EUROPE IN JUNE has become for me one of those pleasant habits, a time when I can combine work and a little pleasure. The tiny, green island way up in the Irish Sea was again my goal for a starter — the Isle of Man, of course, and its fabulous TT motorcycle races.

BEING able to return to the Isle of Man as a journalist was indeed a pleasure. And getting out of bed at four in the morning was completely voluntary, with no thoughts of climbing into cold, soggy leathers that hadn't dried for a week. Also, there was the advantage of knowing most of what was happening.

I purchased a 1965 CA-77 Honda Dream this spring which had been spilled last year, resulting in the front wheel being tipped to the right side of the fork assembly and the handlebars broken on one side. I replaced the bars and removed the front wheel and leading links to check damage.

For the fourth time I take pen (type-writer) in hand, hopefully to be printed this time, on a matter concerning motorcycling and the law. I am a 22-year-old college senior majoring in political science. Aside from my motorcycling I have a great hobbyist interest in the Constitution of the United States and the Supreme Court, but I am far from an expert.

WHAT IS IT that brings crowds numbering in the thousands each year to the Isle of Man for the TT races? Enthusiasm can be the only answer to that question, though the reason is easy to see, for wherever one wanders in Douglas it is never far from a garage being used by a racer.

THIS YEAR'S 100-MILE AMA national championship road race must surely be the dampest hundred-miler in recent record. The weather for the weekend was a series of contradictions. Saturday dawned sunny, hot and humid; too hot, in fact, for comfortable road racing.

MANY WHO KEEP A CLOSE EYE on the sport of scrambles and motocross have speculated about the absence of a 500-class entry by a well-known factory with as great a potential as anyone for building a championship machine. The factory in question, of course, is Greeves, and their absence from the big class seems stranger still in light of their high degree of concentration in the scrambles sport which is, fundamentally, a British development.

IT HAS TAKEN QUITE AWHILE for the customizing craze to catch on in Britain, but now that it has caught on, it is very big business, indeed, across the pond. Last year, the sales of specialist firms involved in the customizing business exceeded $998,000, yet six years ago, there was no such thing as the "goodies trade," as the British call it.

IN OUR TRIALS ISSUE INTERVIEW (CYCLE WORLD, April, 1967), master path-picker Sammy Miller remarked that while a trail bike "would not necessarily make a good trials bike, a trials bike would be an exceptionally good trailer." And we couldn't agree more — particularly after having a go with the Greeves Ranger, a superbly modified — or should we say disguised — version of Greeves' brilliant Anglian trials machine.

IT Is A POPULAR misconception that all the first-rate drag machinery comes from California. The reasoning behind this is logical enough: more competition, a longer racing season, more interest. On September 11, 1966, however, at an all-bike drag meet held at Lions Drag Strip, the two most highly coveted awards were taken not by Californians, but by an obscure (at that time) Iowan named Leo Payne and by an even more obscure native of Hyattsville, Md., named Hubert E. ("Sonny") Routt.

BRILLIANT MIKE HAILWOOD made it another three-starts-three-wins-affair at this year's Dutch TT, held on the beautiful flat 4.8 miles circuit of Assen. Winning the 250, 350 and 500cc classes on his works Hondas — being led by MV rider Giacomo Agostini in the opening stages of the big bike event — Mike bettered the figure set by Jim Redman in 1964, who then had won the 125, 250, and 350cc races on the same make bikes.

AFTER HEIDELBURG RACEWAY was lost to the AMA national dirt track circuit when it was paved over, the national sanctioning body went scurrying to replace what had been one of the finest half-miles in the nation. As for beautiful layout, the AMA out-did itself in selecting the ultra-modern $13 million harness racing complex known as Louisville Downs, which is just down the road from the famed Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky.

FIRST OF A NEW WAVE of Montesas to debut in the United States is the 250 Trial, a competition machine specifically designed for the game of keeping the feet up artfully. While it reflects a serious attempt to produce an out of the box winner, we could not forget for a minute that it — like other good trialers we've tested — is a tremendously fun thing to have around even if you aren't serious.

THE ISLE OF MAN TT is sixty years old this year. To celebrate it several of CYCLE WORLD's friends in the motorcycle publishing business in England put together this volume. Included are a history of the Isle Of Man; studies of some of the heroes of the Island, such as Harold Daniel, Freddie Frith, Bob McIntyre, Stanley Woods, John Surtees and many others; and a review of some of the outstanding machines that have run there.

HAP JONES MOTORCYCLE TRAILER
Hap Jones Distributing Co., long-time motorcycle accessory empire, has recently added something new to their great line of goodies — a lightweight motorcycle trailer. Manufactured by one of the country's leading utility trailer builders, Holsclaw, the trailer is available with either two or three rails, which ease the loading chores by tilting, so that bikes can be rolled aboard without ramps or a great deal of muscle power. When the motorcycles are loaded, the carrier rails lock to the front frame cross member. The trailer comes equipped with tie-down chains, two tail-directional-stoplights, hydraulic shock absorbers, double safety chains and eight-inch demountable wheels. Inquiries should be directed to Hap Jones Distributing Co., Dept. CW, 2 Clinton Park, San Francisco, Calif., or 343 North Court, Prattville, Ala.

HIGH-COMPRESSION PISTONS
$43.95
Columbia Engineering, manufacturers of big-bore and stroker kits for Hondas, have added a new performance kit to their line, in the form of a high-compression piston set for the Honda 160. The kit includes a set of .120-inch oversize pistons, wrist pins, wrist pin keepers, head gasket and rings, and retails for $43.95. The Columbia line includes both big-bore and stroker kits for Honda 50, 55, 90 and 90S. Write to Columbia Engineering, Dept. CW, 2105 E. 37th St., Los Angeles, Calif. 90058, for detailed information and prices.

