JOHN DUNN
In the near future (next summer), I plan to build a 100-cc road bike, either from various parts, or by modification of a new bike. The answer needed is to this question: “Would it be cheaper to scratch build or modify?” I have listed below what I hope to have as the end result: Engine, 12-14 bhp, including tune-up kits: frame, stock, Yetman or Van Tech; fork, stock, Ceriani. Telesco; rear suspension, stock Ceriani, Girling; wheels, stock, Akront Alloy 2.50-18 front, 3.00-18 rear; brakes, Honda 160 front, stock rear; tires, Avon; bars, flat drag type; tank, 250-mile range minimum; speed, 65-70 mph cruising, 75 top; weight, 170-190 lb. wet, rear set pegs; instruments, speedometer, ammeter, tachometer, oil temperature gauge; and cost, $500-$550.

After reading “The Scene” (CW, Feb. ’69), I got an impulse to write to you. First of all, I would like to criticize the AMA because it has done very little for the American motorcyclist, in general, and especially the racer. As long as it’s been in existence, it’s accomplished the least of any organization I know of.

I am a fighting man in the Republic of Viet Nam. I often wonder what I am fighting for. I started riding two wheels when I was 14. My first bike was a Vespa. Now, seven years later, I own a Triumph Bonnie, and the only reason I don’t have it with me now is because I couldn’t get it in my duffel bag.

KAWASAKI’S NEW 500 has got to be the kinkiest street bike ever! It’ll raise the hairs on the back of a rider’s neck, or turn them grey in 13 seconds flat. At top speed, it will run faster than the Osaka Express. It will trounce any mass production motorcycle that comes in full street trim, regardless of displacement.

JUST BECAUSE Berquist and Preston won the Baja run on one doesn’t mean that a rider can buy a CL350 and expect to do any honest scrambling. Honda’s all-new electric starting scrambler is really a dirt styled street bike, sprung taut as a banjo string, geared low, and destined for innocuous battles in bellbottom, spurting mod-ly from Gazarri’s to “Whiskey” and back through the neon night.

RELIABILITY can be a dowdy sort of word, but in Zundapp’s case, it is exciting. What makes it so is the way these feisty motorcycles from Germany brave rain-sleet-snow-mud adversity to carry their riders, and American ones like Dave Ekins, to international victories.

ANTI-RUST SPRAY
$2.25
Rust is a persistent and creeping menace to any machine, but the motorcycle is a particularly vulnerable target. It is virtually impossible to keep a machine totally dry all the time, and there are areas of a bike that simply cannot be reached by any method other than an aerosol spray. The Anti-Rust mist will form a protective, colorless shield on parts exposed to rust and corrosion. The manufacturer claims that Anti-Rust displaces moisture, i.e., the protective film slips between the moisture and the metal. This means that the motorcycle can be sprayed while it is still wet. A handy-dandy helpful household hint: tape an aerosol can (under the seat, to the frame, etc.) to the machine. Then, if caught in a shower, the bike can be sprayed without delay. The Ashland Chemical Company, Industrial Chemicals and Solvents Division, Dept. CW-4, 10505 South Painter Ave., Santa Fe Springs, CA 90670, will answer questions. A 16-oz. can retails for $2.25.

POCKET COMPUTER
$3
Paul Dunstall, fount of countless bike goodies, offers a new product which is verrrrry interesting. It is a gear ratio and speed computer which should do away with gearing and speed guesswork. It comes with detailed instructions and is easy to use. With the computer wheel the rider can calculate the gear ratio of his motorcycle from sprocket sizes, his bike’s speed at any combination of gear ratios and rpm, and determine the gearing necessary to achieve a required speed. This item can also calculate normal mathematical equations by using it as a circular slide rule. The handy, pocket-size, computer is made of durable white plastic and comes in a transparent plastic wallet. Price is $3, including airmail costs from Paul Dunstall Motorcycles, Dept. CW-4, 156 Well Hall Road, London, S.E. 9, England.

