THERE AREN'T MANY firsts left in the motorcycling world that are not overly dangerous or financially impractical, but three Italian enthusiasts, Massimo Bertuzzi, Renalto Calo, and Filippo Falzoni, have come up with one. They are currently touring from the tip of South America to Alaska.

I'm writing about the article "It's a Steal" in the September issue of CYCLE WORLD. For obvious reasons I'm not giving my name or address. I've been a rip-off artist for the past six years. I've more or less bagged it now, but I can remember and still know what to do and how to do it.

I own an early 1970 Honda CB350 with steering damper and rubber pads on the tank. After 5000 miles it developed three annoying habits: 1) It became impossible to set the right breaker point gap to the specified setting in the manual without advancing the ignition timing to the point where the engine wouldn't rev above 6000.

IT is not my intention to become lazy and turn this column into another reader letter service; however, a recent correspondent made some very good points that deserve more than standard treatment. Mr. Mike Stephenson wrote his letter after reading my special report in the September issue regarding a University of California, Los Angeles, motorcycle crash study.

FEW RIDERS I personally know have not thought at one time or another that it is their God-given right to ride a motorcycle. Perhaps this devout belief arises from the individual nature of motorcycling, and the enthusiasm a rider has for his sport.

SUZUKI'S T500 "TITAN," largest of the twin-cylinder two-strokes in general production, aroused the interest of the motorcycling press several years ago. Critics of the design argued that because of cooling problems, it wasn't feasible to put two large cylinders so close together.

ALTHOUGH 71 AMA records were broken during Bonneville Speedweek, poor salt conditions and high winds prevented any attempt at bettering the 265-mph mark set by Harley-Davidson last year. According to SCTA starter Bob Higbee, the first two approach miles and the last three miles of the shut-off area were bumpy.

THE NEXT TIME you get ready to ride your twowheeler, take a moment and look at its tires. If it weren't for those two hoops of rubber, motorcycles might have never evolved. So that you may better appreciate this versatility of the pneumatic tire and its influence on your bike's handling, let's take an in-depth look at this rubberized component to see how it performs, how it's designed and constructed, and how it can be kept functioning more efficiently with just a simple act of maintenance.

MEXAWOP EXPRESS ... is that a train? No, not quite. But it has to be one of the most impeccable V8 trikes in existence. Its owner/builder, Dan Hernandez, of Long Beach, Calif., christened the machine with the unusual name, which is an expression of his Mexican/Italian family background, hence the Mexawop title.

FULL BORE CHAIN
Full Bore Accessories, a division of Yankee Motor Co., has available a Full Bore chain with a patented master link design providing a more balanced load distribution. It features a double-clip construction to prevent chain separation if clips are lost. Length tolerance of the pre-stressed chain is only 0.015 in. in 10 ft. The calculated ultimate average strength is 6100 lb. To build compressive loads and provide high tensile strength, the chain link plates have been shot peened. The bushings are high interference press-fit to eliminate tight joints. Shock resistant Hi-Alloy-Steel pins, as opposed to Hi-Carbon-Steel, are heat treated for maximum wear resistance. The pin ends are copper-plated before being heat treated, thus keeping the pin ends workable to facilitate alterations. Four popular sizes are available: 1/2 by 1/4; 1/2 by 5/16; 5/8 by 1/4; and 5/8 by 3/8. The Full Bore Master Link is also available separately in all popular sizes. For further information, contact Yankee Motor Co., Dept. CW-12, P.O. Box 36, Schenectady, NY 12301.

PISTON KIT
$99
Honda 750 riders interested in optimum performance have the option of incorporating Yoshimura Competition Component's slipper-type pistons into their power units. Designed for those who wish to stay within the 750cc classification, the slipper configuration pistons give a 10.5:1 compression ratio, greater strength and lighter weight. Design of the piston features skirts on the front and rear sides of the pistons only, with two rings and reinforced wrist pin areas. For strength, the components are high pressure die cast. The set of four pistons and standard racing rings is $99, postpaid from Yoshimura. For the rider who wants the added power of an overbore but also wants to retain enough wall thickness for first and second oversize boring, Yoshimura supplies an 812-cc piston kit. Specially cut, lightened, and relieved 350 pistons come complete with rings, wristpins and circlips for installation in the overbored cylinder; no special head gasket is required. According to Yoshimura, research has indicated that this is the optimum size for enlarging the 750 while still retaining the qualities of reliability and balance. The 812-cc kit is $100, also postpaid, from Yoshimura Competition Components, Dept. CW-12, P.O. Box 267, Waterford, CA 95386.

Common procedure for launching a new model is to accompany its debut with great publicity and fanfare, thus ensuring an enthusiastic reception for the new product. In the case of the V7 Sport, though, Moto Guzzi has adopted a reverse policy.