CHESTERFIELD STOPWATCH
$12.95
A must for the racer's tool kit or the spectator's pocket, the Chesterfield 1/10-second stopwatch features a Swiss-made antimagnetic movement, easily read dial, and large stop-start and reset buttons. The bright nickel-plated case has a large, sturdy carrying ring and a heavy-duty convex crystal. In addition, its jeweled movement is fully guaranteed. The usual deterrent to owning a stopwatch is cost, but at $12.95 the Chesterfield changes all that. Available, COD plus postage, from Ralph's Jewelry, Dept. CW, 11921 Inglewood Ave., Hawthorne, Calif.

CHRIS CYCLE MINI BIKE
$224.95
Like the big motorcycles, mini-bikes are also growing up. The little Chris Cycle, available in three models with 50cc and lOOcc Morini engines with three-speed gearboxes, has a double loop frame, telescopic suspension on both ends, kick starter, center stand, folding foot pegs and tuned exhaust. In addition, it is equipped with street-legal sealed-beam headlight, brake and taillight with on-off warning lights, and a front wheel brake. Speeds in excess of 40 mph are claimed for the Chris and prices start at $224.95. A descriptive brochure can be obtained by writing to Christensen Engineering, Dept. CW, 623 E. Los Angeles St., Monrovia, Calif.

BUTLER MIDDLEWEIGHT FAIRING
Quality Accessories has added number eleven to their line of imported Butler fairings, this one called the International. The International is designed and scaled for middleweight motorcycles — from 160 to 305cc — and its attractive and durable construction will certainly make touring a pleasure. The International is available in white, black, red, light blue, dark blue, yellow and tangerine. Complete information about an International for a specific make and model of motorcycle, along with price, can be obtained by contacting Quality Accessories Inc., Dept. CW, U. S. Route No. 1, Edison, N. J. 08817.

MICO SPORT SEAT
$229
Our sidecar issue (January, 1967) continues to generate interest and invite correspondence, and this month it was a letter, a brochure and some photos from Manufacturing Industries Co., telling us all about their Sport Seat, which is just that — a form-fitting fiberglass bucket seat on a steel frame. The handsome, petite sidecar has hinged mounts which permit the motorcycle, on which it is attached, to bank 30 degrees, both right and left. Despite its coil spring suspension and upholstery, the Sport Seat weighs only 38 pounds. It can be installed or removed from a motorcycle in a matter of minutes, and through the use of specific mounting bracket sets, will adapt to most motorcycles from 60cc and larger. (We find it difficult to visualize it tacked onto the side of an H-D Electra-Glide.) And for motorcycles for which brackets have not been designed, the MICO people will build to order. The suggested list price of the Sport Seat is $229, and such extras as a tonneau cover, windshield, luggage carriers and special upholstery are offered. For further information write Manufacturing Industries Co., Inc., Dept. CW, P.O. Box 1148, West Monroe, La.

LOCK WIRING FIXTURE
$19.89
There is no way of counting the races lost or Sunday rides spoiled by the loss of some strategic nut. This is not likely to occur, however, if everything is neatly safety wired; and if you've had trouble purchasing drilled nuts, you'll be happy to hear about a new drill fixture and kit that permits you to drill and wire the existing The fixture accommodates nuts from 1/2 to two inches (across flats) and holds them in secure alignment with a drill pilot hole while they are being drilled. We are told that you will probably break a couple of drills before you learn the technique, but it's of little consequence because the kit contains 12 1/16-inch industrial drills. The kit also contains 50 feet of stainless steel safety wire and a wire twisting tool. Basically a promotional item, the kit sells for a very reasonable $19.89 from the torque wrench concern of P. A. Sturtevant, Race Accessories Division, Dept. CW, Addison, I11. 60101.

OYLTITE STICK
$2.00
J. C. Whitney & Co. offer up a quick and inexpensive cure for oil and fuel leaks. The Oyltite Stik seals cracks, pinholes and seepage simply by being rubbed over the leak, and doesn't require that the system be drained. It will retain lubricating oil, fuel oil, vegetable oil, tar oil and gasoline, and is not affected by temperature changes. At $2.00, post paid, it's an attractive alternative to dismantling an engine or gear-box to replace seeping gaskets. Whitney's address is 1917 Archer Ave., Dept. CW, Chicago, Ill. 60616.

CARLO PERELLI
AERMACCHI-HARLEY DAVIDSON after long tests have started production in considerable quantities of a 125 two-stroke specifically designed for the U. S. market, but also available in Italy and all other countries later in the year.Light and inexpensive, the new model looks humble but its 56 x 50mm "over-square" engine churns out 10 bhp at the wheel at 6,750 rpm on 7.5:1 compression ratio, so one can easily expect "wheelies" during acceleration.

PRIDE OF PLACE this month must go to a fabulous piece of machinery that has arrived in this country from Milwaukee, to be raced in 1,000cc events by Lance Weil. It is the CYCLE WORLD motivated, Elite Motors-sponsored Harley-Davidson that seems set to give British fans a treat of real meaty, big, American V-twin racing.

THE TWENTY-FIRST RUNNING of the toughest motorcycle endurance run to be staged outside of Europe — the Greenhorn Enduro — indicated two, rather significant things to those who rode it; its name is most certainly a misnomer — better it should be called the Son-of-a-Gun Enduro, for that's what it was to ride — and it no longer need be qualified as the toughest in this country; it may well be the toughest anywhere.
