THE 1969 INTERNATIONAL American motocross series is tentatively scheduled. Inter-Am opens in Sweden with a Swedish Team Championship race, though points garnered there probably will not apply in the series. A decision is yet to be made on this point, as Inter-Am is, primarily, an American series.

DAYTONA, the big one, is over for another year. There will be other AMA road race nationals (granted, not enough) but all of them put together will not equal the prestige of Daytona. And the arguments and ill feelings over the one-week postponement of the 200-miler will be debated in bench racing sessions for many months to come.

I have a slight problem with my 1968 BSA Lightning. The front brake, which I like very much except for one thing, tends to shudder when placed under an all-on stop. What could be the possible cause of this shudder? When I ordered my bike I requested that it be equipped with the Spitfire camshaft but BSA told me that both the Lightning and the Spitfire had the same camshaft.

Your road test on the Triumph 650 (CW, March '69) would have been just as interesting without the few lines of criticism focused toward the Bonney and its riders. “It takes a real speed freek (sic) to shell out cash for those “extra low e.t.’s,” does it?

THERE IS A BREED of motorcyclist endemic to England but increasingly common in the U.S.—the cafe racer. The English cafe racer/enthusiast is a sight to behold. Rather than the lazy ape-hangers and sissy bars of supine highway cruising, his bike sports clip-ons, rear set pegs, and road racing tank and seat suited for prone navigation of the cobblestone.

THAT A SCOOTER resembles a motorcycle in so many respects is purely an accident, and a pretty good illustration of the old adage: “Form follows function.” The basic scooter design is—even today—about as close to the family car concept as it is to the motorcycle.

AH, DAYTONA. Sleepy Florida coast town of dank motels, little old retired ladies, corny music and slow service—an odd setting for America’s biggest motorcycle road race. But it is the closest thing to the Isle of Man that we can muster, and there are even a few similarities.

THE FACTORY HARLEYS had been having trouble all week. After official practice on the morning of the Daytona 200-miler, Bart Markel shook his head and told Jerry Branch that he had to make another carburetion check. “Ain’t no way, the track’s closed,” replied the diminutive mechanic, who peppers his racing talk with such phrases as, “Sing it like a bumblebee in a jug.” Bart was determined.

The second annual Mint 400 proved again that the motorcycle is the fastest off-road machine, but, reading the press releases from the hotel, one would think that the illustrious stars of automobile racing were the winners.

IN THE COMPANY of big bike tourists, there is a certain thrill in blurting out that you out-distanced their grandest tours to date on a mere 250. To the tune of angry “Oh yeah’s?” and catcalls you seat yourself astride your mudcoated, somewhat battered “midget” and bravely set about a verbal justification of the feat, beginning with a contrite, “Well, if I’d had the money, I’d have gotten a bigger one,” and ending with uncalled-for comparisons to the heroic exploits of Lewis and Clark.

ERIC HAVILL
IT WAS SO beautiful that it may never happen again. They were going to throw it again this June, but now it’s been “put off.” Something about the City Fathers being a little up-tight. And certain other officials may still be grumbling about how they got away with closing down part of U.S.

Now that there are three Threes on the market—Triumph, BSA and Kawasaki—each brand is seeking to publicize its long-leggedness. Both BSA and Triumph, therefore, are separately throwing in $25,000 each as contingency money during Speed Week at the Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah, which runs Aug. 16 through 23.

Once in a while, you pick up a book, start reading it and find that you can’t put it down until you’ve reached the end. You carry it everywhere with you,to the head, in a lineup, on the bus. Every chance you get, you open it up and greedily devour the contents.

The European trials championship will not be decided until August, when the final round is held in Sweden. Don Smith (250 Montesa) and Dennis Jones (128 Suzuki) will play it for everything; mud will favor the former and rocks, the latter. At the British round, held over two laps of a 25-mile course on a bitterly cold day, Smith set the pace first time 'round to lead the field by three marks.

CARLO PERELLI
Oh, mighty power of Italian race organizers! With their impressive financial resources, they have succeeded in luring Mike Hailwood out of retirement! For the season opener at Rimini, after some bargaining, the fabulous sum of $6000 was agreed upon, but then, a lack of suitable mounts thwarted the plan.
