ONE OF THE HIGHLIGHTS of Speed Week in Daytona each year is the Webco radio broadcasts. Each night Roxy Rockwood interviews riders and other motorcycling personalities on a local radio station that covers most of central Florida. In 1971 the broadcasts were made from the Hawaiian Inn, located on the famous Daytona “strip.” The nearby photo shows Rox interviewing National No. 1, Gene Romero.

I have been a fervent reader of your great magazine since 1967 and a subscriber since 1969, and I just realized, after reading your April issue from cover to cover, that I have failed to write you a letter of appreciation for the informative and pleasurable experience I receive every month from your publication.

I have a 1965 BSA 250 which is really giving me a headache. When I start it up in the morning, it belches clouds of blue smoke out the exhaust pipe. This smoking continues for a couple of minutes, and then stops. If I start the bike every two or three days, it doesn’t smoke, but if I let it sit for a week or so, it smokes.

Readers are invited to have their say about motorcycles they own or have owned. Anything is fair game: performance, handling, reliability, service, parts availability, funkiness, lovability, you name it. Suggestions: be objective, be fair, no wildly emotional but ill-founded invectives; include useful facts like miles on odometer, time owned, model year, special equipment and accessories bought, etc.

The English won the first Anglo-American match race series, but the American effort, headed by a consistent Dick Mann, was impressive indeed. Mann, in fact, finished 3rd in individual placings, only two points behind Englishmen Ray Pickrell and Paul Smart.

HOW FAST IS FAST is just as crazy a question as asking how long is a piece of cord. But if the cord is one-quarter of a mile long, and the time taken to get from one end to the other is 11.9 sec., then that time, translated into mph, is fast, plenty fast.

SOME 70 MILES SOUTH of Los Angeles, aside a calm, medium-sized lake and nestled between some roly-poly hills, which are surprisingly green for Southern California, sits the quiet little town of Elsinore. Sometime before the turn of the century, hot mineral waters were discovered in the area, and for a while the community boomed with rich tourists and development dollars.

IT MAY BE SAID without inspiring much argument that there are two 250-cc enduro machines sold in the United States today which immediately bring to mind the word, "Professional." The Ossa Pioneer is one of them. It (and the Bultaco Matador) is designed uncompromisingly to do its appointed job.

HONDA'S MOST POPULAR machine is not one of the ultra-smooth Fours, nor is it the disc-braked 450 dohc. The honor, based on sales figures, goes to the sohc 325-cc Twin, in its various forms. It is a definitive machine. Its basic design, descended from Honda’s first medium-displacement Hawk and Superhawk Twins, is original, well-proven and has been followed in whole or part by manufacturers in Japan, Italy, Austria and Great Britain.

IT SCARES ME. Continually. Lap after lap. I don't even have to know race is on, or who is leading. The eery fascination of a super-competent motorcycle rider pitching his machine as fast as he can around a dirt oval, suspended on a slender string between ultimate traction and sliding disaster, is enough to hold me.

THE TYPICAL FLAT TRACKER is an amalgamation of various accessory manufacturers' bits and pieces. Calling a Triumph flat tracker Triumph, for example, is like calling apples pears. It just ain’t so. Of course, the engine/transmission package is of Triumph design and manufacture, but little else on the machine is.

IF YOU THINK about it, it's only logical that Southern California is the motorcycle road racing hub of the United States. TUNE-EM
$49.50
For Honda Four owners who prefer to do their own carburetor tuning, Dixie Tool & Die Co. is offering “Tune-Em” to facilitate the project. A special vacuum gauge set-up is utilized by this unit to synchronize the carburetors. It includes four vacuum gauges, valve snubbers to minimize flutter, metric adapters, tubing, necessary gaskets and instructions. Set-up can be accomplished without removing the gas tank, and the unit is visible from either side of the cycle while adjustments are being made. The problem of switching back and forth to read each cylinder’s action, which was a drawback with the singlegauge permanent mounted carb tuners, is eliminated in the Tune-Em unit. Retail price for the Model 4 TuneEm is $49.50; it can be shipped prepaid anywhere in the U.S. Send check or money order to Dixie Tool & Die Co., Dept. CW-7, 1054 Douglas Ave., Aurora, IL 60538.

MIDI-CYCLE
Take a 100-cc Hodaka five-speed engine, add a tube frame, swinging arm suspension. Ceriani-like front forks with over 6 in. of travel, and 16-in. wheels, and you come up with Bonanza Industries' latest creation—the Midi-cycle. According to Bonanza, it handles like no other compact and is designed for motorcycle competition. The big wheels give the Midi better flotation and directional stability, and allow a full 12 in. of clearance between frame and ground. It has folding handlebars, so it still fits into a car trunk. You can take it to the boonies with no trouble at all and have a ball. The machine is controlled with big bike ball-end levers and twist grips. The wide motocross handlebars are adjustable to your riding style, and a soft, upholstered seat is fitted. Bonanza President Mike Farrand claims the Midi may be the first compact motorcycle to be mass produced in the U.S. (only the engine and spoke rims are imported). All this is said to be a prelude to a 125-cc motocross racer to be introduced next spring. For further information, contact Bonanza Industries, Inc., Dept. CW-7, 1775 South First Street, San Jose, CA 95l12.

A cold day and some occasional drizzles didn't prevent over 30.000 fans from flocking to the Modena autodrome for the opening of the Italian, as well as the European, season. Unfortunately, the traditional Ago-Paso match did not occur because Paso is now riding the new 250 Aermacchi/H-D. With early leaders Lombardi (Guazzoni) and Parlotti (Tomos) both out with ignition troubles, the 50cc class proved a walk-over for world champion Nieto (Derbi).

The British road race season has started in classic style with a club meeting being canceled because of snow. Nevertheless, the first national at Mallory Park started in bright sunshine, though it was very cold. Man of the day, Barry Sheene, cleaned up on 250 and 350 Yamahas and took the 125 class as well on his ex-works, 10-speed Suzuki.

At a recent All Japan Motocross meeting, still another Susuki MX prototype made its debut. This time, it's a 125, which looks very similar in design to both the RH and RN 71s reported in this column last month. Prototypes rarely win the first few races in which they are entered.

The Editors have had a terrible time dreaming up a caption for this picture of Dick Mann and Jimmy Odom. Our choices: "Would you believe that they had a rodeo on this track last week?" And: "J.O., if you want to look good in pictures, you purse your lips, you don't lick them."
