For as long as there have been different forms of motorcycle competition, the racers and fans of each type have argued and debated over which requires more skill, which is the best test of natural talent and which make or model is the best all round machine.

Congrats on your “Ten Best Bikes” feature in your October issue. Very well done, both editorially and graphically. Whoever whipped up the copy on the BMW R75/6 either had mist on his goggles, or switched too fast from one bike to the other, when he wrote: “Around town, there is very little drive chain snatch.” Very little, indeed, what with the bike’s driveshaft (which IS mentioned later on).

I purchased my Can Am 250 T’NT on April 20. 1976. In June it was necessary to return it to the dealer because the fork seals were leaking and the fork tubes were severely scored. The problem was caused by metal filings and shavings not being removed from the fork tubes after machining or prior to fork assembly.

Brilliant ideas are common as dirt. History is packed with tales of dazzling innovations which fell to earth unheeded. Every human being has about one creative breakthrough annually. Mankind is lumpy with talent. We fail because we fail to follow through.

Theories about carburetion and sketches explaining the more popular types of carbs used on motorcycles are all very well, but it gets personal when your motorcycle isn't running as well as it should and you wonder 1) What the **** is wrong and 2) How do I fix it?

OHardly! O Ableson! What memories are brought forth by that name! My earliest motorcycling days were spent astride a flathead of uncertain vintage which, as I recall, neither asked for nor received any maintenance whatsoever. Much much earlier in sepia tones the image floats back of Bob Robinson (a beau of my sister’s) standing insouciantly beside his big Twin, white shirtsleeves rolled up and elbows akimbo, smiling out at all his admirers.

Back when the English were developing rude public road behavior into a form of fine art. they used vehicles known as Q-ships. The Q-ship is a concealed weapon. The drill was this: The practitioner of this art cruises along at no great speed and with no sign that his mount is anything other than a dull production sort of machine.

Story And Photos You’re kidding. Guys ride two hundred miles every day for six days? Every night their bikes are locked up so they can't work on them? They can work only with tools they can carry on the bike? Broken parts (except for tires and tubes) can't be replaced unless they were carried on the bike?

The number of repairs that can be made on a broken motorcyle with the barest minimum of tools is truly amazing. Almost anything that fails on a bike can be repaired if you are ingenious enough. A breakdown can sometimes be fixed so easily and quickly you will be able to keep riding.

There is talk, and only talk at the present, that one day soon the American Motorcyclist Association will divide up Grand National racing into two separate divisions, road racing and dirt track. Hence the AMA would crown two separate champions; we would have a number one in both road racing and dirt track.
