MOTORCYCLE safety is a legislative/governmental football that gets kicked around more by people who don't ride motorcycles than by people who do. Therefore, it is refreshing, if not downright stimulating, to encounter some views on motorcycle safety put down on paper by one who not only rides motorcycles, but who teaches others to ride.

I have a 1967 CB 450 which has gone only 2800 miles. I have a very troublesome set of carburetors which have not functioned properly since I bought the bike. Unfortunately there is not one Honda dealer that I know of that can or will service the 450.

Way back in 1955, I was studying in Mexico City, and racing CZs up and down the beautiful countryside. One Sunday at Avandaro, I witnessed a sight that I still remember as clearly as that beautiful Mexican day. Down a cobblestone street, rushing ahead of a pack of BSAs, Triumphs and assorted machinery such as TWNs and Jovos Horex, to the thrill of the Mexican peasants, screamed a red flash of motorcycle.

Fellow cyclists and countrymen, lend me your ears. During the early stages of our nationhood, the British started levying laws upon the settlers. So what did we do? We retaliated and took immediate action before it was too late. Right now, lawmakers, non-motorcyclists, are passing laws against us, not for us.

A SMOOTH RUSTLING WHISTLE, the quick tearing of thick silk, announces arrival of Count Domenico Agusta's 600-cc Four. This fascinating sound, an exciting whisper-pitched portent of power, comes as a surprise to those who recall the thunderous MV Agusta machines of the Grand Prix circuit, the championship roadburners of Hailwood, Agostini and Surtees.

IT DIDN'T TAKE THE JAPANESE very long to lead the world in the road racing game, and now it appears as though they might do the same in motocross racing. Japanese scramblers have, in the past, been something of a joke. Too heavy, power in the wrong place, and atrocious handling are criticisms that have applied to nearly every motocrosser out of the Far East.

THE PAST YEAR has been the most exciting one motorcycling has seen. Previous years' record books are of little use other than for fireside reminiscences. Manufacturers have introduced one thrilling model after another this year, and the specialized machine has been given the interested concern it deserves.

INHERENT VIBRATION of motorcycles makes them especially prone to loosening of nuts and bolts — unless suitable precautions are taken. Motorcycles have critical places where a nut coming off or a bolt falling out can lead to serious consequences.

NOW AND AGAIN, CYCLE WORLD goes off on a tangent. This particular tangent runs on rubberized caterpillar treads and skiis, instead of the sacrosanct two wheels. This tangential product report-snow test is about snowmobiles. Of course with that revelation, it might be charged that CYCLE WORLD has gone too far, has completely escaped the sphere of motorcycles.

NEW MODELS & PRODUCTS

Birmingham Small Arms Co.
[no value]
Birmingham Small Arms Co.
Royal Star 500
Birmingham Small Arms Co., Ltd., offers eight models for 1968, three lightweights, a mid-range 500, and four versions of the popular 650. The BSA story for the new model year, however, lies in technical refinements. BSA offers an 8-in. diameter twin leading shoe full-width hub brake, braking force of which increases in direct proportion to lever pressure applied by the rider. This brake is available on ultra-high performance models for '68. Another BSA technical improvement is a new contact breaker point assembly which provides for quick, accurate, independent timing of each cylinder. A third feature, found in the 441 Victor Special and 650 Firebird Scrambler, is a capacitor discharge ignition system which permits quick removal of lighting and battery equipment for rough sporting or competitive events. The BSA line includes the Starfire 250 lightweight, which offers practicality and economy; the 441 Victor Special, which incorporates a new square barrel cylinder and the high-efficiency brake; the 441 Shooting Star, with full trim and lighting equipment for street and road riding; the Royal Star 500, which incorporates all 1968 technical refinements, and which is designed for road touring; the 650 Lightning, with new brakes and ignition system, twin Amal concentric carburetors, and new styling of taillight, side reflectors and fuel tank; the Spitfire Mark IV, BSA's 650 road/sports model; the Firebird Scrambler 650, with 12-V electrics, scrambles exhaust pipes, 10:1 compression ratio, and separate instruments; and the Thunderbolt 650, especially for high speed touring. Additional information on technical improvements and the eight machines is available through either BSA, Inc., Dept. CW-3, 639 Passaic Ave., Nutley 10, N.J., or BSA Motorcycles Western, Dept. CW-3 P.O. Box 337, 2745 E. Huntington Drive, Duarte, Calif.
Birmingham Small Arms Co.
M-65
Harley-Davidson has incorporated new safety features into its M-65 and M-65 Sport models for 1968. These include full magneto system front and rear lighting, dual shoe brakes, welded tubular steel frames, and 2.50 x 17-in. wheels, with ball bearing hubs. Both models are powered by 65-cc two cycle engines, with 9:1 compression ratio. Other features are multiple plate wet clutch, helical gear primary drive, and three-speed gearbox — hand shifted with the M-65, foot-shifted with the M-65 Sport. The Sport model is 0.4 in. longer, at 44.8 in., than the standard unit, and is 3 lb. heavier at 119 lb. The machines are on display in H-D dealer showrooms.

