NOISE POLLUTION I agree with Mr. Wagar’s comments on noise pollution from racing motorcycles. The old four-strokes were tolerable to spectators and added to the atmosphere of the events. However, the dominance of the two-stroke racers produces excessive noise.

J.N. Roberts took his 3rd consecutive victory in the fourth annual Barstow-to-Las Vegas Hare and Hound. More then 2000 desert riders either followed him across the finish line or called it a day somewhere along the 140-mile course. In the biggest turnout yet for this San Gabriel Valley Motorcycle Club sponsored event, literally thousands of California and Nevada motorcycle enthusiasts were on hand to see Roberts complete the rough course in 3 hr.

CT-1 ELECTRICS This is in answer to switch hitter, Charles Jacob Jr. from Rocky Ford, Colo., who has battery problems with his CT-1. I also have a CT-1 Enduro, and the battery is really too small for the machine. I’ve done a considerable amount of checking on the same problem, and can state that the rear stoplight operates on both the generator and the battery.

THOSE OF THE HONDA generation who don’t know what it is like to ride a “purist” road machine would do well to examine the Norton Commando. If English roadsters can be said to have a feeling, a way of behaving, a way of looking that no other motorcycles in the world can quite duplicate, then the Commando can be said to epitomize that feeling at its best.

LITTLE OF THE available motorcycle technical literature concerns itself with theoretical and practical aspects of motorcycle braking. Although this reflects largely the average rider's predilection for going fast (books on hop-up techniques abound) as opposed to stopping fast, it leaves a considerable gap in most riders' repertoire of bench racing subjects.

WITH FOUR CYLINDERS, a cush-drive in the rear sprocket assembly and meticulously worked out carburetion, the Honda CB750 is one of the smoothest motorcycles in the world. If the four carburetors become maladjusted, however, the feeling of riding a smooth running electric motor gives way to a feeling of frustration.

Someone once described a motocross race as a series of controlled crashes mixed with a streak of phenomenally close-calls. That's an ironic observation. It's also right on. Running a motocross race is like going up the middle against the Minnesota Vikings, every yard you advance you pay for.

ONE OF THE most fascinating aspects of motorcycle history is the study of the many important innovations in design that have occurred over the years. Many companies all over the world have played an important role in this evolution of the motorcycle, and a particularly brilliant idea has often been the cause of a company or country taking the lead on both the sales floor and the world’s great racing courses.

PASO LEAVES BENELLI Fed up with promises of new mounts that never materialized and angered by frequent talks of hiring Hailwood or Agostini as first-string riders, Renzo Pasolini left Benelli. The unorthodox stylist, however, has no intention of abandoning racing, and has already approached Jawa and Aermacchi for suitable mounts.

LONGER ROAD RACE SEASON The European road race season gets longer each year. The last important international meeting of 1970 was held in France on the brand new Paul Ricard circuit near Marseille. It meant a happy season’s end for Dave Simmonds (Kawasaki) whose bad luck most of the year cost him the world title.
