Every big bike owner I've talked to recently has heard the old adage, "There's no substitute for cubic inches," and they all believe it. Ever since I started talking about buying a Suzuki X-6, I've been hearing statements like this: "A motorcycle usually isn't in the best state of tune all the time; with a big bike you can run out of tune and still have plenty of power.

LATEST photos of the 125cc Yamaha GP racer reveal an unusually complex seven-and-a-half cubic inch motorcycle. The results sheets indicate that the effort was well spent, for Bill Ivy has been a rather good match against the Honda fives, even though Taveri is almost certain to pick up the 125 crown for 1966.

STANDARDS, IN THE ABSOLUTE SENSE, don't change. Fast is fast; handling is handling; it stops well or it doesn't. What does change is the average rider's ability to recognize and make use of these standards. What also changes is technology's ability to stay abreast of public sophistication; and the former is usually a good indicator of the latter.

DRAG RACING might not be everyone's "cup-o'-tea" and after trying the real thing we can see why. The 10- to 12-second trip up the tarmac, on some occasions, can have all the excitement of a scramble, dirt track and road race rolled into one very short period of time.

THERE'S A PIECE of upsy-downsy woods area in Vermont where, once each year, the traditional calm that has inspired many a New England bard is broken by outdoor activity of a different nature. The Grafton Motocross is a strange thing, looked forward to all year long; for two days, its sounds rip through the trees like driving winds and then it is gone and the loam is left for another year to the silent workings of worms and poets.

THE FIRST DAY'S motoring took me about seventy-five miles outside of Barcelona. I had to stop because the rain was so heavy and the drops so big, they tore at my cheeks and splattered my goggles, limiting visibility to zero. Giving up the one-sided struggle against nature, I stopped at a roadside camp that advertised rooms for $1.00.

SAWDUST, PLASTER OF PARIS, and sewing machines may not seem to have much to do with the motorcycle industry, but nevertheless these commodities had a great deal to do with the early days of the German NSU concern. The story began way back in 1873, when two engineers, Christian Schmidt and Heinrich Stoll, joined forces to manufacture and repair sewing and knitting machines.

THE YEAR OF 1965 was monumental in the annals of record setting at the famed Bonneville Salt Flats. Huge jet-powered cars roared across the white expanse at over 600 mph; big supercharged Chrysler V-8 streamliners made 200 mph look puny; and even 175 mph was pegged back by unsupercharged 15 cubic inch motorcycles.

IT MEANS "LITTLE WOLF," in case you are wondering. What's more, it's every inch a Bultaco, and every bit as good as the rest of the practical machines coming out of Sr. Bulto's factory in Barcelona, Spain. Billed as a dual-purpose bike, a situation fraught with compromises at best, Bultaco's newest and littlest proved to be commendable on both the road and on trails.

CAROL SIMS
THE NIGHT BEFORE the running of the 50-lap National Championship TT at Ascot Park in Gardena, California, was suspenseful, indeed. Valuable National points and a $6,200 purse had lured 60 top-ranked AMA Experts from seven states to do battle, and over half of them were due for disappointment, Tonight's qualifications would narrow the field to 36, tomorrow night's heat races would eliminate all but the fastest 24.

THE WEST COAST states of Washington, Oregon and California have been known in recent years to be the area for TT champions and outstanding racing in this category. Each year Castle Rock, Washington, and Ascot Park in California host national TT events, but the Castle Rock track has the edge in that all the Californians enter and travel to Washington for the 30-lap event, yet few from the northwest will venture south to Ascot the following week for the yearly national in southern California.

JACK HALL
"AS LONG as there are mountains, there will be men to climb them," goes the old saying. Some do it on two feet, while others do it on two wheels. A case in point, the National Hill Climb at Muskegon, Michigan. Some 17,000 fans were on hand at this resort area on a near perfect day to watch 15 class "A" and 15 class "B" riders attempt to run the 51 percent grade which runs 340 feet to the crest of Mt. Garfield.

GARY NIXON, riding Yamaha and Triumph, won both the 25C and 500cc races at Greenwood Raceway at Des Moines, Iowa, but only after wheel-towheel battles with Cal Rayborn, riding Harley-Davidsons in both races. In fact, these riders put on two of the most hair-raising duels in recent years, and were clearly head and shoulders above everyone else, as they slowly moved away from the entire field.

