On this particular Sunday afternoon had done the chores and the shopping and there was nothing in the garage to be tinkered with, so my wife and I were at ease in the garden, curled up with two good books. Suddenly there came a loud "SPLOOSH," the sound I imagine a 1000gal.

Hard news from the American Motorcycle/Motorcyclist Association, the name of which is presented in this fashion as just one sign of serious problems. From its creation until recently, the AMA’s middle name was Motorcycle. Then the men in charge decided an image change was needed and changed the middle name to Motorcyclist.

It's 10 p.m. We've been in Japan for a little over two hours, and we've waited long enough. Besides, the Bullet Train seems like an ideal place to start talking about new Superbikes. Thus, as the miles click smoothly past—at 120 per, this slick electric streamliner makes short work of the 200-mile Tokyo-to-Hamamatsu run— Tadaomi Shigenoya, of the Suzuki Motor Company's Overseas Operations Division, finds himself the objective of a friendly but persistent inquisition.

Despite the undisputed newness of this idea, the evaluation that follows comes only after internal debate and struggle. What we have here is the invention of what we must call the Threeeighths Fairing, that is, a compromise between the racing-style quarter fairing as used on road and cafe racers and the full touring jobs which are sometimes billed as half fairings.

In any form of motorcycle racing you can find lots of guys who have the guts and built-in gyroscope to win. And lots of other guys who have the savvy. But it’s not often that you find the rider who combines those qualities in near-perfect balance.

Trust Honda. There was a time when Elsinore meant winner. Then there was a time when Elsinore meant winner only because there was so much competition equipment on the market that a fullrace Honda motocrosser could keep up with stock bikes from the other factories.

Honda's approach to the sport (or business) of racing has never been like that of the other factories. After years of building upon the basic transportation market Honda went racing in the major leagues. And got drubbed. Honda came back and won everything in sight, setting records that stunned the world then and in some cases still stand today.

Husqvarna is here to stay. That's news? Hasn't the Swedish company with all the world titles been in the U.S. for years, racing and winning and selling? Yes, and so have many European motorcycle makers. Some of them have gone away and for 1978, others are in a state of confusion, with cutbacks in models and staff.

The test ride began with a two-man riders' meeting. For Jay and me. He spoke, I listened. I didn’t take it personally, because even the reigning national champ lives within his budget. That means living in a van with three race bikes as roommates and that means Jay has something of a personal fondness for his mounts.

One of the first (and most expensive) lessons in maintenance learned by off-road riders involves the law forbidding two objects from being in the same space at the same time: Ride swiftly over a rough and irregular surface and the irresistible force (wheel and tire) is bound to meet the immovable object (large rock).

We recently had the opportunity to ride Al Baker's Honda 440 through the desert and one of the first things we noticed was the throttle. Really! The unit worked smoothly and much less force was needed to pull the carburetor slide open. Being easier to operate was only part of the difference.

The prospective buyer of motorcycle boots faces many of the same problems as if he were choosing new tires for his car or van. With few exceptions, the various products seem to differ mainly in appearance—to the layman, anyway. As with tires, the uninformed buyer doesn't realize the merits of his selection until after the product has been purchased and used for some time.

OK you lovers of stadium racing, here's a Modest Proposal to spice up the 1978 Supercross series: Instead of one rank of riders waiting to charge the starting gate, let's have two—one for the mortals and a second one for Bob Hannah. Judging by last year’s season windup at Anaheim, as well as the rest of the 1977 Coca Cola Supercross campaign, it’s going to take something along these lines to halt the Hurricane.

A while back we visited the folks at Martek Products, Inc., located a stone’s throw from our editorial offices. We were looking for a CDI unit for our Baja 1000 race bike when we spotted a curious-looking device mounted on a Honda 750 where the breaker points should have been.

ROWE CHAIN TENSIONERS
$3.50
Rowe chain tensioners feature a roller with free bearings which loosely fit into the races, allowing room for dirt etc., without jamming. A plastic compound is injection molded around the specially designed ball bearing. Lubricated bearings attract dirt and such, so Rowe designed his bearings to operate without lubrication. An increased life is claimed. These rollers are currently being used on factory Honda motocrossers. The universal model shown fits most Japanese models. Repair kits are available for most brands and models. Rowe chain tensioners are priced from $17.50, repair kits from $3.50. For further information contact Rowe USA Corporation, CW-2, P.O. Box 14, Bellflower, Calif. 90706. Telephone (213) 860-0591.
