Motorcycles and the feds played an important part in things this month. I received separate government publications, from two different federal agencies. The United States Department of Health, Education, and Welfare has issued a pamphlet entitled “Motorcycles in The United States.” It is primarily a publication designed to acquaint the non-motorcycling public with our sport.

I must say Amen! to the “Friendly Service” letter from J.F. Pellicciotti (CW, Aug. ’68) of Wayne, Pa. In July, 1966, my brother Herb and I traveled to Seattle, enjoyed some deep sea fishing and took in the Nationals at Castle Rock, Wash., then journeyed down the coast and took in the races at Ascot the following Saturday evening.

My small problem turned into a bill of over $100, and I want to try to do my best to prevent it from happening again, so I come to you for help, and suggestions/answers. I have a ’67 Honda CL160, and the left exhaust valve broke-completely off. It went right through the top of the piston, down into the crank.

I’m 21 years old, so I figure I’m an adult. I’ve been riding bikes since I was 16 years old, and have never had an accident. Here in Viet Nam, I’m unable to keep up with the Legislature and what it is trying to do. I agree there should be some form of protective measures taken, one being keeping your headlight on at all times.

A new level of honesty and accuracy was achieved when CYCLE WORLD started road testing motorcycles. Previously, the majority of motorcycle publications in the world relied on the manufacturers’ news releases for information, and printed pretty much what the manufacturer wanted written.

MOTORCYCLE engines are a temperamental lot, and they have some reason to be. Generally speaking, no other class of internal combustion engine produces as much power in relation to its size. With this comes something less than smooth, slow speed running or easy starting.

Exotic projects such as the Three are difficult to keep hidden, and indeed, on both sides of the Atlantic, the motorcycling press and many riders in the street long have known of the bike’s existence.

BOOM CONDITIONS that now vitalize the motorcycle industry are partly the result of a lot of people discovering that bikes are fun, and partly due to the subtle promotional efforts of the Japanese manufacturers. With skillful advertising, these factories made cruising the highways on a colorful, chromed motorcycle seem a great way to spend an afternoon.

Dirt track racing on the mile oval has its own sort of antique charm, harking back to days when such circuits encompassed acres. Or even whole towns. Now, thanks to overpopulation, only three National mile races a year are held. Hopefully, promoters will persevere.

HONDA’S NEW CL 175 could well be the all-purpose bike, the equivalent to the VW of the automotive realm. This little Twin fits the VW pattern because it is downright cute—as the small, friendly bug is cute. The 175 is low in cost (not the lowest), is powered by a small displacement engine (not the smallest), and, like its Germanic four-wheeled counterpart, is a masterpiece of design and engineering.

DIAMONDS IN DUPLICATE
$10.50
Combining a blend of 50 percent natural diamond and 50 percent manmade diamond, Covington Engineering Corp. blades are claimed to offer superior cutting powers and longer life than blades using one type of diamond only. Covington blades are available in two forms-Super Charged and Super Segmented. The rim of the former contains large notches which are filled with a mixture of the two types of diamond and brazing powder. The mixture is fused into the blade to insure maximum retention of diamond content. Prices of these blades start at $10.50 for a 4-in. by 0.01-in. size. The more expensive Super Segmented series starts at $17.10 for the 6-in. by 0.32-in. size. The blend of diamond and brazing powder is fused under high pressure in segment molds. The steel blade is then notched, and the long diamond segments are brazed into place, leaving 0.125 in. of steel support between each segment. Covington Engineering Corp., Dept. CW-10, P.O. Box 35, Redlands, CA 92373, has details of all blade sizes available.
Bonanza Industries Inc.
LIGHTEST AND CHEAPEST
$19.95
Avanti Sports, Dept. CW-10, 3613 W. Alabama, Houston, TX 77000, claims that its model 711 is the cheapest and lightest full coverage safety helmet available. The Avanti 711 costs only $19.95, and weighs less than 2 lb. It also exceeds the USASI Z90.1 helmet standard. Formed by an injection molding process, the helmet is color impregnated, and will not suffer from chipping, scratching, or fading, says its maker.

IGNITION BY GREGG
$64.60
Gregg Electronics, of Houston, Tex., offers a new capacitive discharge ignition system for use on motorcycles or cars with engines employing battery, distributor, and coil ignition equipment. The Gregg components are claimed to extend considerably spark plug and breaker point life, ease cold starting, and offer a high degree of reliability. Installation requires 5 min., and no re-wiring is needed. Gregg ignition systems build spark plug voltage to a maximum in 2 millionths of a second, and cut spark duration from 150 millionths to 15 millionths of a second. The maker also claims that the systems provide three times the normal plug voltage, and deliver consistent performance throughout the entire engine range. Prices start at $64.60. Gregg Electronics, Dept. CW-10, Brookhollow Business Park, 3925 Dacoma, Houston, TX 77018, has full specifications and prices.

