CYCLE WORLD’S SHOW set some new records again, and there is a full report on it elsewhere in this issue. In this column, I want to thank a few special people. Duane Stone and various members of the clubs affiliated with the American Trials Association ran our trials course this year.

As you probably know, the U.K. and U.S.A. do not always see eye to eye. But the recent Easter motorcycle meetings over here between a British and an American team have proven to be an exception. I think these meetings have been a tremendous success.

I am currently rebuilding a 1964 (unit construction) BSA Royal Star Twin. I heard that it is possible to replace the stock 500-cc cylinders, pistons, and head in short, everything above the crankcase—with 650-cc BSA units, without any machining.

Readers are invited to have their say about motorcycles they own or have owned. Anything is fair game: performance, handling, reliability, service, parts availability, funkiness, lovability, you name it. Suggestions: be objective, be fair, no wildly emotional but ill-founded invectives; include useful facts like miles on odometer, time owned, model year, special equipment and accessories bought, etc. I just purchased a copy of your May '71 issue, and the first article that I read was your road test on the Triumph Bonneville.

ROAD ATLANTA IS probably the finest road racing circuit in America, combining uphill and downhill turns and a fast straightaway in a 2.5-mile lap. Some of the turns are practically blind, making a knowledge of the track mandatory. Off-camber stretches test the rider and his machine to the limit.

YAMAHA RIDERS have now won the 250 class at Daytona every year since 1965. That’s seven straight times. This year, their domination was so complete that the first 39 finishers were Yamaha-mounted. But the trampling of the rest of the field was no fluke, nor was it surprising.

THE DYNAMOMETER, or "dyno," a modern device used for power measurement, derives from an idea far from new. As long ago as 1790, a device invented by de Prony was available for determining torque at a given rotational speed by braking. Even today, all mechanical dynamometers are based on this simple principle.

MBI TOURING BAG
$18.50
Tourers may welcome the touring bag now offered by MBI, Dept. CW-8, P.O. Box 4171, Stamford, CT 06907. Versatility is a key attribute of the bag: on the motorcycle, it straps securely on the tank; off, it doubles as a knapsack with simple adjustments of the straps. Made in Holland, the touring bag is constructed of heavy-duty black naugahyde, and includes a foam-padded bottom to protect the tank, and harness leather straps to secure it to the bike. It also features a transparent map case. Dimensions of the touring bag are 10 in. wide by 15½ in. long by 9 in. high for the regular size, and 11½ in. wide by 16 in. long by 9 in. high for the deluxe size. It can hold a second helmet, clothes, packages, and gear, and will keep all enclosed items dry under normal riding conditions. It fits any medium or large cycle. Price of the regular touring bag is $15.50; the deluxe size can be purchased for $18.50. Purchase by check or money order; no C.O.D. Connecticut residents add 5 percent sales tax.

STRAIGHT CUT GEAR
$59.95
Frictional losses in the drive train are often responsible for reducing an engine’s power output. Straight cut gears, offered by Pacer Consolidated Industries, do not add power to the engine per se, but permit the engine to develop its full potential by removing side thrust from the crankshaft. The gears are composed of a highgrade ductile steel and a nickel-bronze alloy. Although not as quiet as the stock helical gears, the increase in performance should be a balancing factor for the serious competitor to consider. Designed for Yamahas, Pacer straight cuts are available only through authorized dealers. Suggested retail price is $43.95 for the AT-1 and CT-1 Yamaha Singles, and $59.95 for the 250-cc model DT-1. For additional information, write Pacer Consolidated Industries, Dept. CW-8, 17841 E. Valley Blvd., City of Industry, CA 91745, specifying item number G-5. For the color brochure and price list of Pacer’s product line, enclose 25 cents for handling.

CHAIN BREAKER
To avoid being stranded miles from nowhere with a broken chain, Pacer has designed the Beaver Tooth, a chain breaker tiny enough to hang on a control cable. It, a selection of chain master links for patching, and an adjustable wrench are all that is needed for a quick repair. For further information on the Beaver Tooth, write Pacer Consolidated Industries, Dept. CW-8, 17841 E. Valley Blvd., City of Industry, CA 91745.

In one of the most dramatic Italian meetings ever held at Riccione, MV teamster Angelo Bergamonti (Angiulin—“little Angel”-to his friends), died in a crash while chasing Giacomo Agostini in the 350 race. He was due to debut on the new six-cylinder model, but straddled the Three instead, because of the rain.

Somewhat overshadowed by the match race series held at the same meeting, the King of Brands title was disputed on the basis of a rider’s best performance in each of three races, 350, 500 and 1300cc. Despite opposition from Barry Sheene, Paul Smart, Tony Rutter and Charlie Sanby, victory went to Brian Kemp, an American-style racer with colorful leathers and a Bell Star helmet.
