Then days is long enough, says my note to myself. On reflection that's less than accurate. What really began this account of frustration and triumph occurred, oh. call it a month before the happy ending. What happened was, I had this lovely new.

In “Roundup” of your November 1977 issue the article concerning the use of offroad bikes by the police at the USGP at Carlsbad, California, stated that you hope “that’s as far as it goes.” I hate to be the one to pop your bubble, but there are at least two police agencies in San Diego County, California that have regular off-road motorcycle squads.

What’s fast anymore? The standards are changing. What’s quick? What’s the difference? One bike does the quarter in 11.78 sec., at 114.21 mph. The next one does it in 11.83 at 112.07. Is this an academic distinction? No. It’s just that the current barrage of road missiles is so loaded with eyeball-wideners that the quarter mile has begun to become too short.

During the course of living with our Kawasaki KZ650 long-term test bike, we've explored almost all the machine’s potential as a first-rate street mount and general barnstorming screamer. We augmented the already nimble handling with a set of S&W rear shocks and rising-rate springs, and the addition of a 4into-1 J&R exhaust system (see our January review of same) honed this already potent hauler into a 12-sec.

One of the things the car folks have had going for them since the invention of the model year has been a system known as Options, a simple way for the buyer to build his own machine on the order form. The idea has worked well and made friends and also money, but until recently we motorcycle people have not had it that easy.

hen you have a product line-up 'as comprehensive as that of the Honda Motor Company. two introductions per year would make sense whether you had any secret stuff or not. But of course, Honda always has some secret stuff brewing. We’d heard plenty of tantalizing rumors—Vee-Twins, Vee-Fours, Vee-Sixes, 1400cc shafties, a violently potent new motocrosser—by the time we put our November issue to bed.

You’ve heard the wisdom about how to finish first, first you must finish? How come nobody ever talks about how to finish? That’s the hard part. My Yamaha TT500 has a Profab frame and swing arm, the engine is bored to 540cc, has a Webcam #88 camshaft, head work, Dellorto carb, 38mm leading-axle Betor forks, Works Performance gas-charged shocks, and two super bright halogen headlights rigged by our own electronics wiz.

Jean Crabb
In our December 1977 issue we put out a call for information about make and model clubs. The response was great. Many thanks. As with most things, some of us are joiners and some of us are not. If you're looking for a motorcycle club to share your enthusiasm for your favorite bike, and you enjoy club activities, rallies, touring, picnics and such, the following should be of interest to you.

The Camel Pro Series racing menu may not be any better than in 1977—the scrapping of Yamaha’s dirt effort and Kenny Roberts’ pilgrimage to the European pavement wars aren’t likely to improve the quality of the competition—but it’ll certainly be bigger.

Len Vucci . . . BY THE HORNS The letter entitled “Horns of a Dilemma" in your November issue prompted me to write an alternative method. When I installed a pair of Fiamm horns on my Suzuki GS400, I used a different approach which is much simpler and cheaper.

TOP BEARING KITS
$39.95
Trickit top bearing kits are available for street/touring/cafe motorcycles and some off-road bikes. These kits are said to provide additional engagement and better fit between stanchion tube and slider. The top bearings allow the motorcycle to glide over small bumps and tar strips because the forks are free to respond due to a reduction in stiction. Two kits are presently available. Trickit TB3548 fits all motorcycles using 35 x 48mm fork seals, such as Honda CB450, CB550, CB750 and Suzuki GT550 and GT750. Trickit TB3648 fits motorcycles using 36 x 48mm fork seals, such as Kawasaki Z1, KZ750, KZ900, KZ1000, H1, H2 and Yamaha TX650, XS650, XS750. Price for the Trickit top bearing kits is $39.95 and includes a pair of top bearings. Further information may be obtained by contacting Number 1 Products. Inc. CW-3. 4931 N. Encinita Ave., Temple City. Calif. 91780. Telephone (213) 287-9738.
