NOT LONG AGO Bond Publishing, home of Road & Track and Car Life magazines and a division of Bond, Parkhurst & Bond (or BPB as we fondly call it), bought the life's work of one of Europe's leading motoring photographers, Kurt Worner. The fantastic collection of automobile and motorcycle photographs dates back to the early 30's and contains some extremely precious and irreplaceable shots.

ON CONTINGENCY MONEY On the matter of contingency money, let us see if this shoe fits. When your magazine runs reports on all major events in both dirt and road racing, it could list all contingency money and donors so that we out here in cycle land would know who or what manufacturers really give a damn about the future of racing.

ILLINOIS SUCCESS STORY
Fighting the Mandatory Helmet Law
[no value]
[no value]
LEE STROBEL
A GROUP OF SEVEN Illinois men, unversed in legislative procedures and without the help of any motorcycle manufacturer, distributor or magazine, brought about the repeal of the Illinois mandatory helmet law. “There are a lot of laws which are inconvenient and discriminate against motorcyclists,” said Reed N. Ehrlich, 46, a Chicago businessman and organizer of the campaign.

I now own a ’67 T100R, 500-cc Triumph. I wish to do extensive touring with two up and I thought a conversion to a single carb would make life a lot easier. Does the T100C single carb manifold bolt directly to the T100R head? The dealers around here seem to be at odds about this.

YAMAHA HAS BROKEN away from the pseudo-scrambler school of styling for its street bikes, judging by the new R5 350. No more high crossbar handlebars and bulky upswept exhaust systems. The R5 is sleek and most definitely a roadster, engineered for the rider who likes to straighten out a winding mountain road or cruise effortlessly down a freeway.

THE GREATEST uncontrolled hazard to the careful motorcycle rider is the truck or automobile driver who seems, more often than not, blind to the presence of bikes on the highway. At night, good headlights are effective signalers, but during the daytime most bike riders have no effective signals to warn of their approach.

HONDA'S ONE-SHOT entry and win at this year's Daytona classic brings to mind one of the most remarkable stories in motorcycling. Soichiro Honda is legend, a genius who put the Japanese on the international motorcycling map. Prior to the middle 1950s, Japan was an absolute nothing in motorcycle production, with only a few small companies producing a handful of archaic models that looked like something produced in Germany way back in the early 1930s.

"Nothing succeeds like success” must be Skip Van Leeuwen’s theme song as he breezed to his fourth straight 100-lap TT win at Ascot Park in Gardena, Calif. Skip has won this annual twist-and-turn steeplechase a total of five times. He overcame a spill late in the race to show the packed grandstands why he deserves the title of the “Flying Dutchman.” Remounting, he came within nine seconds of lapping the entire field.

LAKE FUEL INJECTOR
The Lake injector is built specifically for motorcycle and other small engine applications. Lake Research and Development Company claims a 10 percent to 15 percent hp increase throughout the power range when compared with the standard carburetion system. Several different flange mounts, bell lengths and throat diameters are available. This efficient fuel metering system features a fully adjustable range from idle to full throttle. Adjustment is carried out by simply turning a low or high speed knob. This injector depends on gravity for fuel flow and is not a diaphragm type. It will operate in any position, and air cleaners of various types can be fitted. Prices start at $53.50. Please state type of mounting, engine type and size, and throat diameter desired when ordering. Write to Lake R & D, Dept. CW-6, P.O. Box 909, Lake Isabella, CA 93240 for further information.

The opening meeting of the road race season in England is usually a very cold affair at Mallory Park. 1970 was no exception, with many competitors complaining about the start being so early in the year. Most people seem to think that Good Friday should see the first road race of the year, but the plain fact is that riders will compete at every opportunity, particularly at the smaller club meetings.

After years of disinterest in the American racing scene, Honda sharpened and polished up a few of their four-cylinder 750 engines, wound chrome-moly frames around them, doubled up the discs for hot road race braking, and put them on the airplane for the USA. And promptly won what has become the most important road race in the world.
