When CYCLE WORLD organized a motorcycle safari to Mike’s Sky Ranch in mid-Baja to introduce or intensify the motorcycling experience to a key industry group, we needed sweep vehicles. They had to be heavy duty and preferably four-wheel drive.

Thank you for the article on Jofa rock and shoulder guards in your November ’76 issue. It was well written and supplied your readers with some very critical data concerning protection in the motocross field. There was one problem which is of great concern to this division of Volvo of America Corporation and its distributors.

Do it yourself. In areas such as carburetion and ignition, a home tune-up is one alternative to combat the rising cost of motorcycle maintenance. So far in our series of articles on this concept, ignition theory and maintenance and carburetion theory have been covered.

WHEN CAN-AM FIRST appeared, the Canadian firm had one motorcycle, a street-legal bike easily modified for motocross or enduros. Then came the actual motocross racing model, giving that market a good chance at the winner’s stand, and leaving the serious enduro riders in the middle; either strip a T’NT or add muffler and lights to an MX-3.

THROUGHOUT THE HISTORY of motorcycles, people who like racing have also liked to avail themselves of the advances, real or imagined, which come from tests of competition. Win on Sunday, Sell on Monday works, especially when the seller can offer a direct link from winning racer to production machine.

THE INTRODUCTION OF the Kawasaki KZ650 tells most of the story. The motorcycle press was invited to the Bonneville Salt Flats for a day at full speed. Clocks don’t lie, so it follows that Kawasaki had nothing to hide. When the eager reporters arrived, they saw a row of bikes parked on the salt.

I read your article about ignition tuning in the October ’76 issue with much interest because I have recently been trying to figure out why my Suzuki GT380 runs fairly well at speeds up to 50 mph and terribly above that. After checking both static and dynamic timing with no improvement, I was tempted to investigate carburetion.

WE MIGHT AS well face up to it (just among ourselves, of course. No sense making trouble at the dinner table): While we sometimes pretend that long trips on a bike will get the urge out of our systems, the truth is just the opposite. Taking a short trip means planning a second longer ride, which frees your imagination for planning a third tour, a real long one this time.

UPSWEPT EXHAUST SYSTEM
$50
New from Bassani Manufacturing is an upswept exhaust system for the Yamaha TT and XT500 Single. Bassani claims this pipe is designed to increase performance by 12 to 15 percent, and greatly improve power in low end and mid-range for woods and trail riding. The tucked-in upswept design exhaust is said to save about 10 pounds over the stock system, and is less subject to damage than the factory low pipe. A special bend in the pipe lets it clear the large rear tires used on the TT/XT500. Two-piece construction makes installation easy. The front fender must be trimmed slightly to clear the head-pipe and on the XT500 a relocation of the battery is required. For optimum performance, some rejetting may be necessary. The pipe is finished in heat resistant flat black paint and retails for $50. If you’re interested in knowing more, contact Bassani Manufacturing, CW-2, 3726 E. Miraloma, Dept. B30, Anaheim, CA 92806. Telephone: (714) 630-1821.

Meyer Plastics, Inc.
CHAIN TENSIONER
$54
PRO-AM is proud of its new low maintenance chain tensioner available for Yamaha models YZ250C, YZ100A and YZ125C and Suzuki models RM125A, RM250 and RM370. Production versions of the tensioner have been tested under racing conditions and it is claimed that the tensioner and its component parts should last longer with no more than minor maintenance than comparable units now on the market. Chain tensioner arms and mounts are machined from aluminum alloy and lightening holes reduce unsprung weight without sacrificing strength. Sealed needle bearings are used throughout to keep maintenance at a minimum, and longer-lasting urethane roller shafts are ground and case-hardened for a close tolerance fit and low wear. The tensioner retails for $54 and can be ordered from PRO-AM, Inc., P.O. Box 2737, Palos Verdes, CA 90274. Or call (213) 378-8933.