Special name orders for clubs and teams can be obtained for $1 more apiece with a minimum order of 12. The Papoose may be ordered direct for $4.95 postpaid from Lynx Industries, Dept. BMW CUSTOM EXHAUST
$200
From Germany comes a new, custom exhaust system for all late model BMWs. The chrome-plated exhaust pipes are easy to install and provide the same low noise level as the original equipment. The maker claims that this upswept unit is not so susceptible to dings and scratches as the original equipment. This is good news for the rider who has to travel poorly paved or dirt roads. To protect the rider’s legs there is a sturdy and attractive heat shield. The system comes complete for $200 and can be ordered through all BMW dealers. For further information, contact Butler & Smith, Inc., Dept. CW-4, 160 W. 83rd. St., New York, NY 10024.

MOUNTAIN DUCK
$119.95
The new Duck trail minibike features a 9-cu. in., 3.5-bhp, Tecumseh four-stroke engine, automatic centrifugal clutch, U.S. Forestry-approved spark arrestor, and a price of $169.95, fully assembled. The bike is also available in kit form for $159.95. Two hours are needed to assemble the kit. An 80-tooth rear sprocket is used to provide the bike with considerable agility in the backwoods. The maker says it will climb a grade of 45 percent, and carry a load of up to 250 lb. in normal use. Maximum speed is limited to 15 mph under these conditions, but can be raised to 30 mph by the use of alternative gearing. Other specifications include 37.5-in. wheelbase, 72-lb. weight, jig-welded steel frame, steel wheels with sealed-for-life ball bearings, foot operated brake, 2-qt. fuel tank, automatic recoil starter, magneto ignition, and polyurethane air cleaner. Twenty-five cents buys full information on the machine from its maker, Bird Engineering, Dept. CW-4, P.O. Box 427, DTS, Omaha, NB 68101. Bird also manufactures Wren minibikes, costing $119.95 in basic form, or $139.95 in deluxe form, complete with headlight, taillight, generator, and front and rear fenders. Both versions feature a 2.5-bhp, four-stroke engine, and maximum speeds of more than 25 mph.

CHENEY SPECIALTIES
$52
Eric Cheney, an unorthodox and ingenious constructor of motocross machines, recently has produced a line of lightweight equipment for trials bikes. From his shop in Hampshire, England, Cheney offers a specialized conversion for Ceriani or REH front forks, and superlight front and rear hubs. On all three components, he saves weight by using elektron in place of the standard materials. Cheney’s fork comprises elektron sliders, and stanchions of light gauge, extra high tensile steel. The unit is claimed to save 3 lb. over an REH or Ceriani fork. The Cheney hubs are designed to exclude mud and water, and feature sealed bearings. Diameter of the front hub is 5.5 in. It is claimed to be 4 lb. lighter than a full-width Motoloy hub. Clearly, use of all three Cheney parts would pare more than 10 lb. from the weight of most trials bikes. In England, the fork conversion is priced at approximately $60, the front hub at $52, and the rear hub at $64. Full details on prices to American buyers are available from Kosman Specialties, Dept. CW-4, 275 Station Ave., Daly City, CA 94014.

BENELLI
Benelli’s line for 1969 is headed by an attractive 650-cc road machine called the Tornado. It appears compact for a 650, and Benelli claims a weight of only 385 lb. The engine is a dual carburetored ohv Twin with five-speed gearbox. Claimed top speed is 120 mph. The Benelli line also includes the Dynamo Scrambler, a small two-stroke trail machine that can be stowed in a car trunk, and the 250-cc five-speed El Diablo, a multi-purpose tourer. In the 125-cc class comes the Cobra Scrambler, with dual rear sprocket and four-speed engine. U.S. distributor for Benelli is Cosmopolitan Motors, Inc., Dept. CW-4, 5521 Wayne Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19144.

The unit sells for $6.95 and is available at motorcycle dealers everywhere.

CW-4, 218 Main St., Venice, CA 90291, offers a new engine cleaner formulated specifically for motorcycles. Aermacchi Harley-Davidson, which already deserves much gratitude for building the fastest production pushrod racers in the world (the 250 and 350 Golden Wings), has done the privateer another great service. Aermacchi has started production on a graceful and robust 125-cc racer, also called the Golden Wing.
