Anglo-American relations were cemented even more firmly a while back when my friends, the Rickman Brothers, builders of the Rickman Metisses in England, again were on the West Coast. They raced a little, at the Dirt Diggers Grand Prix and a couple of desert events, and generally showed motorcyclists in southern California what nice guys they are.

For the past couple of years now, I've been reading CYCLE WORLD and think it is really the greatest! While I was in the service, I always looked forward to my buddies' issue to arrive each month. Of course we had Playboy and a few other magazines to read, but CYCLE WORLD really grew on me.

I am the owner of a Honda Super Hawk and there are a few questions I would like to ask. First, in the past month I have gone through two inner tubes on the rear wheel. It appears that the tire is slipping on the rim because the valve stems were torn off on both.

I am mad, boiling mad, at some of the letters in your magazine from cycle riders. And yet they have no backbone to stand up for their rights and speak their piece about these unfair laws. I can’t understand why they just want to sit back and watch lawmakers take the fun out of cycle riding and to watch the sport go down the drain.

Copies of my letter were distributed at the first meeting of the Competition Congress, along with a similar letter from Bob Hicks, publisher of Cycle Sport.

GREAT DAY
Bikes And Ballplayers At Gun Lake
[no value]
[no value]
[no value]
GREAT DAY! It WAS a great day—in the Michigan woods. Invited to ride the sandy, pine, oak and maple hills surrounding Gun Lake, near Grand Rapids, were all the staffers of Kawasaki Midwest of that city, a pair of 1968 World Series winners from the Detroit Tigers baseball team, and CYCLE WORLD. Dave Mehney, proprietor of Kawasaki Midwest, issued the invitation (1) to ride Kawasaki motorcycles in the luxurious scenic beauty of western Michigan, and (2) to meet the winning pitcher of three World Series games, Mickey Lolich, and his standout center fielder teammate, Mickey Stanley, both of whom are enthusiastic motorcycle rider/owners.

AMERICA HAS just devoured its second helping of European motocross—with enough relish to make the newly instituted Inter-Am series a flourishing annual event. This year’s eight-round Inter-Am has been an unqualified success with larger crowds attending, keener racing and a marked increase in the standard of riding by American competition.

A SAD THING has happened to the motorcycle industry; the day of the annual facelift has arrived, and, still worse, has become firmly established in the U.S. Most of the major factories by early winter already have begun to announce "new" ranges of machinery, accompanied by launch receptions for the motorcycle press, and lavish distribution of expensively produced literature.

Participants came from all walks of life—farmers, prospectors, members of religious move ments, businessmen, housewives, badmen, soldiers and speculators.

FORK
$39.95
Roehr Bros.’ forks for lightweight trail bikes incorporate an exclusively designed two-way damping control valve that regulates damping action on both up and down strokes. This special metering valve utilizes new hydraulic principles that limit the flow of oil to precisely the amount needed. Foaming and hydraulic lock are completely eliminated, says the maker. The forks are fully manufactured by Roehr Bros., and feature longer than standard legs, for increased ground clearance and a longer wheelbase. The legs are chromed for their full length. Progressively wound springs are employed, and 5.25 in. of fork travel is available. Priced at $39.95 per set, the fork fits Bridgestone 90s and 100s, Kawasaki’s 85-, 100-, and 120-cc models, Suzuki 80s and 100s, Yamaha 80s and 100-cc Singles and Twins, 90and 100-cc Hodakas, and Honda’s S-90 and CL-90 machines. Roehr Bros. are located at Dept. CW-2, 317 N. Victory Blvd., Burbank, CA 91502.

UNIQUE BRAKE
$70
Wal Phillips, famous for the fuel injectors used by many British speedway and drag competitors, has introduced a unique, new disc brake. While conventional disc brakes utilize a disc attached to the hub, Phillips’ design features a disc rivetted to the wheel rim. The advantage in this system is that the brake can exert considerably greater leverage. When a Phillips-equipped 650-cc Triumph was tested by an English motorcycle newspaper, a brake efficiency meter recorded figures that the testers never before had achieved. The meter, which read only to 1 G deceleration, produced readings estimated at 1.15 G, when bolted to the Triumph. The previous “record” was 0.75 G, established by a BMW. The cable-operated Phillips brake also is claimed to offer great sensitivity of operation. The caliper is anchored to the fork leg, and brake pads from MG Midget cars are used. Insulating washers between the disc and the wheel rim prevent heat conduction to the tire. A number of saw cuts in the disc solve the problem of expansion. Prices for the brake start at approximately $70. Wal Phillips Ltd., Dept. CW-2, 116A New Kent Rd., London SE1, England, will supply full details.

PRECISION PUSHRODS
$17.95
A new, high quality, lightweight pushrod for Triumph 650 Twins is offered by Precision Machining, the maker of cams and competition accessories for Honda and Triumph. The pushrods, supplied in sets of four at $17.95 per set, are made of 2024-T4 alloy tubing. They are stronger and lighter than pushrods of conventional material to better meet the reciprocating stresses of hard, high rpm use. The pushrod ends are made of heattreated 4140. The tubes are completely ground in a quality finish. Precision Machining claims that its product is 0.18 oz. lighter than competition products of comparable price. Precision Machining, Dept. HODAKA SS
$575
Riders who want a complete racekitted 100-cc machine, without modifying a standard trail bike themselves, may purchase Steen’s Hodaka SS, which incorporates improvements to suspension, engine, tires, protection and filtering components. The SS is built from brand new machines, which are uncrated and stripped. Ceriani suspension units are fitted front and rear, and the frames are painted a metallic silver enamel, which is baked for durability. The wheels are fitted with 3.50-in. section studded tires, held by security rim locks. The Ceriani front fork offers 5.5 in. of travel, and is fitted with a steering damper, an aluminum number plate, and Rickman handlebars. The fuel tank is given a deep blue panel of paint, and standard handlebar grips are replaced with large, soft rubber components. An elevated rear frame section, and modified rear fender, permit full use of the rear suspension travel. Additional engine protection is gained by the use of a thick aluminum bash plate. A tuned expansion chamber exhaust system provides added power, while engine protection is gained from the installation of a large capacity air cleaner, with Filtron element. The bike is priced at $575, $150 more than a standard Hodaka. Steen’s, Inc., Dept. CW-2, 1635 W. Valley Blvd., Alhambra, CA 91803, has full details.
