CALIFORNIA STATE legislators got a shock recently. The results of a survey made by the Department of Conservation and the state Lands Commission returned the news that lands used by recreation vehicles had suffered only “negligible damage” even though the lands were being used by motorcycles, four-wheeled recreational vehicles and snowmobiles.

Readers are invited to have their say about motorcycles they own or have owned. Anything is fair game: performance, handling, reliability, service, parts availability, funkiness, lovability. you name it. Suggestions: be objective, be fair, no wildly emotional but illfounded invectives; include useful facts like miles on odometer, time owned, model year, special equipment and accessories bought, etc.

Last year I bought a late 1969 Honda CL450. It has accessory “TT” style header pipes and reverse-cone megaphones with removable perforated steel baffles. A few months ago, the front cam chain sprocket-guide assembly disintegrated, leaving only the two composition rollers and the axle for the main sprocket.

WITH ABOUT six weeks separating Daytona and the $60,000 Shell-sponsored Imola race for F 750 machines, it is not too surprising that the Florida classic should attract some Italian observers. It was, however, a bit eyebrow raising to bump into the really top brass of Italian motorcycling, casually making notes and taking pictures.

IN THE December 1970 issue of CYCLE WORLD we raved on about the new BMW R75/5, the German factory’s answer to the onslaught of Superbikes from Japan, England and America. The staid BMW had taken on the character of a wolf in sheep’s clothing. Now everyone knows that a BMW is a quiet, docile gentleman’s motorcycle: extremely dependable, practically silent in operation, and meticulously well-finished.

IN THE MAY ’72 issue we looked at Yamaha's experience in converting its piston-timed-intake engines to reed induction. Its results showed improved engine performance at all values of engine rpm for both the Enduro and MX engines. This success makes one wonder if this type of performance can be attained using a bolt-on reed kit on some other motorcycle.

THOSE READERS who are familiar with the Bultaco. Matador series motorcycles would probably think I was crazy to mess about with one of the most tractable and reliable engines around. ONE OF THE things that makes owning a recreational vehicle enjoyable is having it ready to roll whenever the mood strikes. YOU MAY BE one of the lucky people who has never stripped the threads in an aluminum casting. But chances are you’ve wished you had one of these repair kits at one time or another. Spark plug holes on dirt machines are especially prone to getting stripped because of one’s rush in changing plugs, or from the introduction of dirt between the threads of the spark plug and the cylinder head.

The United States is the largest market for Japanese motorcycles. Total sales in 1971 registered a massive 62 percent increase over the previous year, and total value also rose by a sharp 73 percent above the previous year.Unchallenged top maker Honda is now carefully studying the plan of commencing motorcycle production in the United States in the foreseeable future at the time when another uprevaluation of the yen seems inevitable.

No fewer than 300 members turned out for the Classic and Antique Motorcycle Association’s annual rally days, April 22 and 23, held at the Visalia (Calif.) Fair Mall’s parking lot, and several brought more than one motorcycle. You really get your money's worth when you watch this act. It's Rex Blackwell and Gary Davis. They do a nicely timed double jump with side-by-side double ramps. This jump, over 15 Honda cars, took place at the AHRA drags at Scottsdale, Ariz. Curiously, the jumping duo shows no brand favoritism, one doing his thing on a Honda SL350, the other making it with a Maico.
