Two of our dirt guys went to the road races. Skill and bravery are a universal language so they came home aware that they had seen good riding. They had a good time. And their inexperienced eyes turned up a puzzle: “Why are road racing bikes so tacky?” The question gave me more trouble than the answer.

Once again the “Ten Best Bikes” has hit the pages of Cycle World (October 1979). And once again I have figured out that Honda Motors must own 51 percent of the shares of your magazine. After trying to figure out how Honda can rate so high year after year with your magazine and not the others, that is the conclusion I have come up with.

American Turbo Pak has almost become the byword in motorcycle turbocharging. With good reason. The Santa Ana, California, based company has been connected with some of the most successful turbocharged machines and was instrumental in the production of the only complete turbocharged motorcycle offered for sale, the Kawasaki Z1R-TC. ATP products are well proved in competition too.

Bill Blake offers turbocharger kits for a large variety of motorcycles, including the Yamaha XS750 we keep in the garage as a long-term test bike. The Yamaha initially appears to be an ideal candidate for turbocharging: The plain bearing crankshaft means high oil pump output for the turbo bearings, and the Triple could use more power, whereas larger motorcycles provide little use for more horses.

Funny thing about racks. They are one of the most popular accessories for motorcycles (outsold only by crash bars), yet there is hardly ever anything written about them.