BUILDING A TORQUE WRENCH

HARRISON J. SMITH
THE AVERAGE rider, performing occasional mechanical work on his motorcycle, often regards the absence of a torque wrench among his meager assortment of tools as an allowable misfortune. Proper torque setting, however, has more of an effect on engine performance than is normally suspected; especially in modern, high-performance, lightweight engines employing alloy diecastings.

HAIRPIN SPRING TESTER
Use of a new accessory with the Sturtevant Model SPT Valve and Clutch Spring Tester allows checking of hairpin-type springs used in such engines as the G50, Norton or Ducati. Those who already own this model may write to the P.A. Sturtevant Co., Dept. CW, Laboratory Division, 333 W. First St., Elmhurst, Ill., for a drawing showing how to fabricate the hairpin spring holder. The SPT tester is used without the accessory for checking conventional coil springs. The tester has a micrometer adjustment that permits settings within limits of .003 of an inch. The SPT checks springs from 0 to 400 pounds loading and will couple to any direct reading torque wrench.

OIL FOR BRIDGESTONE
Rockford Motors Inc. is now selling oil for two-cycle engines which is specially blended for the Bridgestone machines. The oil is suitable for all two-cycle engines requiring oil of low ash content, the distributors say, for lab tests showed that the Rockford oil produced a carbon residue of only .036 percent, which means cleaner combustion than with normal oils. The oil comes in several sizes: 8-ounce cans for 16:1 break-in mixture; 6.4-ounce for 20:1; or in quart size for mixing large amounts of fuel or topping up oil injection models. Rockford's address is 1911 Harrison Ave., Rockford, Ill.

HIGH-PIPE BENELLIS
America's growing predilection for riding for relaxation in the dirt is reflected in the large variety of street scramblers to be imported to these shores. The Benelli 125cc Cobra and the 250cc Barracuda "California" are two recent examples of such machinery. Fitted with high pipes and wide bars for occasional off-the-street use, these two models are imported by Cosmopolitan Motors, Inc., 5521 Wayne Ave., Philadelphia, Pa., 19144.

PLIER-GRIP WRENCH
A clever new addition to the world of hand tools is the one shown here, which combines the best aspects of a wrench and a lever-action plier. The gear arrangement gives an 8-to-1 leverage and gripping pressures over 1,000 pounds. To change the grip on a nut, one relaxes one's hold on the wrench, slips the jaws into position and tightens up again. The tool is available with three different jaw configurations: smooth "V" jaws for hex nuts; straight jaws for hex and square nuts; and "V" jaws with pipe teeth for extra gripping power. The "Gear-Grip," as it is called, is presently available in eight-inch size only and is sold through hardware and automotive stores. Direct inquiries to Neff Enterprises, Inc., Dept. CW, 1575 W. Rialto Ave., San Bernardino, Calif. 92410.

SPARK ARRESTER
Tabloc Accessories, well-known for their sprockets, is selling the Fire Flow Spark Arrester, which has been approved by the U.S. Forest Service. The device is also known as the Hutchins arrester, after its designer, Hugh Hutchins. The manufacturer claims that the arrester does not restrict high speed engine operation. It may be used in the city instead of a muffler. It weighs 2½ pounds and fits assorted machines from 50 to 750cc. The $21.95 price includes clamps and bushings. A dual extension for Honda scrambler pipes allows the use of one arrester, rather than two; it costs $4.95. More information is available by writing Tabloc Sprockets, Box 220-CW, Baldwin Park, Calif.

STA-LUBE OILS
Sta-Lube, Inc. has entered the motorcycle field with the introduction of two new blends of oil to its line. These are Sta-Lube Special 4-Cycle Motorcycle Oil (in SAE 30, 40 and 50) and Sta-Lube Special 2-Stroke Motorcycle Oil (SAE 20W-40). The oils are packaged in containers designed with the motorcyclist in mind. They are in plastic, with narrow neck and screw-on cap, which means, of course, that they are reusable and that one is not committed to leaving an uncapped half-used can lying around the garage. In addition to having a pouring handle, the containers are graduated, which greatly simplifies mixing. The idea seems so good that we're sure other manufacturers will follow suit. Sta-Lube's address is 19510CW S. Alameda St., Compton, Calif. 90224. ■

CARLO PERELLI
PERFECT WEATHER, an extremely tough course, 120 of Europe's top trials riders, good machinery and excellent organization made for a superb "Valli Bergamasche" three-day trial this year. The course was 480 miles long and something new awaited competitors at the end — a bonus points scrambles race to break ties.
