The enormous success of the U.S. Grand Prix in Carlsbad, where more than 34,000 paid to attend, followed by Mike Goodwin’s sensational Superbowl of Motocross at the Los Angeles Coliseum where over 38,000 watched Marty Trippes do his once a year thing, made it obvious that motocross has at last arrived as a spectator sport.

MANY multi-cylinder motorcycles with separate carburetors require special equipment to accurately synchronize the carburetors. This requires that the owner invest in special equipment, or have his carburetors adjusted at a repair shop, either of which can run into a sizable amount of money.

I am considering putting an oil cooler on my 650 Yamaha and would appreciate answers to the following questions. First, are they a worthwhile item on a road machine and by how much do they drop oil temperatures on a warm summer day? Second, how much cooling can be expected with the dipstick-type cooler presently on the market?

My first motorcycle, a Harley-Davidson Sprint 350 (street) purchased new in May of 1971 was a completely unenjoyable street mount. After 1500 miles five to ten healthy jumps on the kickstarter lever were required hot or cold. The “startability” deteriorated to a point where, after 3000 miles, bump starting was employed whenever possible.

Mention the name Rokon to a random group of people and you’re likely to find someone who has heard of Rokon’s first attempt at building a motorcycle: the Trail Breaker. This first attempt was unusual—unusual to the point of being ungainly. After all, it had huge low pressure (5 psi) tires, about two feet of ground clearance, and a complicated drive system using an automatic clutch, chains, bevel gears, and U-joints to drive both wheels.

IT’S NOT at all surprising to see new models of trials iron suddenly springing into the picture these days. The sport of observed trials is now firmly engraved on motorcycling’s map...and it appears as though a solid future is ahead. The English got the sport going, the Spaniards gave it new life with specialized, proper machinery, and now the Japanese are about to make trialer availability and price attractive to the general motorcycle populace.

NO SPORT in the history of the U.S. has exploded into big time the way motocross has. This year the AMA will sanction almost 2000 motocross events from the Atlantic to the Pacific, with more than a hundred riders per event. That adds up to a lot of participants, but more important is the size of the viewing audience.

PROBABLY A LOT of people have pondered the question, “How would you go about building the very best dirt bike ever made?” Few people have done more than ponder, however. It takes a very major commitment to start with a clean sheet of paper and produce saleable new machines.

Yamaha will soon introduce a new trials model, designated Yamaha Trial TY250, for sale in Japan and abroad. The model has been designed and engineered based on suggestions and advice given by reigning European champion Mick Andrews. Andrews is riding the works Yamaha in each round of the ’73 European Championship Trials Series, thereby collecting very valuable and workable data for the development and improvement of the new machine.

B. R. NICHOLLS
When Jim Pomeroy won the first race of the 1973 world 250cc motocross series on the hot, dusty Tarassa circuit near Barcelona in Spain, he set the pattern for the most open and exciting series in a long time. Just as sensational as that win on a Bultaco is the fact that now, after seven of the eleven qualifying meetings the might of the Suzuki factory has been laid low and they do not figure in the top ten.

The Louisville track has a unique surface of crushed limestone; it is a fine powder which tends to collect on anything it can, and eats poorly prepared air cleaners for breakfast. Riders call it a horsepower course. This year Louisville was hot.
