My newest toy, if that’s the correct description for the latest addition to my motorcycle collection, is just off the work bench and ready to go. My friends, the Rickman Brothers, Metisse builders, prepared the latest model Mark V to receive the BSA Victor 500-cc Single.

IVAN J. WAGAR
MOTORCYCLE action to nearly all enthusiasts is a scrambles race, an enduro, a desert run, a hillclimb or a road race, invariably under sponsorship of a motorcycle club. Well and good! Action requires responsible sponsorship. It’s fairly obvious, through the penetrating power of hindsight, that too many motorcyclists have equated action with good times, friendly competition, and such activities as road runs and picnics.

My Honda CL 77 scrambler has four annoying characteristics which detract from its otherwise amiable nature. It exhibits wheel wobble at high speed, eats spark plugs, vibrates fiercely at certain speeds, and is terrifically hard to start in cold weather.

DAVID DIXON
AFTER WORKING 12 or 14 hours a day, seven days a week, since January, Jack Findlay finally put Daniele Fontana’s three-cylinder 500 on a racetrack. He wheeled the smartly finished Cardani Three out for the Spanish GP at Barcelona, but completed only a mile before the engine overheated, and he stopped, rather than risk damage.

A TEST RIDE on a new BMW reveals a strange and, to some, unwelcome sensation. The front wheel actually dips under braking! For years BMW owners have boasted of the way the Earles type front fork has enabled their bikes to remain level despite the weight transfer that occurs when a motorcycle’s brakes are used fiercely.

IF THE business had gone to pieces after 25 years, many manufacturers would be disturbed. Not so Bates Industries, Inc., of Long Beach, Calif. Bates is manufacturing more bits and pieces for motorcycles than ever before. In those days when motorcycles arrived from the factories with only solo seats, Bob Bates recognized the fact that boys and girls go together.

EACH GENERATION of motorcyclists creates its own “in” machines. Back in the 1920s, the legendary two-stroke Scott was the status symbol of the sporting clique. More recently, the BSA Gold Star became the bike to own. Today, products from the workshops of the Rickman brothers in Hampshire, England, are among the pacesetters of the world's motorcycle industry.

A PRICE of $480 would be fair for many used motorcycles; when this sum buys a brand new 250-cc class competition machine, that’s a bargain. This is the cost of the latest trials bike from the Cotton factory, and the good deal becomes even better when it is realized that Cotton has not skimped with the engine, frame, or other components to maintain the low price of the bike.

GEOFFREY WOOD
ITALY, more than any other country, is known for its motorscooters. In the movies, a photograph of Rome, or in a story about this sunbathed country, the motorscooter is an obvious feature in the Italian way of life. The name most often mentioned when scooters are discussed is Lambretta, and the story of this marque is a study of the post-war industrialization of Italy.

OI' P.T. couldn't have predicted the 108,000 paying customers who spun the turnstiles to view the 400 private entries—from super chopper to sleek streetster—and the 44 commercial entries from throughout the world, a number that makes CW's show the only truly international event of its kind in the U.S.

THE DEVELOPING trend in motorcycle racing is toward use of automobile powerplants. Until now, it has been the sidecar people who have made use of automobile engines; a car engine in a motorcycle frame hasn’t been tried for road racing. Drag racing, yes-as witness the Michigan Madman with his 5.3-liter Chevrolet powered two-wheeler-but road racing, no, until now.

HENRY A. WATTS
EVERY time I read a CYCLE WORLD Road Test and look over the specification sheet I find myself getting a bit lost. Here’s a 305 with 36.2 sq. in. of brake swept area. Is that good? Here’s a 750 with only 30 sq. in. Is that bad? Here’s a 650 that does the quarter mile in 15.4 sec. Is that fast?

JUST ONE word sums up the Kawasaki 120 C2TR. That word is guts. Kawasaki has engineered into this little trail bike an incredible degree of durability, strength, and power, to the point where it feels virtually indestructible. The greatest tribute that can be paid the test machine’s reliability is to record the way it was used as a patrol bike at Saddleback Park, the new motorcycle playground in Southern California.

Bridgestone 100
Production models of the new Bridgestone 100 Trail-Scrambler have arrived. Rockford Motors, Inc., U.S. importer-distributor, reports additional shipments will arrive weekly to meet the rising demand for off-road motorcycles. The Trail-Scrambler features a welded tubular steel frame, which is a major departure from the pressed steel frames of earlier Bridgestone Singles. The machine is powered by the Bridgestone 100-cc rotary valve two-stroke engine which develops 11 bhp at 7500 rpm. This powerplant uses the Bridgestone aluminum alloy, chrome bore cylinder and oil injection. Rockford Motors reports that initial dealer deliveries must be allocated as demand for the 100 Trail-Scrambler presently exceeds the supply. C. L. Emery, Rockford Motors president, said, “This new Bridgestone is the newest in a succession of models specifically developed for the U.S. market. A strong consumer demand is indicated.”

racing oil
Among the wide range of performance and specialized products made by Bardahl are Bardahl racing oil and Bardahl VBA twostroke oil. The racing oil was developed to meet the needs of the company’s own racing machines. It has been extensively tested in racing motorcycles, cars, and boats, and is used in the national champion hydroplace, Miss Bardahl. Its maker claims a high natural viscosity, great temperature stability and film strength, and anti-foam qualities. It is available in quarts, gallons, and bulk quantities. VBA two-stroke oils are offered in two forms-one for machines with separate oil tanks, and another for machines lubricated by the oil-in-fuel system. Bardahl chemists worked with the engineers of several motorcycle factories during development of the oils. The company claims that VBA oils keep engines clearer, prevent seizures, lessen spark plug whiskering, and increase the life of chains and sprockets. Bardahl’s headquarters are at Dept. CW-7, 1400 N.W. 52nd, Seattle, WA 98100.

The 1968 world championship series in road racing and motocross competition are under way. At Nurburgring, it was a West German Grand Prix win for Helmut Path and his homebuilt four-cylinder URS machine. However, this meeting presaged a less lively season with works Hondas and Suzukis withdrawn from racing, leaving only Hans-Georg Anscheidt’s private Suzuki to contend with the factory Yamaha attack mounted by Phil Read and Bill Ivy.

Will Honda enter the two-stroke engine field? Probably, but in the expanding snowmobile market, not in the area of motorcycles. With Yamaha already firmly ensconced in the U.S. winter recreation vehicle market, Suzuki, Rabbit, Mitsubishi and Honda are investigating snowmobiles as a means to expand total production.
