THE BAJA RUN has grown up, and in a big way. Figured if I kept talking about it long enough, someone would do something. Regular readers will remember the last episode, (CW, August), wherein our he-roes turned out to be driving four wheelers instead of bikes.

I have a 750cc Norton Atlas and have done considerable work on the engine. I am now running M-C pistons, 12:1 com-pression, and they are considerably heavier than stock, thus requiring an engine bal-ance job. Three different establishments have had a go at this task and I’m still being shaken to pieces on each run.

UNFORTUNATELY, many motorcyclists are under the impression that their ma-chines can stop as quickly as automobiles, but in most cases, this is not true. Light-weight sports machines can, under ideal conditions, approach braking distances of cars, if everything is in their favor.

THERE ARE A LARGE NUMBER of road riding Americans to whom it is nearly impossible to sell a mildly tuned machine, even though it may be all that they really need most of the time. Recognizing that fact, Kawasaki Aircraft Co., Ltd. came up with an “SS” version of their English style six-fifty vertical twin.

MIKE HAILWOOD MADE sure of the 350cc world championship with a win on the fast and dangerous road-circuit of Brno, where the Czechoslovakian Grand Prix has been held with world champion-ship status since 1965. Having won all five races of this class with the new Honda six, Mike leaves no chance for his closest rival, Giacomo Agostini and his MV-three, to accumulate enough points in the remain-ing four races to challenge the Honda equipe.

FOR YEARS, THE ENGLISH AND EUROPEAN manufacturers have had their own way in scrambles and motocross — understandably so because these are, after all, their games. Competition in the professional 250 and 500 Grand Prix series has become so keen that many of the factories across the Atlantic have undertaken monumental development programs to produce title-winning rough-ground mounts, and, with the nature of the sport being what it is, much of the effort has been directed toward chassis and suspension design.

GEORGE HAYS
THERE IS ADVENTURE in simply getting on your bike one fine morning and aim-lessly following your nose for a week or more. But almost any trip will be far more enjoyable if you give a little time and thought to planning your tour beforehand. It’s disappointing to learn when you return home that you passed within a few miles of some major point of interest or scenic attraction without knowing it was there, and a little planning can prevent blundering into the 120 degree August heat of the desert, or September’s first snow storm in the mountains.

THOUSANDS OF MOTORCYCLISTS, at one time or another, have envied the posi-tion held by the factory race boss, and where sporting activities play a large role in motorcycle sales, the job is especially glamorous. Besides being a member of the jet set for several months of each year, the race boss is invariably the center of attrac-tion wherever racing people gather.

THERE WERE 62 NATIONAL points and a purse totaling $8,100 on the line for the first running of the Portland Meadows AMA 20 miler, and every mile winner since 1962 was there to take the prize. There would be no cherry picking. Both Gary Nixon and George Roeder knew it.

IN THIS DAY AND AGE one hears constant-ly about the draft and the problems it creates. But older readers may recall that there was a period in the early forties when it didn’t really create a problem at all, because when your number came up, you just went where you were told without benefit of protests, marches, ceremonial card burnings, or even LSD. Having been born and raised in England, I got drafted there at the age of 18 in 1943.

Sure you do, and you probably recall also that each of the descriptions was in-correct and if they had been put together in a composite animal, it would have re-sembled lord knows what — certainly not an elephant.

INDIANAPOLIS, A NAME steeped in racing tradition, was the scene of the annual Floyd Clymer-promoted 110 mile AMA roadrace, formerly held at Des Moines, lowa. OH NO, ANOTHER METISSE in the pages of CYCLE WORLD ! This one’s the Mk IV Metisse frame, inhabited by a near-stock 500cc Triumph engine. The Mk IV frame is the next logical step from the IIIA mo-tocross frame. Intended primarily for smaller modern 500-class engines such as the Triumph twin or the BSA 441 single, the new frame boasts several improve-ments over the old one, some of them with the American rider in mind.

"Black Prince"
Accessory Distributors, Inc., or ADI, has been appointed the sole and exclusive distributors of the British line of Belstaff riding outfits, the most famous example being the "Trailmaster" two-piece suit, illus-trated here. To see a photograph of the real thing in action, of course, all you have to do is turn to a picture of Sammy Miller, who is usually in the process of winning something or other, splashing his way through the murky, gooky, slimy, wet conditions that make the wearing of such a suit necessary. They look very, very "motorcycling," and do the job, which is to keep you dry without being too heavy, and warm without being too hot. The Beistaff line also includes other mo torcycle garb, not all of it for competition or dirt. They have road riders' boots, light weight wind-tight trousers and jackets, rub ber "Black Prince" rain suits (road-tested in two years of riding through atrocious European weather by our Managing Edi tor, who swears by them), toggles and helmets. For a brochure, write ADI, Dept. CW, 602 W. 52nd St., New York, N. Y, 10019.

$19.95
A fairing designed to protect the rider from wind, mud and water off the road way is designed for Honda Dream and Benly series machines. It is die-cut from high-impact resistant plastic and comes with all mounting hard ware included; actually, "it" is a pair of fairings. Available in black only, they re tail for a suggested list price of $19.95 a set. Premier Seat & Accessory Company, Dept. CW, 524 Maple Avenue, Hamilton, Ohio 45011.

