JOE PARKHURST
LAST SUMMER I had an extremely pleasurable visit to the Norton-Villiers factory in Andover. England, in the company of the firm’s dynamic managing director, Dennis Poore. I got a first-hand look at the shiny, spanking new assembly plant and the production of the new AJS 250 and 370 motocross bikes, one of which is tested in this issue.

May I first say that I think yours is the finest motorcycle publication on the market. Now, down to the reason for this letter. I have just learned that the AMA has set a 16-year-old age limit on all AMA speed events. Well now, I, like many others who have sons that race who are not 16, am going to get mad as hell if we must take our riders and machines off the sportsman tracks.

THERE'S MAGIC in names. Success makes them magic. It begins when someone sticks his neck out—bare and clean on the chopping block—and culminates when the trials of time and experience set him free. Through hindsight such risks seem an easy price to pay, yet experience will always be the world's most valuable commodity.

WHO NEEDS A 500 Triumph? After all, horsepower is where it's at, right? You pay a little more for a 650 or 750 and you get your bhp. It's that simple. Sorry, but we don't agree. We have a certain feeling about the 500. Partly because 500 cc is the classic limit in international competition, and was the mainstay of AMA "Class C" racing until 1969.

MARVELOUS, not a ring-ding to be seen," remarked one irreverent fan as 18 lusty 500-cc single-cylinder four-strokes warmed up in the pit confine at Wembley stadium prior to the start of the 1969 World Speedway Championship Final. Two of the 18 were reserves for a 16-man contest—this the greatest night in the cinder shifting year.

The Honda Four chain could be lubricated in the normal fashion. However, if the present system appears to issue too much oil, it may be worth trying to reduce the quantity of oil being supplied by employing a smaller metering orifice. Most Hondas seem a little over geared, particularly when a passenger is carried.

There is a mild resurgence in the popularity of big motorcycles in Japan these days; while domestic sales have leveled off to about 600,000 a year (having peaked out at 720,000 in 1967), the number of 350-cc and bigger displacement machines is steadily increasing: 12,800 in 1967, 18,000 in 1968 and 20,000 in 1969.

DIRTDIGGERS GRAND PRIX
AMA PARADOX NO. 75
FLORIDA INDOOR SET
[no value]
[no value]
[no value]
The Dirtdiggers Grand Prix is something of a grand tradition in California, and in recent years lays claim to being one of the biggest dirt bike events in the United States. It’s a fun race to ride, partly because of its setting at Hopetown/ex-Corriganville, an old movie ranch, and partly because of combining fast TT and bumpy motocross conditions over a 2.8-mile course.

B. R. NICHOLLS
Giacomo Agostini has made his decision. He will race the MV Agusta machinery in 1970, defending his two world titles, rather than change to Ferrari and four wheels or become an idol of the Italian film-going public. It wasn’t an easy decision for the handsome Italian, who was also being pursued by Benelli for his riding talents.

REPORT FROM ITALY
THE LAVERDA 1000 THREE
ITALJET CYCLECAR RECORDS
[no value]
[no value]
CARLO PERELLI
It had been talked about for a long time. Then, earlier this year, the speculation died when the factory confirmed the rumors. The new Laverda 1000 Three is not the first multi on the Italian motorcycling scene but with 980 cc it is one of the largest.

MEMO: From: Testing To: Engineering 1) Performance on hillcimbs is excellent with good stability through mud and water sections. 2) Downhill, it is somewhat halting. 3) Handlebars well placed but tend to get soggy in rain. 4) Footpegs need a bit more work.
