BACK WHEN I started CYCLE WORLD, good old Floyd Clymer published Cycle magazine, our only real competitor. Later he sold it to a big New York publishing company. Instead of dropping out of the motorcycle scene, Floyd launched himself in the motorcycle industry as an importer.

THE Federal Blackjack, a term frequently used these days, briefly describes the power behind compulsory helmet legislation for motorcyclists. The term evolved after the National Highway Safety Bureau presented a “safety package” to the federal government about three years ago, known as the Highway Safety Act of 1966.

I am a 54-year-old antique Indian dealer, having sold and serviced Indian motorcycles back in 1936-38 in Quincy, Ill. I now am in the process of restoring a 1940 Indian Four and sidecar outfit. I have many back issues of your fine magazine as I try to keep up with the sport I loved during my youth.

Have just completed the delightful “Oaf Test” (CW, July ’69). With a brutally honest “Squirrel” score of 147, or an “Expert” score of 164, allowing for careless errors, correct intent and basically sound impulses (perhaps born of some 15 years experience as a sports car nut), am I to be permitted to keep my beloved Ducati Diana Mk III, or am I summarily demoted to do penance with the 50-cc teeny-boppers until I learn the error of my ways?

OF THE NEW Campera’s personality, the most striking trait is its stability. Designed within is a gyroscopic faculty all its own. But more than that, the basic theme of the bike is balance. It succeeds beautifully in its purpose of being a good handling, but street capable, dirt bike.

AMONG THE hard core motorcycle touring enthusiasts of the world there are about three groups that favor Twins. These Twin devotees can be divided into Vees, Verticals and Horizontals. The latter group, for reasons known only to themselves, have developed into the most rigid, adamant bunch of “individuals'' in motorcycling.

SINCE FOUR-TIME world champion Torsten Hallman first churned his wheels in American turf, motocross has grown in the United States by giant strides. In 1967, when Husqvarna and CZ each sent a three-man team to compete in the States, they completely annihilated the best American motocrossers, and at the same time they instilled an ineluctable desire in the Yankee enthusiast to test his skill in Europe.

THE LURE OF THE Isle of Man classic Tourist Trophy races is inexplicable. At a time when costs of racing are spiraling, the 1969 entry reached a record total and the lack of works machinery did nothing to keep the crowds away. The backbone of the TT is the private owner whose aim is that “silver” which he will get if he can finish the race within 3/16ths of the average time of the first six finishers.

Five-eighths of a mile in length, the Heidelberg, Pa. track is known as the “squirrelly circuit.” With its kidney-like configuration, tight turns and asphalt paving, the nickname is no fluke. In fact, Bart Markel, the only rider expressing favor with the track, and Cal Rayborn both got in trouble there.

MOTOCROSS FENDER BRACE
$13.95
Webco, Inc., offers this new polished aluminum motocross fender brace for 125-, 175-, and 250-cc Yamahas. The unit is said to be made of a super-strong alloy, and it features lightening holes and a profiled finish. It is also adaptable to most other machines of 250 cc and up, and can be used with either flat or radiused fenders. The high-style brace (part No. 2000) is ideal for motocross, enduros, desert and trail riding. Available through motorcycle dealers, it can also be obtained directly from Webco, Inc., Dept. CW-9, 218 Main St., Venice, CA 90293. Price is $13.95 (California residents add 5 percent sales tax).

NEW DUNSTALL CAFE RACER
$1400
Paul Dunstall, English high-perfor mance entrepreneur, has incorporated several design improvements in the lat est Dunstall 750 Triumph export model. A hot street-race camshaft is now fitted to the engine, along with a set of higher capacity main bearings, to augment power and reliability. For better han dling, the swinging arm has been strengthened and is also chrome plated. The improved fiberglass dual seat now has a toolbox and the fairing has been stiffened to minimize vibration of the instrument panel. Other modifications include a polished disc brake hub rather than the previous rough cast unit, chrome engine mounting plates, and a five-gallon fuel tank for long distance cruising. The machine's price remains unaltered at $1400. Because factory literature supplies no part number for that most attractive improvement of all, we must assume research and develop ment(!) are not yet completed. Those interested in the cafe racer (the one with wheels) contact Paul Dunstall Motorcycles, Dept. CW-9, 156 Well Hall Road, London, S.E. 9 England.

TIE-DOWN STRAPS
Not only can a poorly secured motor cycle be damaged by banging around in your truck or trailer, it may cause an accident. And rather than entangle yourself in a maze of rope and twine, it's easiest and quickest to invest in several strong tie-down straps. Motad straps feature 2000 lb. tensile strength nylon webbing and a positive locking, quick release stainless steel buckle. The lightweight tie-downs are a bright or ange color and are available in 1.5-, 3and 5-yard lengths from Webco, Inc., Dept. CW-9, Box 429, Venice, CA 90291.

CYCLING SUIT
From Raven Industries, of Sioux Falls, S.D., comes a new jump suit expressly for motorcycling. Made of two-ply nylon, the Rogue cycle suit is said to be thoroughly wind and water proof while it "breathes" with the body. The Rogue allows protection from the weather but still provides for comfort and ventilation during physical exertion-just the thing for enduros, trialing and off-road stints on mountain trails. The Rogue nylon is claimed to give maximum comfort because it lets body moisture out, rather than trapping it against the skin. Designed for sport cycling in any weather, the Rogue is available in three colors, high-visibility orange, brilliant blue, and raven black. The suit also has an adjustable waist band and half-belt, three zippered pock ets, a hood, and zipper legs to accom modate boots. The Rogue is available at many cycle dealers and sporting goods dealers in five sizes from small to extra-large.

LOCTITE PRODUCTS
Although most home mechanics are well familiar with Loctite thread locking compounds, not everyone is aware of the many other related products of that company. The Loctite Corporation, North Mountain Road, Newington, CT 06111, lists many useful cQmpounds valuable to the motorcycle enthusiast. Along with several different thread lock ing solutions, the company manufac tures a bearing mounting fluid that hardens to a plastic film. This makes press fits more reliable, improves align ment and restores fit to worn housings. A bushing mounting adhesive is also available. The Loctite company also produces a key locking solution, several sealing compounds, "Plastic Gasket," weld sealants, solvents and many adhe sives for varied applications.

Bad weather and politics burdened the 21st Valli Bergamasche (Bergamo Valley), one of the most famous and difficult ISDT-type trials of the world. Rain, wind and even snow nullified the advantages of a cut in the course’s length and the emergency schedule adopted by the international jury— Bergamasche was as tough as ever.

One meeting that road race fans look forward to each season, particularly those that cannot get to the Isle of Man TT, is the Mallory Park event, held two days after the Senior. It is an ideal stopping off point for riders returning to the Continent, and this year the big attraction, of course, was Giacomo Agostini.

The Suzuka circuit hosted the second round of the MFJ-sanctioned All-Japan Championship Race. The hotly contested road race was also televised by a Japanese network, a type of coverage sadly lacking in the U.S. Unlike the Fuji Speedway, where the first round of the series was held, the Suzuka circuit features more curves, and a straightaway a shade less than one-half mile long.
