Due to a childhood spent in a small New England town with a skinflint school board. I don't believe in prophets or in people who do. In the land of Waste Not, Want Not, skinflint isn't an insult. What the school people did, when I was young, was figure that textbooks were useful until they wore out, that is, when the pages crumbled.

A reader wrote in recently, asking if we had heard that the amount of lead in gasoline was going to be reduced by federal regulation and wondering what would happen to the European bikes which require premium gas. Without getting into the technical details (which are covered in Service) there are a number of important points for motorcyclists.

Motorcycle testing, with one push of a button, changed dramatically. A single computer replaced staging lights, timing lights, dynomometers, stopwatches, tape measures, brake markers and, most importantly, human prejudice. Mounted aboard a red Yamaha XS750 Special, the computer began counting hundredths of seconds the instant the Yamaha moved from the starting line at the dragstrip.

Suzuki introduced its first RM motocrossers in 1975. Most racers considered them good machines and the RMs effectively stopped the Suzuki dirt bike jokes as they cleaned house across the country. The new bikes naturally had their share of problems but the factory quickly backed the originals with the RM-A. It looked the same but had many detail improvements, such as a stronger swing arm and larger airbox access.

As the politicians screw up our lives more and more and every aspect of our existence comes to be regulated by the NO NO Brigade, we Americans seem to be acquiring an appetite for nostalgia. Of course it is easy to forget that Plymouths were $700 out the door in olden days because nobody was making much money.

New motorcycles have been getting bigger and faster and more complicated and more expensive. They create excitement, glamor and pizzaz and there seem to be many buyers who figure that the dazzling technology and incredible power are worth the price paid in initial cost and in maintenance.

We were highly impressed with our 1978 IT250 test bike. It had a potent engine, six-speed gearbox and many ISDT-influenced extras like quick detach wheels and snail chain adjusters. We had a couple of complaints also. Fast riders quickly noticed a lack of steering precision and a tendency to push the front wheel in a slippery corner.

Baja is the playground of a few brave and adventurous riders. It is probably the least understood yet most maligned territory south of the U.S. border. It ranks as one of the least civilized and populated areas in the world and certainly includes some of the emptiest country in the Northern Hemisphere.

Husqvarna
CR250/390
A new, heavily triangulated frame leads the parade for ’79. Made from heat-treated chrome-moly tubing, it sports two large backbone tubes and makes room for a real airbox, a first for Husky. The superbly designed plastic airbox contains a foam filter with 55% more filter area and allows a filter change in less than 10 sec. The frame’s head angle has been steepened again and now measures 30.5.° The large diameter chrome-moly swing arm looks the same but has been widened ½ in. at its front. Suspension travel has taken a big jump and measures 11.8 in. at both wheels. Forks are 35mm diameter, Husqvarna made leading-axle units with springs and air caps to allow adjustability. Remote reservoir Ohlin shocks are furnished and have new softer damping and spring rates. The motors are mostly the same except for new pipes that give wider powerbands, and new transmission ratios for the 390. The wider powerband has allowed the use of the same transmission ratios as those used on the OR models. The CR250 keeps the same ratios as last year.
Husqvarna
125CR
The 125 Husky engine boasts a new cylinder for 1979, and the little 6-speed has adopted last year’s 250 frame and 17 in. rear wheel. Suspension travel measures 9.5 in. at both wheels and the wheel base has been stretched to 57.4 in. A new pipe to complement the new porting, and a blue gas tank lets you know it’s different.
Husqvarna
OR250/390
The new ORs also receive the latest frame and 11.8 in. travel forks. Gas charged Curnutt Shocks are used and provide 11.0 in. of rear wheel travel. A 3-gal. gas tank, folding shift lever and Gunner Gasser throttle mean you have little to add. A new double walled 86db(A) pipe keeps the ORs off-road legal. Like all Huskys, a good side stand is furnished, a much appreciated item when it’s necessary to open a gate or get off the machine for any reason. The new geometry has stretched the wheelbase to 58.5 in. and the seat height to 38 in. We were highly impressed by our 1979 OR test bike. (see Jan. 1979) A tour bus couldn’t be smoother across rough terrain and horsepower is fantastic.
Husqvarna
WR250/390
WRs have also received the new frame/ swing arm package but their wheelbase is shorter (57.3 in.) and wheel travel is 9.5 in. at both ends. The shorter travel (compared to the CRs/ORs) allows quicker turning for the woods rider. Shorter forks mean the seat height is also lower, and the machine is easier to wrestle around in slower sections. Husqvarna built forks and Ohlin shocks with enduro damping give a plush, precise feel. A heavy flywheel and wide ratio transmission let it act like a tractor when needed. Standard items like a VDO speedometer, side stand, enduro lighting, rim saver tires and spark arrester make the WRs almost perfect.
[no value]
Husqvarnas have always been designed for the purist; the guy who likes to buy a race ready or enduro ready or play ready bike. Every year Husqvarna tailors or refines models to fulfill the demands of the motocrosser, enduro rider, and desert rider.

