Allan Girdler
Back when I was racing, the high point of my motojournalism year was an end-of-season report, in which I detailed events entered, money spent, results, etc. Due to the sad fact that despite seven years’ effort, steel nerves and lightning reflexes I never actually managed to win a race, this report usually contained within its title the phrase How I Suffered My Annual Heartbreak.

A new chapter in the story of the Phantom Duck of the Desert is being written. First, a little background. One of the major off-road races in the Southwest used to be the Barstow to Vegas. Couple of years ago the Bureau of Land Management told the organizers their permit to hold the event had been denied.

One year and 12,000 miles after delivery, our long-term test Kawasaki KZ 1000 is in excellent condition. It has been well used, but it has held up well to the use received. Shortly after the Kawasaki arrived it was connected to a Cycle Kamp trailer and used as a beast of burden, carrying the trailer for a test.

SAMSONITE MOTORCYCLE LUGGAGE

Samsonite saddlebags can be installed in less than two hours with the proper tools. Relocating the turn signals required the most time because the signals wouldn’t come off the original stalks easily. The top rack and sidebars required only a little pushing and shoving (pretty good for an aftermarket product) for mounting.

Despite its slightly musty aura of the backdrop in "Die Walkure" BMW is not one of those firms that traces back its name to the dawn of automotive time but instead came into being as an amalgamation between the Bayerische Flugzeug Werke (headed by Gustav Otto, son of the “Otto-cycle” engine’s inventor) and the neighbouring Bayerische Motoren Werke (formerly Rapp M.W.), this event being in 1917 sometime.

Just before Honda's rep turned on the movie projector and revealed the factory's new models, he said the sort of thing the reps are paid to say: “1979 will be the Year of Honda.” This is the second year for which Honda has introduced a range of in-fact-new models, for street and dirt, designed along similar engineering themes and styled in a family way.

Sport. Remember that word. While Honda innovates for the. technically-minded, and provides fat tires for those in style, the sporting rider who perhaps would welcome a spot of amateur competition, is very much on Honda’s mind. And so is the rider who measures his enjoyment in miles per day rather than per hour.

Motorcycle tires aren't all the same. Easy to say, difficult to prove. But it can be proved. CYCLE WORLD published the first comparison of 15 motorcycle tires in August, 1978. The job isn't finished. The first tire test evaluated tires for cornering on both a wet and dry skid pad and dry pavement braking.

I own a 1978 Yamaha XS750E beauty that gives me more pleasure than watching those three angels on the tube. But I have a problem that I'm sure all other XS750E owners are also bothered by, the airbox leaks crankcase oil. I believe this is due to one of those new (and crazy) EPA emission regulations.

BOOTS
Kawasaki's motocross boots have been evamped. The soles now are beveled and the pivot points that link the upper and lower portions of the boot have been relocated. These modifications increase comfort and decrease break in time. The boots retain many original features such as high density foam lining, vulcanized ankle protector, quick release buckles and rubber composite sole. See your nearest Kawasaki dealer for a closer look.
