CYCLE WORLD is five years old with this issue. The phenomenon of a new magazine growing to these proportions in such a short time still amazes some. We now have several competitors who didn't even exist in our earlier days, many of whom apparently want to play "follow the leader." Evidently we have set an example, but I won't go into the buck-chasing aspects of some of CW's new rivals.

BEYOND any doubt, the highlight of my trip to Japan was a ride on a fullfledged, honest-to-goodness Grand Prix motorcycle. The machine was Ken Aroaka's mount for the Japanese GP, a 125cc Kawasaki. There is an uncanny feeling to riding a machine so small physically, but one that will see off just about any production racing 500cc single ever built.

I bought my first motorcycle three months ago (a Honda 305cc Scrambler). To put it short, it doesn't crank on like I would like it to. Can I install a Harman & Collins racing cam without rebuilding the whole thing and ending up with an unreliable piece of garbage?

In the November issue of your magazine appeared the editorial column "Round Up," by Mr. Parkhurst, in which he devoted space to the lighting requirements of the State of California. I am composing this with the hope that you feel your readers are entitled to a view of more facts concerning this situation than were presented by the official declaration of the California Highway Patrol.

YES; IT HAS BEEN AWHILE since we've tested a Harley roadster and our reason is simply that there is little point in performing an annual road test on a motorcycle that changes about as rapidly as a Volkswagen or, to hit the other end of the scale and a more apt analogy, RollsRoyce.

Litoverken, the company which won the world motocross championship in 1961 with Sten Lundin aboard, has been working on the new engine design for some two years.

THE CONCEPT, "street scrambler," may seem curious to some of our readers, who will conjure up the image of a rider in chinos and suede boots jumping curbstones in downtown Urbsville. Curious it is not, judging by the response of the buying public, who may show the greatest apathy for the most revolutionary of new models in street trim, only to snap up copies of essentially the same thing as soon as they appear with the veneer (if not all the characteristics) of a scrambler.

IF A MAN'S TRADE involves a tool, it stands to reason that he will want the very best tool available. And when that trade is professional motocross racing, it follows that the tool, a motorcycle, like any other tool, must be designed to perform its given task efficiently and consistently, without unduly fatiguing its operator.

UNLIKE MANUFACTURERS in most countries, the Japanese seldom wait for the annual show to release the new models. Usually new ideas or innovations are passed on to the consumer as soon as developed. Even in Japan, though, engineers start scratching their heads in early summer, hoping they will produce a "show stealer."

THE DEAFENING, almost invincible wail of four, five and six-cylinder Hondas. that has been part of the atmosphere at all the Grand Prix circuits this year, was not heard during the home ground Japanese GP. Although this was a disappointment for the spectators and meant effortless wins for the opposition, it was no surprise to anyone who follows GP racing.

IF EVER THERE WAS a machine that epitomized the American style and supremacy in building practical (and private enterprise) solutions to the problem of going faster quicker, it would have to be "Flustration." This deceptively simple looking double Triumph-engined record holder is more commonly known as the Murray & Cook dragster, although its most recent record was made at Bonneville, where it became the fastest unstreamlined motorcycle ever to have run on the salt.

RIDERS WHO WISH TO BUILD a 1,000cc sprinter in England, are faced with a very small choice of engines. Only vee-twin Vincent engines are really a tunable proposition, as the only other 1.000cc engine — that of the Square Four Ariel — simply flies apart at high revs, due to its inadequate bottom end.

Unless one has seen every nook and cranny of this country, one tends to stereotype racing in the West as an assemblage of desert-type events. We therefore recommend — to get the full picture — a cranny called Wilseyville, near which the Polkadots MC throws a championship hare scrambles.

B. R. NICHOLLS
FRITZ SCHEIDEGGER and John Robinson have at last been reinstated as winners of the Isle of Man sidecar TT after a successful appeal to the RAC. Readers will remember that having won the race by less than a second from Max Deubel, Fritz was disqualified for an alleged infringement of the fuel regulations, in that he used Esso and not Shell.

REPORT FROM ITALY

CARLO PERELLI
THERE IS NOTHING more difficult for the poor motorcycling journalist than getting facts and data about MV racing machines, which at the moment are Italy's most successful. One can know quite well the racing manager, the technicians, the mechanics, one can talk and laugh with them, but when it comes to the "point," their faces become suddenly serious and their mouths silent.
