ONE YEAR AGO the International Six Days Trial was held in the United States. Massachusetts to be exact. It was our first try at hosting the event, and because of that we had some problems with scoring. We solved those problems quickly enough, but it left some Europeans leery.

I seldom write to magazines, but here goes. I subscribe to CYCLE WORLD and to Cycle. However, I have been very disappointed in both mags, as it seems that all the articles are on dirt or small bikes. Once in awhile there is an article on a (big) 400 or 500cc.

Readers, as well as those involved in the motorcycle industry, are invited to have their say about motorcycles they own or have owned. Anything is fair game: performance, handling, reliability, service, parts availability, lovability, you name it.

HONDA’S long-awaited 1000 is here!Powered by a Horizontally-opposed four-cylinder, water-cooled power plant, the new GL series looks to be one of the ultimates in long-distance touring machines. It features shaft drive, front double-disc brakes, a single rear disc brake, and a counterbalance mechanism to eliminate twisting torque reaction from the longitudinal-running crank assembly.

ABOUT 1000 CROOKED concrete steps are wedged tightly into the face of the Hill and they lead to a cinder-block shack at the top, an aerie built around a 1926 Chevrolet, or what's left of one. But it's really only the aboriginal four-cylinder motor and driveshaft, and a little bit of the chassis.

ASK AROUND to find out what experts think it takes to make a great big-bore motocrosser and you will probably come up with a couple of different answers. Invariably everyone will mention handling. That needs no in-depth explanation. Good handling is essential to every motorcycle, no matter what the intended purpose.

IT MAY BE months, or as long as years before the speculation about what really happened at the Snake River Canyon simmers down. Evel Knievel failed in his attempt to jump the canyon in his X-2 steam-powered Skycycle. The craft's small drogue chute deployed on the takeoff ramp and pulled the main chute out, ending Knievel's flight long before he ever reached the other side of the canyon.

AT TIMES, WORKING in this industry can be frustrating, particularly when covering racing events. Racing events that one way or another get all screwed up, fall behind schedule, don't follow a pre-established agenda and generally have everyone, racers included, wondering, "What the hell is going on?" As journalists, we've covered an interminable number of competition events.

The controversial, but undisputed winner, a Honda XL175 four-stroke Single, impressed us to such a degree that we decided to keep the machine and add it to the growing list of staff-owned motorcycles.

With his mouth flapping like a castanet, voice tearing at the air in the fashion of bullets at an execution, his body leaping towards the sky to form a human exclamation point, the man looks to be at the point of convulsing. Gripping a microphone in seemingly white-knuckled desperation, his eyes wide in a frenzied glaze, he is hard at work moving, controlling, molding his crowd to a climax-like state.

IN THE LAST issue of CW we carried the first installment of our 350 Honda project. We dealt mainly with the basics needed to assemble a standard Honda XL350 in a C&J custom frame. At that time we made the would-be do-it-yourselfer aware that, regardless of what the sales propaganda indicated, he would be on his own a good part of the time.

If there was any doubt left in anyone’s mind that Yamaha’s TY250 Trialer could be competitive at high altitudes, Bobby Hopkins laid that doubt to rest at the 1974 Ute Cup. Hopkins, an extraordinarily gifted young rider from Michigan, put on a stunning first lap exhibition, completing 20 sections in a 20-mile loop with only one point lost!