$32.95
Columbia Engineering, Dept. CW-3, 2105 E. 37th St., Los Angeles, CA 90058, long-time supplier of high performance equipment for Honda 160 engines, now offers a cam/sleeve/piston assembly for Honda 90s. The billet camshaft ($32.95) is made of triple heat-treated alloy steel. The sleeve ($12.95) is precision bored and honed. And, the piston ($21.95), supplied with pin, produces 10.5:1 compression, but requires no machining for valve or spark plug clearance.

Yankee Motor Corp., Dept. CW-3, P.O. Box 36, Schenectady, NY 12301, will send (for 25i to cover handling costs), a threepart reflectorized helmet tape for safe night riding. The tapes, with Full-Bore racing oil emblems, black arrow and red dot, provide 4 sq. in. of reflective area. And, the tapes meet helmet reflector legislation requirements in the majority of states where such has been enacted.

Copaslip
$1.70
"Copaslip," a high/low temperature antiseize assembly compound, is a product newly imported to the U.S. The squeeze tubed material is compounded of metallic lead and copper particles in a grease base, and contains rust and corrosion inhibitors. In use, copper and lead particles form a smooth matrix which fills surface irregularities and prevents leaks. The film will not become soft or harden under temperature extremes; and will not wash away. Applications are to studs, nuts, setscrews, expansion joints, flange joints, head gaskets and wherever a tight seal and subsequent ease in disassembly is required. A 3-oz. tube of Copaslip is retailed at $1.70. Special prices are made to dealers, whole salers and distributors. Sole importer in the U.S. for Copaslip is Export Import, Dept. CW-3, P.O. Box 577, Savage, MN 55378.
Birmingham Small Arms Co.
Firebox
$39.95
A capacitive discharge (CD) ignition system now is available for motorcycle engines which employs a battery/distributor/ coil ignition system. The unit, called "Firebox," is manufactured by ;Dynamic Development, Dept. CW-3, P.O. Box 2084-D, Pasadena CA 91105. The manufacturer claims the CD system delivers increased fuel mileage, cleaner spark plugs, longer points life, reduced misfires, less engine contamination, and quicker starts. The CD system can be installed in less than an hour, and is compatible with standard ignition. Electronically speaking, the CD system makes more current available to fire the spark plugs as engine rpm is increased. Energy is stored as voltage in a capacitor (condenser), rather than as a magnetic field in a coil. As energy is stored, the points on opening supply a trigger impulse to a silicon rectifier, which then switches the energy in the capacitor to the coil. The result is a rapidly rising voltage, accurately timed. The sharp hard impulse is useful in firing fouled, or wide-gapped plugs. Retail price of the "Firebox" CD system is $39.95.

Metal-Mag Polish
Parr of Arizona, Dept. CW-3, 4407 North 16th St., Phoenix, AZ 85016, offers a line of motorcycle garments in top grain imported glove leather. The shirt torso is unlined, but sleeves are lined in nylon tricot. Sleeves zip for snug fit. The shirt price is $42. The western styled leather jeans, with riveted back pockets, are priced at $44. Garments are available in black, saddle tan, chestnut brown or rough-out. Each garment is custom tailored. Thus when ordering the shirt, the buyer must supply dress shirt size, and chest and waist measurements for a precise fit. In ordering the jeans, waist, hip and inseam measurements must be given. Cragar Industries, the wheel people, offer something new, of interest to fastidious motorcyclists as well as to car nuts. It's Metal-Mag Polish, especially for aluminum, but equally effective on chromium, copper and stainless steel. A little Metal-Mag removes a lot of rust, corrosion and discoloration — and leaves a protective film.

IMPORT OF RAW MATERIALS and foodstuffs, export of hard goods to create buying power is Japan's way of life. Export of motorcycles plays an increasingly important part in this economic system. Examination of export figures for two months late in 1967, for example, show that though the U. S. market is somewhat down, exports to Southeast Asia are on the rise.

THOUGH IT WAS ANNOUNCED at the 1965 Milan Show — together with the fabulous 600-cc Four tested elsewhere in this issue — MV's shapely 250-cc twin only now is going into a delivery schedule. Though the 600 Four received the lion's share of developmental attention during the past two years, the 250 was not neglected, and some important changes have been made both to the cycle components and the engine internals.

I FIRST MET HARRY at a race meeting in the North of England way back in 1938. We both were competing in the 500-cc event on machines bought more with an eye on price than performance. Harry was riding an old Rudge he had resurrected, and I had a Sunbeam long past its prime, but fettled up to attain speeds it was never designed for.
