No system is perfect. Couple months ago some savvy chaps announced a keen event, an invitational motorcycle contest to which all the top stars of road, flat-track, desert and motocross competition would be matched against each other in a mix of events, on any one motorcycle the rider felt would be the best machine for the events.

Allan Girdler’s article, “We Saw Nothing, I Tell You . . . Nothing” in your January issue is marvelous. After reading his account of the tour in Japan, I have an understanding of some of the problems with which the motorcycle industry is faced.

I purchased a Yamaha RD400C and I admit it took a while to get used to it after riding four-strokes for 22 years. Nevertheless, the RD400C is quite a machine with only a few disadvantages. I like the overall performance but riding in town just doesn’t work out on this machine.

Rolling through the nicely banked turn north of Scotchman's Cove onto the flat empty road just waiting to vanish beneath the whiskey tenor of the Triple's exhaust note, cold blue ocean on the left and warm green hills on the right, the Yamaha XS750 works just fine and everything else doesn't mean a damned thing.

Shock absorber theory and practice has developed by leaps and bounds. Pun deliberate. Motocross racers one day discovered that increased wheel travel meant more speed with control, that is, winning. As the long-travel-rear (usually abbreviated LTR) suspension became routine practice, more and more off-road bikes appeared with shocks and springs set forward, cantilevered (lay-down), or both.

Looking back at who finished in the top 10 last season, we see that with a few exceptions, most should make the list again. Gene Romero, who has probably made the best 10 list more times than anyone, squeaked into 10th slot last season. This year he plans a more limited racing schedule and hence, we’ll probably see his departure from the group.

Dusty and mud-caked you roll in, drop down a gear or two and follow some riders through the gathering jam of vans and campers returning to headquarters along with the bikes. Behind you are more than 200 miles of tortuous trails and backwoods roads— more than nine hours of battling sandy hills, mud holes, fallen timber and an occasional water crossing.

When you stop and think about it, most of us ride motorcycles for fun or pleasure and many of us are simply not too serious about riding. The machine doesn't have to be the prettiest or the fastest or the most expensive or have three miles of suspension travel front and rear.

The end is in sight. Our series on carburetion is drawing to a close. For interested readers, large expenditures for routine tune-up services should be a thing of the past. So far in this series of articles, carburetor theory has been presented, as has rebuilding and tuning basics for slide-type carburetors.

While reading the “Pro Techniques for Riding” article on maintenance in your December issue, a question came to mind. When you take out the tire locks and put in the screws, won’t the tips puncture the tires? If not, please let me know how to go about setting the screws in right.

It might be dangerous to quit!
Every run has a few guys everyone calls “Pop” and they usually hang in there pretty well.
I have known for some time that we cannot always live in climax situations. Trite as it may sound, they have to be earned.

It was 22 years ago. It was before the 5.40x18 knobby, before "Loc-Tite," duct tape and Silicone Seal, yeah, if you can believe it, it was even before the ring-ding revolution. It was a week before the Jack Pine Enduro and I was showing signs of prerace nerves, particularly at night when instead of sleeping I’d lie awake wondering how hard I could push myself for 500 miles.

Even the unusual has its own rationale. Two issues ago, we were told by Honda R&D that Honda expects to increase sales by appealing to people who don’t yet know they’d enjoy motorcycles. The appeal is supposed to come from machines like the Honda Express, a tidy little package which is more than a moped while not quite a motorcycle.

Monterey, California's Laguna Seca National Road Race attracts thousands of people every year to watch one of the best events on the calendar. But this July the race is absent from the national schedule. Instead, the event has been given a For mula 750 World Championship sanction and will be held on September 11 rather than the usual late-July date.

Accel has a spark plug gapping tool they claim makes it easy to gap spark plugs with accuracy. Simply thread a spark plug into the tool, insert the desired blade between the electrodes, and tighten the adjuster knob. A set screw holds the ground electrode in place, maintaining proper electrode alignment.
