Trained observers that they were, the Sheriff's Mounted Posse had my number in the flick of an eye. Son Joe and I were on our way home and stopped at the drugstore. Parked in front of the donut shop were two Honda XL350s. stock except that they were wearing colors, as the outlaws say.

I received my February issue and I enjoyed your section on “Letters,” especially “Never Too Late.” I am 53 years old. I didn’t fully realize it but I guess I’ve wanted a motorcycle as far back as I can remember. I didn’t feel I could handle one and felt they were too dangerous.

Maybe it was all the rain after two years of drought. Or maybe he just got tired of life in the fast lane, southern California style. Whatever, our friend Bob Runyard, who handles technical publications for Yamaha Motors USA, got restless recently and decided he needed a good, long ride. Tierra del Fuego seemed about the right distance to Bob, and he set about prepping his trusty Yamaha XS650 for the venture. Part of this preparation included installation of a Hugon transparent fairing, which we asked Bob to try in exchange for his evaluation and periodic progress reports. The first of these follows.

Yamaha first introduced the YZ monoshock in 1973. It attracted attention. It was a radically different approach to long travel rear suspension. Many people claimed it was the ultimate suspension. An equal number of people didn't like the principle and voiced objections like: It makes the center of gravity too high, the rear wheel kicks, it’s not adjustable enough, you have no choice of shock brands, etc.

Motocross racing is the game and Replica is 1978’s name. For the 10 years or so that motocross has been a major sport in the U.S. and a major market for the big factories, most of the time there has been one make ruling the roost and everybody else scratching along behind.

Some watch for crocuses poking through the snow, some wait for the sap to start running, some keep an eye open for the arrival of the first robin. But none of these traditional harbingers of spring mean a thing to the good people of Daytona Beach, Florida.

Rural New England has lots of back roads that just end. The towns keep them in repair only as far as the last house. Beyond that what’s left of the old road usually disappears into the woods, to later reappear on the far end at another house at that end of the road.

Factory participation was light, but that didn’t keep the annual Florida Winter-AMA motocross series from being the usual wild four-race shootout, with hordes of riders ready for action after their brief post-’77 layoff'. When the dust (and mud) had cleared after the final round in St.

CARBURETOR
This new carburetor is claimed to maintain a higher velocity, even at minimum throttle openings, than any other carburetor. Controlled high-velocity air flow is accomplished by the design of the guillotine-type slide, patented flat metering rod and trench-type venturi. The float bowl uses the E.I. fuel pickup umbrella, which supplies fuel without being affected by jumps, whoop-de-doos or engine vibration, thus providing a constant flow' of fuel. Tuning is accomplished by varying the needle and its position, for which a special tool is provided. This carburetor is claimed to eliminate the need for main jets, low speed jets and idle jets, and rarely needs cleaning or rebuilding. The E.I. carburetor is available in sizes to fit most motorcycles. All parts are interchangeable between the different size carburetors. For example, the change from a 30mm to 34mm carburetor can be made by buying a different carburetor body. E.I. carburetors are available from your local dealer.
