ANOTHER trip to Japan, and each one more spectacular than the last. This issue carries most of my new discoveries under special reports, but I would like to share a few personal views of the whole thing here. Yamaha was the bombshell at the 18th Tokyo Motor Show with their new 750 Four.

Readers are invited to have their say about motorcycles they own or have owned. Anything is fair game: performance, handling, reliability, service, parts availability, funkiness, lovability, you name it. Suggestions: be objective, be fair, no wildly emotional but illfounded invectives; include useful facts like miles on odometer, time owned, model year, special equipment and accessories bought, etc.

I thought a few of your readers might like to know about motorcycle headlamp conversion to automotive sealed beam lamps. There are some excellent reasons for converting. 1. Better availability than the standard part. If you’ve ever needed a new lamp on Sunday night out in the suburbs, you know how much easier it is to get a car headlamp.

Well, the gimmicks are still there, but the basic motorcycle they are bolted to is an improved machine, thanks to detail changes to the basic design.

ABOUT FOUR GOOD hard steps, pop out the clutch with about one-quarter throttle, and there is a deep-throated gurgle as the rear end slides sideways slightly and the 100-horsepower engine comes to life. Back in with the clutch, climb aboard as the revs go up to about five thou, and very gently feed back in the clutch, as the rump involuntarily pushes hard on the large seat back.

FRAME LOWERING KIT
$25-30
DT-1 owners interested in frame modification may purchase Webco's frame lowering kit to assist them in the operation. The kit is designed to drop the DT-1 engine 1 3/4 in. and move it 7/8 in. to the rear, thus lowering the center of gravity and providing better handling. Footpeg/seat relationship also benefits from the change, and the swing ing arm is moved closer to a horizontal position. The kit consists of three segments which are spliced into the frame in a simple installation. Each kit is individually boxed and is supplied with a complete and detailed instruction sheet showing all necessary drawings and cut aways. Total cost for the modification, including job-shop welding, could be accomplished within a $25-30 price range. Webco part number is 2248, price is $14.95, and the product is available through Webco Inc., Dept. CW-2, 218 Main St., Venice, CA 90293.

Designed for sportsmen and professional competitors, Circle Industries' footpegs feature a serrated anti-skid surface to grip the bottom of the rider's boot. Rather than a rubber cover which can break or slide off, composition of the pegs is heavy-gauge, cadmium-plated steel. Two cut-outs in the bottom of the peg keep mud and rocks from clogging the gripping area. Further information is available from your local dealer, or from Circle Industries, Dept. CW-2, 2536 Seaman Ave., South El Monte, CA 91733. An accessories catalog is also available for $1.

THROTTLE/BRAKE AND COMPRESSION BRAKE VALVE
$16.95
Throttle/Brake, a Patraco product designed to allow the rider to actuate his compression release by simply shutting his throttle a bit beyond the idle position, is offered in conjunction with a Compression Brake Valve. The Throttle/Brake is machined from a solid block of lightweight aluminum and carries a lifetime guarantee against breakage. The Compression Brake Valve acts as a conventional compression release but has a dual valve design to neutralize combustion chamber pressures only on the upward strokes. Thus, it is claimed to provide twice the engine braking action of conventional compression releases. Any head that has been drilled to accommodate a conventional compression release will accept a Compression Brake Valve. The cable, which fits the valve in three different positions, may be removed while the valve remains in the head. Price for the Throttle/Brake alone is $24.95; the Compression Brake Valve alone is $16.95. Together, the price is $39.95. Available from Patraco, Dept. CW-2, 1801 Border Ave., Torrance, CA 90501, or J.C. Industries, Dept. CW-2, P.O. Box 1992, Silver Spring, MD 20902.

It was hard to believe, but at the end of the International Test Series in California, the American team had triumphed over the United Kingdom squad. Score: Yanks, 140, U.K., 129. While former World Speedway Champions Ivan Mauger and Barry Briggs put on the expected strong show against the Americans, they were carrying the whole U.K.

Ten miles outside Belfast on a quiet stretch of road stood grand prix house. It was built by voluntary labor with materials bought with a donation from Gallahers, the local cigarette manufacturer. It represented the spirit of the Ulster Grand Prix Supporters Club which raised money each year to ensure the continuance of the races.