The Dyer Company. Box 4, Oberlin, Ohio, is marketing a dial reading micrometer for taking internal measurements. The instrument, which comes in 12 models, features direct dial readings in thousandths of an inch. The scissor action is designed to facilitate reading of internal dimensions, including offsets and grooves. Called the "Interest," the device is priced from $68 to $80. The smallest has a range from .2 inch to .6 inch; the largest from 4.0 inches to 4.8 inches. All are sold with a money-back guarantee.

air filter element
$4.95
Webco Inc. has a two-stage air filter element designed to replace the factory item on several machines including the BSA Victor, Bultaco Metisse, and Triumph Bonneville. A coarse outer stage catches normal particles and the second, finer in ner stage catches minute particles that many ordinary filters miss. The element is reusable, needing only to be washed in solvent, blown off and treated with a very light film of oil. It sells for $4.95 at many motorcycle dealer ships. Webco Inc., 218 Main Street, Venice, Calif.

NPG
NPG is a 100 percent synthetic lubri cant tailored for high temperature, racing conditions. As it is ash and carbon free, it should give a very good showing in twostroke engines where the oil is mixed and burned with the gasoline. The makers of NPG have sponsored some very successful riders, including Jim Odom, the hard charging rider who was the top professional novice in the AMA last year, using the sponsor's product, of course. NPG's rider this year is Carl Cranke. For further information, write NPG Lubricant, P.O. Box 272, Orange vale, Calif. 95662.

Pennsylvania crude oils
Two new motorcycle oils have been in troduced by the refiners of Amalie PRO Pennsylvania Racing Oil. They are pack aged as Amalie Four-Cycle and Amalie Two-Cycle Motorcycle Oil. Refined from 100 percent Pennsylvania crude oils, they have additives which help to reduce engine wear under high stress uses. The additives also reduce possibilities of engine seizure, according to the manufacturers. The twocycle oil is said to provide maximum per formance by mixing instantly and uni formly with gasoline.

NISONGER CATALOG
Nisonger Corporation, importer of KLG spark plugs and Smiths Instruments, gave us a look at their latest catalog. Partially illustrated, it lists the complete line of Smiths tachometers and speedometers for touring and racing use, as well as cables and gearing to match the instrument for nearly all major English motorcycles. The spark plug section of the book lists plugs of all types in 10, 12, 14 and 18mm sizes, as well as 1/2, 3/8, 7/16, and 3/4 inch reaches. Also included is a plug rec ommendation chart for 24 different brands of motorcycles, including major models, for pleasure and competition, of each brand. A very informative explanatory note tells about selecting the proper heat range for your machine, what to expect of spark plug life under different uses, how to prolong spark plug life (Did you know that magneto-sparked twins should have the plugs "rotated" to opposite cylinders every 3,000 miles to promote even elec trode wear?), and how tight one should fit a plug in the head. Nisonger lists two addresses: 125 Main St., New Rochelle, New York, and 5220 W. Jefferson, Los Angeles, Calif.

wheels and spare sprockets
Neil Keen, National No. 10, has been doing quite well on the Lund Cycle Sport Bultaco short tracker, having won several races at Sante Fe and other tracks, as well as generally being the fastest man on the course wherever he goes. He and Lund are manufacturing repli cas for sale to racers at what seems a very reasonable price. Utilizing the Pur Sang engine, the tracker will be delivered ready to-race with chrome moly frame, fiberglass tank, alloy wheels and spare sprockets. Anyone interested can get in touch with Neil at 2635 N. 22nd St., Decatur, Ill. 62526.

TORCO MC OIL
The Torco Oil Company, best known for racing lubricants, has added two new mo torcycle oils to their line. The first, for two-strokes, promises clean burning, little smoke, cleaner exhaust system and increas ed plug life over oils not specifically formulated for two-strokes, and is available in SAE grades 30, 40 and 50. The other oil is for - you guessed it - four-strokes and claims to offer high-temperature pro tection to rings, cams, pistons, and bear ings. Available in SAE grades 30, 40, 50 and 60, it is said to minimize carbon-sludge deposits and reduce gum and varnish build up. The retail price of the new oils is 95~ a quart, and it is also available in drum lots. A complete technical bulletin and ad ditional details can be obtained by writing to the manufacturer at 12247 Lakeland Rd., Dept. CW, Santa Fe Springs, Calif. 90670.

SUPERCHARGED MOTORCYCLES are Still quite rare in the U.S., but in the author’s home country, England, they are the backbone of the really fast competi-tion machines running in drags. Brierley has assembled an excellent technical volume covering the theory and practice of super-charging all types of cars and motorcycles.

B. R. NICHOLLS
JULY IS A QUIET MONTH for the road racers that stay in England. There is no really big meeting where the stars can be seen, although there are numerous small events that do not warrant mention in this column. Man of the month is without doubt Alf Hagon, for at last he has achieved his ambition to become the first British rider to break into the nine-second class for the quarter-mile standing start sprint.

"VALLI BERGAMASCHE" THE TOUGHEST OF THE TOUGH ONES

CARLO PERELLI
TO CELEBRATE its 20th anniversary, this year’s “Valli Bergamasche” had been made even tougher than in the past, and to further exhaust the 125 riders and ma-chines from nine countries there was a heat wave! With the knowledge that the “Bergamo Valleys” is the most difficult European trial, and, although the ISDT is longer, it’s easier, one has a faint idea of how bad this latest edition was.
