I just today received my November issue of CYCLE WORLD. Ever since my first subscription issue came, I have been deeply impressed. But never in my life have I had such an issue. Out of the three main best selling bike magazines, you’re No. 1. Kent R. Wilkinson New Providence, N.J. Your article, Fight Those Traffic Tickets, Part I, has prompted me to write on several related points.

I don’t know if my letter will be considered valid, as my father sells Yamahas, but every time I read the May ’72 issue, in Feedback, about the 125 Yamaha MX, I feel hurt, as I have a 1970 Yamaha AT1-MX. I raced the hell out of it most every weekend for the Wisconsin season in 1970 and 1971, and am the number one 125cc class scrambles rider in my district for 1972.

MORE THAN 2000 spectators at a trials! That's quite a turnout for a participation form of sport. The event was the third annual Trials de Espana, held at Jim Robinson's Escape Country in normally sunny California. The day, however, was damp, drizzly and colder than you-know-what.

IT WAS RAINING Sunday morning, and I had known it long before the alarm went off at 5:30. It always rains on the second day of the Berkshire Trial. It wasn’t even light when I awoke to the sound of the downpour. I had to get up early because today, as yesterday, I was to go out into the Berkshires on my bike ahead of the competitors in the Berkshire Trial, checking arrows and replacing those vandalized.

DAMN. ALL I wanted to do was license a dirt bike for the street. And they were against me! They, in this case, meaning the various people in the State of California licensed to certify things like lights and brakes. I’ll admit that my bike (a hand assemblage of parts favoring no particular nationality) doesn’t look like something suitable for cruising the boulevard, but it does meet or exceed all legal requirements for the State of California.

Indian. An old American motorcycle. Some people regard it as dead. Unusable. And therefore junk. Junk, even antique junk, is too remote from “now.” So the “now” people regard old Indians with passive disinterest. Indians, they think, are reserved for the prying, fanatic fingers of an archeologist/repairman.

"SO THEY picked the steepest hill in Springfield (Mass.) and had their test rider take the bike to the top. 'What did you think of it?' they asked the guy when he got back down. 'Man,' he said, 'that thing's got power plus,' " (Antique motorcycle collector and restorer Lysle Parker, explaining the derivation of the model name for the Indian "Powerplus.") “This, then, is the marvel motor that will be continued in the 1917 Big Twin—the same motor, with a few refinements, that so consistently and emphatically demonstrated to the entire universe the introduction of new and far-reaching ideals in motorcycle motor development and standard soundness.

MOTORCYCLE aficionados are inclined to call the great European bikes "classics" and all older American motorcycles "antiques." This really isn’t very logical if one uses the definition that an outstanding design which is years ahead of its time is considered to be classical regardless of its age or country of origin.

There are few things in motorcycle racing as spectacular as the start of the Barstow to Vegas Hare ’n Hound. Riders line up, side-by-side, in a slightly arching line that seems to extend for miles across the desert floor. Behind and at both ends of the line are thousands of people, as well as acres and acres of assorted campers, vans, trucks, cars and play bikes.

I will be receiving my 1972 Norton Commando Interstate next month and I was hoping you could offer a few ideas or suggestions that would help to improve the reliability and the durability of the Norton. I feel the bike has more than enough power for my intended usage and I want to reduce the compression slightly by adding a second base gasket.
