LONG TIME READERS OF CYCLE WORLD no doubt will recognize the name B. R. Nicholls. B. R., or "Nick," became CW's first contributor when the magazine first got under way. He was well known in England before he ever wrote a word for "Continental Report," his regular venue on the good gray pages of CYCLE WORLD. He had long produced some of the best photography seen in England for the already established motorcycle publications in that country when we asked him to become the first regular columnist covering the world of motorcycles for us.

THE adjustable generalization, the bending of truth, lately has been applied by "experts" as evidence that motorcycles are inherently unsafe. Some of these flexings of reality have been employed to show that stopping capability of motorcycles is inferior to that of cars.

Fabulously detailed, perfectly duplicated, l/9th scale injection molded plastic kits of Europe's most famous multi-cylinder road racing Grand Prix motorcycles. Made in Italy by Tarquinio Provini. They are superbly finished and easy to assemble for the average model builder.

I am 17, and own a Honda CL 160. When 1 bought it two years ago, I knew almost nothing about motorcycles. But after subscribing to CYCLE WORLD for a year, my knowledge has been vastly improved. The Honda owner's handbook tells me nothing about minor tuning jobs on the engine, such as adjusting the valves and carburetors.

Concerning your test of the Yamaha DT-1, did you test two different models, one stock and one GYT kitted? The copy of the story centers around the stocker, but the pictures, except for the opening one, seem to emphasize a modified machine. Were there any differences in the front forks of the apparently two different machines tested?

THE HARLEY-DAVIDSON MOTORCYCLE per se seems more often than not the victim of unrestricted badmouth. Close acquaintance with an H-D XLH Sportster for the purposes of gathering data for this road test indicates much of this irrational invective is based on ignorance, bad judgment and, more likely, pure jealousy.

IT'S BEEN ALMOST THREE YEARS since the in-crowd was given a sneak preview of the all-new 360 Bultaco prototype engine. For a long time, many thought they'd never actually see or hear this giant perform. The first long look revealed meaty chunks showing through the early cutaway display unit, the super-sized bearings and giant clutch, the fat cases, and great squat appearance.

WHY DO MORE THAN 10,000 motorcyclists slither and skid to Germany's Nurburgring race circuit through the snow and blizzards of an European winter? There is no simple answer. It's the magic of the "Elephant Rally," a unique, yearly gathering of riders from all over the globe.

ABOUT TWO YEARS AGO, Frank Conners, who now is the head of Ossa West, phoned CYCLE WORLD to buy the rights to use a small stylized American flag which had appeared in a previous issue. Naturally CW was very curious as to the reason, but he would not disclose why he was in such a dither about something the magazine considered almost insignificant.

I have been following the motorcycle safety debate since I bought my first helmet, the day before I bought my first bike. In these three years, one very important fact has come to my attention: the lack of research in finding out why a person does not use the protective devices that are available.

GIUSEPPE PATTONI, designer and builder of successful Paton GP twins, after years of thought has decided to produce a dozen of his machines in 350 and 500 versions during 1968. Assembly now is well under way. The 1968 Patons are much improved over earlier models.

B. R. NICHOLLS
AFTER EIGHT WEEKS of virtual stagnation, an apparent check in the hoof and mouth epidemic has enabled the sport to pull itself up by the bootlaces and slowly get to its feet again. Initial meetings were attended only by riders who lived outside infected areas, and the ace among these was Vic Eastwood, BSA. But last weekend all riders who had scored in the first 750 Grandstand trophy meeting almost three months ago, plus Dave Bickers who was across the pond at the time, turned out to battle on a tricky little circuit in Suffolk.

THE 10 MILLIONTH HONDA motorcycle recently rolled off an assembly line of the company's plant at Hamamatsu. Aboard the machine, a 450-cc Super Sports, with fivespeed transmission, was none other than Soichiro Honda himself, wearing his usual white shop coat, green and white cap and a very broad grin.
