I have had several, rather strong letters in response to the statements made in "CYCLE WORLD Forges Ahead", in our March issue. It seems my saying that CYCLE WORLD is not trying to set trends or up-grade motorcycling was not taken in the light in which it was written.

A friend and I have had a rather long debate on whether a valve is bent on the opening or closing side of the cam. My friend contends that the valve is thrown into the piston; I say that at high rpm the valve does not have sufficient time to recover from its initial motion and is struck by the piston before it can close.

NOT LONG AGO, Honda motorcycles made their appearance, more or less simultaneously, on the racing circuits and the marketplaces of the world. It is not too far from the truth to say that, initially, they amused instead of amazed the motorcycle enthusiasts.

NOWHERE is the two-stroke engine more popular or more highly developed than in Germany, where the two-stroke operating cycle was invented. German airplanes, boats, automobiles, power-stations and, of course, motorcycles have — as so often as not — two-stroke engines.

THE 1962 200-Mile National Championship AMA road races will without doubt go down in history as one of the best road races of all times. Don Burnett of Danvers, Mass., riding a Triumph, and Dick Mann, El Sobrante, California, on the new Matchless G-50 CSR, staged the greatest two rider duel for seventy-one laps that has ever been run on a paved track in America.

GORDON H. JENNINGS
RECENTLY, we concluded a series of tests on a machine that is, in one sense at least, the motorcycle of tomorrow. The motorcycle was a Japanese Pointer, made by Shin Meiwa and imported by Pointer Sales of America in Parma, Ohio, and the feature that firmly linked it to the future was its brakes: disc-type units developed for Shin Meiwa by Airheart Products, of Van Nuys, California.

YOUNG Eddie Mulder, of Burbank, California, romped home the winner of the Four Aces MC Moose Run, AMA National Championship Hare & Hound, riding a Triumph. Mulder, an AMA District 37. Champion, led a veritable parade of Triumphs. They filled nine of the first ten places, and there were almost as many checkered blazers representing the Checkers MC. This club fronts probably more desert winners in California competition than any other, 7 out of the first 10 winners were California “Desert Rats”, the local name given to the Checkers MC. They were: Eddie Mulder; Max Switzer, 3rd place man; Roger Dietz, 4th place; Ken Knudsen, 5th place; Al Rogers, 6th place; Gene Hirst, 7th place; and Don Surplice, 9th place man (and the only one not riding a Triumph, he rides a Matchless).

The man is Hans-Georg Anscheidt, one of the few riders to ride so few cubic inches so fast, i.e., at the "ton" (100 mph) on the proper straights.
