model’s leading-axle forks have softer damping and the rear shock springs are softer still, rated by Suzuki as being 100 lb./in.

Part of our testing program consists of long range uses; we keep certain bikes and use them as our own for six months to a year. These long range bikes are usually Street machines, enduro bikes or large bore motocrossers that have been modified for desert, and trail use. These extended tests give us, and you, a good indication of maintenance costs and problems associated with different models.

June, 1964. The first shipment of a new motorcycle arrived in the United States. It was the Hodaka Ace 90. This virtually unnoticed event set the stage for an epidemic that would sweep the country before the end of the decade. The era of the lightweight, street-legal trailbike had begun! With it came a growing cult of enthusiastic riders and innovators and racers who helped spread dirt riding to every state and who influenced the development of the Hodaka through 16 years of production.

But while the contest went down to the next to last event of the season before being decided, the crown was not won so much in the final half of the season as it was lost—by Springsteen—in the first four Nationals.

Every year before the first hint of cold weather the staff of this magazine assumes that motorcycle nuts are prudent and practical people. We round up the cold weather gear we used the previous winter and we get the stuff just on the market and we duplicate all the chilly riding conditions we can, acting on the assumption that most people get ready for bad weather before their hands turn blue.

Looking out from the doorway of my favorite motorcycle shop, the shop owner and I watched two riders accelerate full throttle down the highway. One of the bikes was brand new with a mere 7 mi. on the odometer. "Oh man!" I said. "It's not even broken in yet."

AIR COMMAND SUSPENSION SYSTEM
S & W Products has an air suspension that allows adjustment and fine tuning of the suspension while moving. Designed for touring or any kind of riding, the Air Command makes it possible to adjust the machine for different loads and conditions with a touch of a button. The Air Command System consists of a small electrically driven air compressor, lines, fittings and instructions. The system will adjust the air pressure in the forks and shocks individually and hooks right up to S & W's air shocks or any shock that's adjustable with air. Same goes for the forks: S & W also has air fork kits for machines that don't come stock with air caps. Check your local S & W dealer or contact S & W Products. CW-3. 2617 Woodland Drive. Anaheim. Calif. 92801.
