Allan Girdler
Here is a letter I wish I could have written. Dear Cycle World, I am sixteen years old and have been reading your magazine for a couple of years now. I am always happy to see it come, although my father isn't. I currently ride a Honda Express because it is the only bike my parents let me ride.

A number of federally-funded motorcycle accident studies have been completed recently and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration took the occasion to blitz the media and politicians with a statistical avalanche. Of prime concern to NHTSA is the repeal of helmet laws in many states since the Secretary of Transportation lost the power to withhold federal highway funds from states which didn’t adopt mandatory helmet use laws.

Motorcyclists spend $22.5 million in Mexico every year to be able to ride off road. Why the money is spent outside the United States and what the effect is on the U.S.economy has been analyzed by the American Motorcyclist Association in a report to the Bureau of Land Management about that agency's southern California desert planning.

Regular readers will remember that we last reported on the Phantom Duck of the Desert in March following the Fourth Annual Barstow to Vegas Unorganized Trail Ride. At that time it looked as though our fine feathered friend had flown through a loophole in the Bureau of Land Management's regulations which allows groups of up to 50 people to ride in unorganized events.

Being innovative and being Number One usually don’t go hand-in-hand. We all know Hertz doesn't try harder and Chevy’s novelty turns to Corvairs and Vegas while Ford comes out with Mustangs. And then, of course, there’s Honda. Even after coming out with the revolutionary 750 Four 10 years ago, Honda is accused of selling Universal Japanese Motorcycles, a term so passé it is spoken of as nostalgia.

As you have probably noticed, dear reader, from time to time we like to present a Salon of some bit of significant machinery which has. for better or worse, made its mark on motorcycling history. Such a case was the celebrated Whizzer, of course not a proper motorcycle at all technically speaking but a motorizing kit for bicycles.

Look carefully at a competitive Superbike Production motorcycle and you'll see that it is much farther removed from its stock street origins than first glance would indicate. It has to be, considering that the bikes reach speeds above 150 mph, corner hard enough to drag engine cases on both sides, and brake with enough violence to lift the rear wheel at corner entrances.

Watching, reading about or even discussing the Yoshimura R&D of America Suzuki GS1000 Superbike with its creators is one thing. Riding it is another. I was very interested to read Cycle World's accurate and informative article, "The Rivals" in the September, 1978 issue, and thought readers might like to know my small part of the story. In late 1974. through various unlikely circumstances, I began work restoring Mike Hailwood’s collection of Honda racers.
