At about 9 am. on as fine a Sunday as ever saw the sun come up. my son Joe and I strapped our bikes into daughter Kate's pickup and headed east, into the mountains. On the other side of the pass we turned south, down the inside of the coastal range till we came to the Valley Progress Forgot.

Just a note of thanks from a subscriber on the Triumph coverage in your April 1978 issue. Knowing that Triumph makes only a few bikes and no longer races only makes me appreciate it more. I’ve ridden most all the popular make bikes, but I’ve never owned anything but Triumphs.

Lane Campbell
Motorcycles emission controls have been since subject January to 1 this year. You may not know it yet. You probably have not yet seen a motorcycle built after January 1. Most of those 1978 models (as the vehicle ID plate on the steering head is boldly marked) were actually made in ’77.

From all indications, it was to be a two-way dice for 1st: Kenny Roberts vs Steve Baker. The Loudon pits were buzzing at the fantastic times turned by the pair on their factory TZ250s. But the real talk began after the first lap. Second was not KR, but a rider few had heard of, number 192, Dave Emde.

Not long ago, straddling a 750cc powerplant made you King of the Street and Baron of the By ways. Whether it was the then-new Honda Four, the BSA and Triumph Triples or the big Norton Twins, you owned one of the hairiest snorters of the day. But when the Z-l exploded onto the scene, all of this changed, ushering in the current barrage of sub-12-sec.

Some times I wonder what Vucci is talking about when he natters on and ON about the latest big road bike as to me, road bikes are something to go on the road with and not necessarily for doing wheelies or dodging Cadillacs.

Laverda. To U.S. bikers conditioned by years of big displacement road rocket Triples, the name suggests hump-backed, long-legged brutes bristling with horsepower and purpose. But for Europeans, Moto Laverda has also become a source of lithe, athletic half-liter Twins so nimble they've become the basis of a single-make road racing formula in Spain and Italy.

Thanks to the able men who design exhaust systems at the motorcycle factories, the old certainty of always getting more performance from after market parts has in recent years been not at all certain. Or even easy. Regular readers will recall that getting results with a Ka wasaki KZ650 required several weeks, a bit of parts juggling and the help of two exhaust system makers.

Dirt bike suspensions have taken giant leaps up the evolutionary scale the past few years. Forks with almost a foot of travel are standard on the new Honda CR250R. Incredible. But impressive as some of the new forks are, the real progress has been at the rear of the motorcycle, not only in increased wheel travel, but also in the quality of that travel.

Without a frame, a motorcycle is just a collection of parts. There have been motorcycles built sans frames, as such. Most notable were some of the Vincents, in which the steering head bolted to the oil tank, which bolted to the engine, which bolted to the rear suspen sion, whose springs reacted back into the oil tank.

This is in regard to the article in your March, 1978 issue on the DG expansion chambers and heads for Yamahas RD350s. You stated that the RD in the test had # 105 main jets prior to the installation of the speed equipment. In order to run 105s you must be using the stock air filter which contains an air restricting baffle designed to limit air intake noise.

EXTRA STRENGTH RIDING GEAR
Denim or corduroy sportswear backed with a fabric the makers say is superior to leather is now being offered as motorcycle gear. There are several styles ofjackets, shirts and trousers, for men or women, with a choice of blue denim or brown corduroy. The backing is the news. It contains a blend of nylon and "Kevlar" 29 aramid fibers. Spokesmen for Dupont, which de veloped the fabric, say lab tests matching the fabric against leather showed the Key lar to be twice as resistant to abrasion, five times as resistant to tearing and almost four times stronger in breakage tests. Sounds great. The clothes are being marketed by Schorr Strong Industries. Schorr Strong expects to interest motor cycle stores in selling the clothes, which are supposed to be in production and offered for sale by the time this is published. Just in case, a letter to Schorr Strong Industries, CW-7, 784 Merrick Rd., Baldwin, L.I., N.Y. 11510, will get you a catalog.
