HONDA TRAIL GUIDES are the latest thing to come from the omnipotent American Honda Motor Co. Trail Guides are for those who spend endless week-ends in Southern California searching for open areas in which they can ride. Since so much land is steadily being closed, the guides are an invaluable aid.

A suggestion, if it’s not out of line. How about a contest to think up a slogan and emblem to encourage quiet operation of motorcycles? Such as "Muffle up and make friends." It could spread to snowmobiles, ATVs, dune buggies, etc. It is always good to start something good, like a better image for cycles.

A new, independent racing team will mount a serious challenge to the East Coast’s established motocross stars in the coming professional racing season. The Cycle Sports Center, a retail motorcycle shop and mail order business in Binghamton, N.Y. has contracted the services of two riders and a team manager/tuner to form a highly organized effort to compete in the professional motocross circuit to date.

In connection with your specification figures on various machines, I have a question to ask. I have sometimes checked them and found a considerable disagreement as to your computed top speeds at a given rpm. For instance, in your February 1971 issue for the Yamaha RT-1B on page 41, computed top speed in gears at 6500 rpm is: 5th, 73; 4th, 57; 3rd, 44; 2nd, 32; and 1st, 22.

May I add my two cents to what Richard Kennedy and Robert Bausch have said about the Norton Commando (February issue)? I own a Commando and have put quite a few miles on a Honda Four, and would have to admit that in any objective analysis the Honda is the superior machine.

IN THE February issue of CYCLE WORLD this column took to task the American Motorcycle Association Competition Congress for not taking a harder position on the restriction of noise in all Sportsman (now Amateur) competition. In the May issue I went after the dealers about using more discretion when selling machines with full expansion chambers, or converting to loud exhaust systems for non-racing purposes.

IT'S A GOOD THING that tastes differ. Where, for example, would Moto-Guzzi be if everyone insisted on riding light, nimble motorcycles? Light and nimble the Ambassador ain't. The big 750 is tank-like, in fact, and therein may lie a clue to its appeal.

IN 1965, the Suzuki X-6 was just about the fastest 250 two-stroke Twin to be had. CYCLE WORLD'S road test of the first X-6 in the October, 1965 issue showed a 15.3-sec. standing quarter-mile with a trap speed of 84 mph. An impressive 92-mph top speed was attained, a good speed for most 350 machines then available.

ENGINE DISPLACEMENT is a relative thing. Ideally, a powerplant should be large enough to do the job at hand, but no larger. It is a practical theory, but in reality, most bikes fall into certain classic displacement categories—125, 175, 250, 500, etc.

He did it last year on a Honda. He did it this year on a BSA. And both times, Dick Mann's strategy was the same. Hang in there and wait for the jackrabbits to break. Which they did. First came the opening two-lap chase after Cal Rayborn's quick accelerating factory Harley, which ended as his gearbox failed.

PACER'S NEW PLUG PRODUCT
$3.39
For those dual-purpose Yamaha Enduro models that must perform well in both on-the-street and off-road conditions, Pacer has designed a pair of plugs which will help them do just that. The plugs will fit all models from 125 through 360cc. Made of machined aluminum, they fit exactly into the holes where the tachometer and speedometer drive cables have been removed to lighten weight of the machine for off-road competition. The O-ring seals are used to assure more complete protection against dirt and mud entering the works. The tachometer plug (photo left) has a milled flat for indexing on the engine, and both plugs are retained with the stock clamps. Retail price per set is $3.39, available only through selected motorcycle dealers. For more information and a color brochure of other products and accessories available through Pacer, write Pacer Consolidated Industries, Dept. CW-6, 17841 E. Valley Blvd., City of Industry, CA 91745. Enclose 25 cents for handling and specify item number G-6.

HODAKA BIG BORE KIT
$129.95
Owners of 98-cc Hodaka motorcycles (Hodaka ACE 100, ACE 100B, and ACE 100MX) now have available to them a 125-cc conversion kit, offered by Webco Inc. The fully race-tested kit offers an approximate increase of 25 percent in power. Coupled with its extreme light weight, it should prove to be competitive in its class. Due to the increased finning on the Webco "Big Bore" cylinder barrel and head, the engine will be more able to utilize the increase in power without overheating. Included in the kit is an all new alloy head and cylinder, a 56-mm piston, and all gaskets, nuts, bolts and washers necessary to completely install the unit. The part number is 2141, and price is $129.95. Available through motorcycle dealers throughout the U.S. and Canada.

SPECIAL ENGINE STAND
Joe Bolger Products has created a special engine stand to facilitate engine overhauls. Constructed of heavy-gauge square tubing, the stand has been strength tested to 800 lb. successfully. It is equipped with a locking caster of the forward leg, and the drain pan stand pulls off to make it possible to flush cases or run the leg under a bench. The cases can be split and a complete overhaul can be carried out without removing the engine from the stand. Mounting the engine is made easy by dropping the stand to its lowest position. The engine can be rotated a full 360 degrees, and raised or lowered through a 45-degree range. An adapter to attach the engine to the stand has been built for the 750 Honda, and it can be used for other Honda units as well. Any engine from 50 to 1200cc's can be attached by simply bolting the particular adapter to the stand. Rotating and vertical adjustment possibilities are infinite; there are no holes, pins or "slop" to bother the mechanic during critical operations. The stand is immediately available and can be shipped on short notice. For further information, mail inquiries to Joe Bolger Products, Dept. CW-6, Summer St., Barre, Mass.

TRAIL-BREAKER MARK IV
Rokon, Inc. is offering the Trail-Breaker Mark IV, an all-terrain vehicle equipped with two-wheel drive. A smaller version of the Explorer Mark III, it is capable of maneuvering at speeds as slow as 1/2 mph. Top speed is 30 mph. According to the manufacturer, it will climb a 50-degree slope. A new automatic torque converter aids ease of handling. No shifting is required. The extra wide, low pressure tires, which leave less of an impression in dirt than a man's footprints, should appeal to conservationists. Additionally, it is equipped with a U.S. forestry qualified muffler, and can be registered for road travel, with options. For further information, write to Rokon, Inc., Dept. CW-6, 160 Emerald St., Keene, NH 03431.

NO-FLAT
$1.95
Sudden flat tires that can prove disastrous to motorcyclists can be prevented with the addition of No-Flat, manufactured by Tesco Products. Following the insertion of four ounces of No-Flat in a motorcycle tire (eight ounces are required for automobile tires), the manufacturer claims that punctures up to 1/8 in. in diameter will be sealed instantly for the life of the tire. No-Flat can be used in extreme climactic conditions ranging from intense desert heat to freezing Alaskan weather. It is odorless, nonflammable, water soluble, and cannot affect wheel balance. Distributed by Marketing Consultants Ltd. of Calif., No-Flat costs $1.95 per eight ounce bottle.