RICKMAN GOODIES
$48
Steen’s Inc., importer of world-famous Rickman products, announces several new items from the specialist company, as well as modifications to several of the brothers’ existing exports. An optional, 1-in. longer swinging arm, for use on the Rickman frame, is now available at a cost of $48, including rubber bonded Silent-Bloc bushings. The longer arm enables wheelbase of a machine to be lengthened if desired. This modification may be particularly useful for the heavy rider, whose weight may tend to adversely affect a motorcycle’s point of balance. The optional swinging arm also may be included in a new Rickman frame. Realizing the difficulty the American rider may have in obtaining British nuts and bolts, the Rickmans now include in their frame kits all the fasteners needed for the Metisse components. The “Metisse Builder,” a book produced by the brothers, is available for $1. Another new offer is a set of German Magura control levers and English Rickman control cables as a package deal at $29.95. If bought separately, the parts would total $33.05, for a single carburetor machine. The set comprises Magura brake and control levers, Rickman clutch, front brake, and throttle cables, a scrambler twistgrip, and a left side handlebar grip. It is intended for 500-and 650-cc Triumph engines used in standard or Rickman chassis, and also is adaptable to other machines. Malleable aluminum Magura levers save as much as 30 percent of the weight of steel levers. Plastic adjuster capstans permit cable setting during riding, and weather and brush protectors are standard features. Finally, Steen’s now is selling Rickman Street Metisse frame kits (CW, July ’68), for adaptation to road-going machines. The kits are based on road racing versions, and include nickel-plated frame, which doubles as a 3-qt. oil tank, swinging arm, fiberglass fuel tank, combination seat panel and rear fender, swept-back exhaust pipes, and Dunstall mufflers. All nuts, bolts, clamps, and fuel and oil lines are included. The price is $597. Full information on all Rickman products is available from Steen’s Inc., Dept.CW-10, P.O.Box 2276, Alhambra, CA 91803.;

FOR TOUGH NUTS
$12.95
Fifty cents buys a catalog containing details of products marketed by the Aragon Distributing Co., Dept. CW-10, 223 W. Camino Real, Monrovia, CA 91016. A special screwdriver, costing $12.95, loosens difficult screws without ruining the heads. When the tool is hit with a hammer, a cam converts the blow to a twisting motion, and the sudden jar breaks the screw loose. The Ace fiberglass one-piece fuel tank and seat unit also incorporates an oil tank and a rear fender. Prices range from $99.95 to $129.95, and the unit fits any motorcycle. There are four sizes each for street and competition use. A special tire lever eliminates the danger of pinching the tube when a tire is changed. This is achieved by the design of the ends of the tool, which costs $4.95. A new rim jack removes dents from wheel rims, without the need for taking off tire and tube. The tool fits WM1, WM2, and WM3 rim sizes, and is suitable for use on alloy rims. The price is $22.49. Aragon also supplies Renold chain, Air Trip air filters, and numerous other products.
Bonanza Industries Inc.

High Performance Motorcycle Cams
Harry Weber, veteran manufacturer of speed equipment, is author of a new booklet, “High Performance Motorcycle Cams,” priced at 50 cents. Written in terms the layman can understand, the booklet deals with the problems facing the cam designer, and the compromises he must make in order to solve them. Cylinder breathing, valve duration, and cam profiles are all covered, and considerable attention is devoted to the art of “building up” a cam, rather than machining one from a solid billet of metal. Advice is given on choosing the correct cam to match the rider’s needs, and on the cam service that the Weber experts offer. The fully illustrated booklet is available from Weber Speed Equpiment, Dept. CW-10,310 S. Center St., Santa Ana, CA 92703.

American Jawa Ltd. announces the arrival of improved versions of the 250-and 350-cc Californian machines. Designated the Californian IIIb series, the new machines incorporate a 55-W, 6-V generating system, replacing the alternator and magneto used on previous machines. A 6-V, 7-ampere-hr. battery is housed in a compartment below the left side of the seat. The air intake system has been redesigned, and features a new holder located in a compartment under the tool box on the right side of the frame. A length of tubing, designed to improve low speed engine power, connects the filter to the engine. Engines have been tuned for maximum power at low and medium operating speeds. The 350-cc model produces 21 bhp at 4750 rpm, with 23.15 lb.-ft. of torque at 3750 rpm. A four-speed gearbox is used, and the factory claims a maximum speed of 81 mph. The 250 develops 16.5 bhp at 5000 rpm. Standard on the new machines, as on all Jawas of more than 125-cc displacement, is a semi-automatic clutch operating device. This is a cam mechanism which automatically releases the clutch as the gears are shifted, relieving the rider of the need to operate the clutch lever manually. Both 250-and 350-cc machines feature twin exhaust pipes, with high level silencers. Tires are 3.25-19 universal pattern. A motocross type handlebar is fitted. Fuel tank holds a generous 4 gal. Overall finish for the machines is black and bright red, with chrome trim. Port of entry prices are $569 for the 250, and $695 for the 350. Additional information on Jawa motorcycles is available from one of the following American Jawa offices: Dept. CW-9, 4753 Papineau Ave., Montreal 34, Quebec, Canada; Dept. CW-10,38-15 Greenpoint Ave., Long Island City, NY 11101; and Dept. CW-9, 1325 S. La Brea Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90019.

Production is well underway, at the Harley-Davidson Aermacchi works in Schiranna on the Lake Varese shores, of two new models now being introduced in the U.S., the 125-cc Scrambler and the 350-cc SS (Super Sprint). The Scrambler is derived from the earlier Rapido and therefore features an orthodox 56 by 50 mm bore and stroke, 123.15-cc two-stroke engine with flywheel magneto ignition on the left, helical gear primary drive on the right, four-speed gearbox in unit, and 24-mm carburetor with twin paper element air filter.

Will injury and visa trouble rob East German Paul Friedrichs of this year’s 500-cc motocross title? The two factors combined could stop him from becoming the first man ever to win the crown three years in succession. After having led the points table at six rounds, he was unable to obtain a visa to ride in the British round.
