MY LEG, broken about this time last year in an over-eager burst of enthusiasm, is now fully recovered. So I recently took delivery of a new motocross bike for my weekly “golf game” at Saddleback Park, as Ed sold my 360 Maico shortly after the accident.

IVAN J. WAGAR
SOME twenty years ago, a very tragic thing happened at the Isle of Man. During practice and race weeks not less than six riders were killed, with head injuries being the contributing factor in all but one death. Most of the natives, and the people closely associated with the races, gravely nodded their heads over the fact that the world’s most dangerous circuit had again proven its superiority over man.

JODY NICHOLAS I was wondering if you could set me straight. I own a 1970 Kawasaki 350-cc Big Horn scrambler. I’d like to put one of those “muscle kits” in it to raise the standard 33 hp to 45 hp. This kit includes a new head and cylinder and a new piston and expansion chamber.

MONTESA HAS BEEN sorely late in providing its followers with a true combination street/trail machine. The old Scorpion was basically a street bike, which showed up street bike deficiencies when applied to earnest trailing use. The King Scorpion follows the route successfully pioneered by two other Spanish manufacturers—i.e., take a dirt machine and make it usable on the pavement.

FOR ONE-TIME child prodigy Eddie Mulder, there will never be another moment like Big Bear. The raw red desert sun was low on the horizon in spring of 1960 when Mulder roared across the tape at Fawn-skin near Big Bear Lake as winner of the biggest, toughest desert race in California.

THE 1970 TT RACES round the 373/4-mile mountain circuit, for which the Isle of Man is famous to motorcyclists throughout the world, took place in what were probably the finest conditions ever experienced. During the 11 practice sessions, only once was there mist to contend with on the mountain where the course rises to its highest point of 1500 feet from virtual sea level in Ramsey.

IF THE RICKMAN BROTHERS will be remembered in motorcycling, it will be for the salvation of the big bore dirt machine. Vive la Triumph, vive-la Bay-Ess-Ah, vive la Matchless. Le quatre-temps est mort, vive la Metisse! By doing what the majority of major manufacturers failed to do—i.e., building decent handling scrambles frames for their thumpers and twins—they started a whole new trend in America and overseas and kept four-stroke lovers deliriously happy.

Scotchlite
A new reflective safety trim kit for use on motorcycle, snowmobile and other sporting helmets has been announced by 3M Company’s reflective products division. Supplied with three 1by 4-in. strips of silver Scotchlite brand reflective sheeting, the kits provide an easy, inexpensive means of adding nighttime visibility to rider and passenger. The trim can be used on new or old helmets, and it meets legal requirements in states requiring reflective materials on safety helmets. Adhesive-backed for easy application, the sheeting is a retro-reflective material that reflects light back to its source from a wide angle. Strips can be placed individually on helmets or cut into decorative patterns, depending on preferences. Each strip provides a brilliant white safety warning at night, even when wet. More than 200 times brighter than white paint, the reflective sheeting is similar to that used in reflective traffic signs and license plates and is visible up to 1200 feet in the beams from headlights of oncoming cars, according to 3M. Thirty-eight states require that motorcyclists wear protective headgear. Of these, 14 require at least some reflection for nighttime visibility. Scotchlite Helmet Safety Trim Kits are available from local hardware, auto accessory, motorcycle and snowmobile shops at the price of 59 cents each.

Frank’s Maintenance and Engineering, of Evanston, Ill., announces the availability of its one-piece extended fork tube kits for Harley-Davidson, Triumph, BSA, Norton, Enfield, Matchless, Honda, Suzuki and Kawasaki. Each tube is made from one piece of steel, machined and threaded to work exactly like the factory originals, only longer. Their steel specifications equal or exceed those required by the manufacturers for tensil strength and psi, and the tubes are cold-formed and cold-machined. The product is safe and unwelded. Installation is done with normal tools by taking the forks apart and re-assem-bling, using the over-stock tubes and spacers. Any length from 1 in. over stock is available. Prices are $65 up to and including 8 in. over stock; $75 over 8 in. plus $1 per inch per tube. Chroming is $15 per set extra. Be sure to include make, model and year of cycle when ordering. Also available are chromed collars for cycles with outside springs. The decennial of the Aermacchi/Harley-Davidson union was celebrated in May at the Schiranna works on the shores of beautiful lake Varese in northern Italy.
