Recently I visited a friend in western Mass. who had on his property a motorcycle which he was attempting to put into running condition. The machine was one which no one in that area or this seems to have heard of, hut for some reason I cannot explain, I feel I have heard of it before, and I think they went out of production around 1956.

REPORT FROM JAPAN

W. B. SWIM
HAS THE MOTORCYCLE boom ended? The Japanese manufacturers would make a fabulous offer to the man who could answer that question without a chance of being mistaken. Starting with a virgin market in transportation-short Japan not long after the end of World War II, production figures have climbed to previously undreamed-of heights.

With reference to the letter by Richard Brundage (August) concerning the Wikoff Engine Balancing article, I have a few comments: Sometimes the editor of CYCLE WORLD deserves to be attacked; but the intemperance displayed by Brundage against Wikoff is deplorable.

THE Motorcycle, Scooter & Allied Trades Association (MS&ATA) takes a really constructive step to assure industry uniformity in forthcoming safety recommendations to motorcycle manufacturers. It is MS&ATA opinion, and ours, that governmental bodies will adopt laws to regulate minimum standards for motorcycle and motorcycle equipment manufacturers; how much better it is for everyone, from the manufacturer to the rider, if knowledgeable people within our own group make suggestions toward the standards that should be met.

THE DIAMOND JUBILEE YEAR for the Isle of Man Tourist Trophy races was highlighted with shattered records, brilliant weather and the rebirth of production class racing —to give meaning once again to the term Tourist Trophy. Like most of the other thousands of spectators at the Isle of Man this year, we watched, scarcely believing, as Bill Smith and Tommy Robb rocketed around the 37¾ -mile island course on their 250cc Bultaco Metrallas at a pace that would have netted them sixth and seventh spots in the 750 class, or third and fourth places in the 500!

THROUGHOUT THEIR RECENT HISTORY, commencing about the time they started to seriously export their motorcycles to this country, Triumph's line included a model that seemed to be, in every way, something just for the American buyer. The model was the Thunderbird, christened long before Ford Motor Company's personal car was ever conceived.

"Dub" has kept us all ap prised each month of the machinations and products of Japan's motorcycle indus try, "scooping" at times even the Japanese home press to provide us with details of some new model or other, long before the U. S. distributors had any certain in formation.

SALINAS IS POLITELY referred to as an agricultural town, although in these days of demographic glut, it is more properly a city. Disregarding size, Salinas folk are horse and cattle people. So it was quite a departure from the norm when six years ago, certain sections of their rodeo arena/ horse track were rolled, scraped, and watered for a motorcycle IT scrambles.

AT LAST WE HAVE FOUND the motorcycle for people who hate motorcycles. Or, if you aren't rich enough to own a bar, you could sell out your collection of Bazooka baseball cards and model airplane engines, and, having saved up the required $249.50, buy a Roma and hide it from Mum by folding down the handlebars and shutting it in your toy chest.

WHEN DINOSAURS roamed the land, a deep, warm ocean flooded half a continent where mountains were yet to rise. Over millions of years the waters receded. First the Goshute Indians, then questing pioneers came through the passes of the young mountains to cross the glaring white salt deposits, the remnants of the prehistoric sea.

Roeder Wins On A Bumpy, Hard Luck Track
[no value]

DAN HUNT
EXPERT DEWAYNE KEETER commented A that San Jose's flat track would have been better if it had been bumpy and slow, or smooth and fast. Treacherously, the longish half-mile horse racing oval was both bumpy and fast. Everyone was getting into "conditions," as racing parlance has it.

Motorcycling Behind The Iron Curtain

CARLO PERELLI
THE 1967 FIM RALLY in mid-July in Moscow was, to my knowledge, the first time that West European motorcyclists were allowed into Russia. It was a splendid, not-to-be-missed opportunity to have a close look at motorcycling (and other things) in the iron curtain countries.

Sturgis, South Dakota, likes to call itself the motorcycle capital of the world. While that point may be disputed, and Sturgis be remembered better for the Black Hills on the Day of Reckoning, it must be admitted that they do get very busy one week each year with the Black Hills Motor Classic, held in conjunction with the famous AMA Gypsy Tour.

$25.50
We can't say that this lovely thing is fully protected with what she's wearing (or isn't wearing), but with that Cosmo helmet on, she'll stand less chance of getting her brains scrambled. The new model (helmet, not girl) is called the B-4, carries the approval of the AMA, Snell Foundation, SCCA, Z90.l, etc., and is claimed to be the lowest priced, approved, full coverage helmet on the market. It lists at $25.50.

AS SURELY as summer is followed by fall, so the sporting season draws slowly to its close. And, with the cool winds of late season, there comes a wind of change that strikes at the very foundations of the racing scene. In recent years, both Mobil and Esso have actively supported, then withdrawn from motorcycle activities.

BOOK REVIEW

Doubleday & Co., Inc.
[no value]
Doubleday & Co., Inc.
THE MOTORCYCLE BOOK
$1.95
IT IS A RARE occasion when one of the "really big" book publishers dips into the motorcycle field; when they do, books like this are exactly what one expects of them. It is general in the extreme, and deals with motorcycling from the absolute cold start. The author has obviously never seen CYCLE WORLD, but that's outside of the realm of good criticism.
JCP
Repeated attempts are made to dissuade the reader from feeling that he is really dealing with motorcycles, and some of the instruction in the how-to-ride chapters gives some questionable advice. On the whole, however, it is an excellent book for the novice rider and does fill a need.