Shortly after the initial report on our CW longterm Suzuki GS550, a GS550 owner called to swap impressions and tuning tips. Some of his experience paralleled ours (front forks are too soft for spirited riding) and some didn’t (he’d removed the airbox top; on ours it made the mixture too lean at full power) and we enjoyed the conversation.

In one sense, 1978 ended the Trans-AMA Series, a confrontation which began back in 1970, when motocross was still at its infancy. That was before anyone even dreamed of putting motocross into stadiums, away from the original naturalterrain courses of Europe.

We meet them every time we set up a photo shoot on a winding road. They see the camera, the photographer, the bike, the rider. They're street racers, canyon flyers, kids and not-so-kids with street bikes set up as ersatz road racers, with rearsets and clubman bars and half fairings and everything in between.

Kawasaki is on the move in the American racing scene. First the Green Meanies stole Brad Lackey away from Honda. Now they’ve signed up privateer Mike Baldwin, who emerged as one of the year’s top road racers while campaigning his self owned, self-tuned TZ750.

I own a 1977 Suzuki GS550, which seems to run fine, but lacks the top end I think it should have. In sixth gear it won’t rev past 8000 rpm, nowhere close to the 9500 rpm redline. I’ve reduced the airbox restriction by removing the airbox cover, and enrichened the mixture by going three sizes larger on the main jet.

CBX BIG BORE KIT
People who must have more power from their Honda CBX Six can now buy an 1130cc big bore kit from Ontario Moto Tech Corp., formerly Yoshima Racing Service. In conjunction with an Ontario Moto Tech 6-into-2-into-1 exhaust system, the big-bore kit shown will produce 145 tractable horsepower across a wide powerband in street trim. The kit includes 67mm 10.5:1 pistons, wrist pins, wrist pin clips, rings, head gasket, camshafts and Ontario super strength hardened and shot-peened chrome-moly connecting rods. The Ontario exhaust system for the CBX (not shown) is available with street (allowing use of centerstand) and racing (for unlimited ground clearance) tail sections. Optional racing parts available from Ontario include a ported and polished cylinder head with 1mm oversize valves. Full race versions of the Ontario CBX engine produce more than 160 horsepower. Information is available from Ontario Moto Tech Corp., CW-2, 6850 Vineland Ave., Unit 18, N. Hollywood, Calif. 91605 (213) 766-7101.

ATP TURBO EXHAUST
American Turbo-Pak has introduced this new exhaust system for turbocharged motorcycles. According to the company, the new Spyder exhaust system is good for two-tenths of a second in the quarter mile and better low end and mid-range torque when compared to other turbocharged motorcycle exhaust systems. The new system is compatible with all older ATP kits and has leak-proof flange mounts. For more information, write or call American Turbo-Pak, CW-2, 251 E. Stevens, Santa Ana, Calif. 92707, (714) 557-7000.

TWO-TONE SEATS
Mr. Seats, Inc. builds two-tone seat covers for motorcycles. The idea is that you buy the seat cover and install it over the stock seat padding, using the stock cover fasteners and hooks. For example, the Mr. Seats cover for the Honda CBX is silver and black, producing a stunning effect. According to the company, the Stocker GT seat kit comes with seat cover, adhesive and instruction for assembly. More information is available from local dealers and Mr. Seats Inc., CW-2, 7312 Laurel Canyon Blvd., N. Hollywood, Calif. 91606, (213) 982-2340.

WISCO ROUGHRIDER BATTERIES
ESB Wisco, Inc., a division of ESB Ray-O-Vac, produces American-made motorcycle batteries said to withstand vibration far better than leading competitive batteries. According to the company, the new Wisco Roughrider battery out-tested other top batteries in a U.S. Ordnance Vibration Test (whatever that is) by a two-to-one margin. The Wisco Roughrider has a unique internal construction with shock-resistant ABS plastic cover and flex-resistant container. Ribbed separators provide better internal acid circulation and super-fine active plate material aides powerful starts. Wisco Roughrider batteries are available at local Wisco dealers.
