THE INTERNATIONAL Six Days Trial, held in Garmisch, Partenkirchen, Germany, looked like an AMA event, there were so many Americans present. I went along to watch, take a few pictures, and drum up things for American motorcycling. Our riders performed outstandingly well, and received attention from everyone, particularly officials of the FIM. Comments generally were how much our riders had improved.

WHAT a fantastic sales year this has been for the American motorcycle industry. After two comparatively lean years, 1969 will surpass the previous record season, 1966, by a good margin. Though it still is too early to gather accurate sales figures, experts predict nearly 700,000 new motorcycles will be sold during this calendar year.

I own a DT1-B Yamaha which I enjoyed very much the first 1000 miles. It runs fine until warm, then it starts to ping and detonate at light to heavy throttle. I did nothing to cause this that I know of. I had the dealer check it when this problem started.

I would very much like to take this opportunity to clarify some facts. This is prompted by many articles [in other publications] we have had the misfortune to read, regarding John De Soto and Ron Nelson’s premature return to the United States from Europe.

Although it took several days to verify, complicated lap charts proved Frank Camillieri and Andres “Andy” Lascoutx, both of Boston, won the Five Hour Production Marathon at Ontario’s Harewood Acres. At the end of the second annual marathon, which 40 machines entered, there was more than a mild difference of opinion over which team had won.

RARE IS THE ROAD RIDER who has not, regardless of what he is riding, twisted the throttle just a little harder than is necessary to get from Point A to Point B. BRYON FARNSWORTH
THE SACRAMENTO MILE must be one of the most exciting spectacles in motorcycle competition. This fact was certain to all present, as the AMA's finest put on an absolute heartstopper of a show. Current national point leader Mert Lawwill, who won his first national championship race at the Sacto dirt oval in 1965, was a likely favorite on his H-D. He runs quite well on this track, although several factors, not the least of which was the new displacement limit, would work against him.

THE SL350 has aroused a great deal of curiosity. Honda fans wondered if they were finally going to get a real dirt bike. Even the people at American Honda were curious. And now that the SL350 is here, they are not quite sure what they have. One end of Honda’s policy pipeline says that the bike is designed primarily as a dirt machine, with a number of compromises to allow the rider to operate it on the street.

In that respect history was against them and their own performance in previous years was not encouraging; their best was in 1968 when they were 2nd to Sweden.

IN SPITE OF the absence of such super-pizazz racers as Agostini, Pasolini, Bergamonti, Vinsenzi, Gould and Nelson, the Italian Grand Prix proved an epochal event. World Champion of the 500 and 350 classes, Giacomo Agostini, didn’t compete because his boss and mentor, Count Agusta, was miffed at the race’s change of venue from Monza (virtually his own back yard) to Imola.

CHINESE ROPE TRICK
$4.95
Steen’s offers a novel tie-down strap. Made of nylon, it is woven to form a hollow rope. By threading one end back through the hollow center, different length loops may be obtained. The holding power is gained by the “Chinese Handcuff” principle, and the more tension applied, the stronger it holds. To release the loop, simply relieve the tension on the upper portion of the rope that is outside of the hollow center, and pull some slack in the loop. Metal hooks are provided for different applications. Price is $4.95 per pair from Steen’s Inc., Dept. CW-12, P.O. Box 2276J, Alhambra, CA 91803.

The increasing number of women cyclists, both riders and passengers, often have found available wearing apparel not exactly suited to feminine taste. Blue jeans and a hand-me-down leather jacket are not what the style conscious female rider cares to be seen in.
