NEARBY IS a photograph of what appears to be the crew of some huge construction company, each member standing happily next to the machine he runs. Not so. Happy, true. But, it’s the full operating crew at Saddleback Park, posing with the fortune of equipment required to keep the park in top condition.

MORE ON NOISE

I read your article on noise with mixed emotions. I do not understand how a generally well-thought out and objective piece could contain a glaringly inaccurate and archaic myth as fact. I refer to the statement, “a street iron with a stock muffler puts out about 90db(A)” and the graph of decibel noise levels indicating the average motorcycle noise level to be in excess of 90db(A).

Having never owned a bike smaller than 350cc, I’m really surprised at my Honda CL 175. I bought the bike new in September of 1972, and I’ve put 4500 miles on it to date. I bought the bike mainly for going back and forth to work and joyriding on the weekends, but it’s proven to be a lot more than an economical ride to work.

CERTAINLY THE most controversial issue ever to come before the executive committee of the American Motorcycle Association is the muffler rule. It all began when the 1972 Competition Congress declared that all machines in professional racing would be muffled to 92db(A) after January 1, 1974.

EVERY MOTORCYCLE must have a flywheel and the size of that component has tremendous impact on the machine's overall riding qualities, yet this seemingly simple circle of steel is surrounded by scores of nonsensical myths. Half of what you hear about flywheels is wrong, and the other half is half wrong.

WHEN IT COMES to touring, lots of bikes will do, but few can match the stamina or comfort of a Wixom Brothers equipped Moto Guzzi 850. The Eldorado, you see, is one of motorcycling's heavies. It's a bike for crossing continents, not states. It's a bike that can carry 200 lb. of gear for camping and a passenger at the same time.

Trouble was, they hadn’t changed much over the last few years, save for a five-speed gearbox, and it was definitely time for an update.

IN THE strictest sense, motorcycle control cables have only one task to perform. They transmit motion which links up a control apparatus with a mechanical device. Sounds like a trouble free system, doesn’t it? Well, with proper lubrication, control cables are just that, but try and get that lubricant down inside between the inner and outer housing!

YAMAHA YZ REPLICA

Yamaha is putting a lot of effort into its competition oriented two-strokes of late. This is especially true on the home front, and in Japan the one that is drawing the most attention is the ultra light TA 125 production racer. Perhaps the reason this class is so popular is that 125s have been one of the most important segments of the home market, ever since the industry was founded some 20 years ago.

The small, central California town of Visalia seems an unlikely spot for what is probably the world's largest show of classic and antique motorcycles. But each year a portion of the Visalia Fair shopping center is roped off and as many as 160 machines are parked and displayed to interested people at no charge.

"Columbus discovered America; Bul taco discovered Americans," is a quote ascribed to Oriol Bulto that could well end up in the prestigious Oxford Dictionary of Quotations. And this is particularly true if another American Bultaco rider hits the headlines as motocross star Jim Pomeroy and to a lesser degree trials man Lane Leavitt have done recently.

IT WAS 1946. England was just recovering from the war. When you arrived home from the service, your father promised you anything your heart desired, to show his thanks at your coming back in one piece. You chose a Scott Squirrel; a 500cc water-cooled twostroke Twin motorcycle that was steeped in tradition, yet full of some of the most amazing technology Alfred Angus Scott could unleash on the world.
