Here is my subscription, and with it I am sending a few questions. How soon do you think that the “spark pump” ignition will be used on British motorcycles and scooters? Any news? Why are not flywheel magnetos used on larger displacement motorcycles, such as the 500cc — 650cc singles and twins?

“The days of the single are numbered.” So say the sage men of motorcycling, and they are probably right. At any given displacement level, the twin-cylinder engine will ultimately prove to be more powerful, smoother, lighter, more compact and very likely more reliable than a single.

ONE of the curious things about the present-day motorcycle sales patterns is that a potential buyer, walking into a dealer’s showroom, may be interested in anything from a miniscule “tiddler” right on up to a big, powerful “brute.” In fact, the very same customer (gaining experience and enthusiasm) may return several times over the course of a few years to progress, in stages, from one of these extremes to the other.

THE International Six Days Trial, run this year in the Wales section of Great Britain, marked the running of the newest edition of what is probably the toughest motorcycle competition in the World. Run over the roughest terrain, at one of the worst times of the year, weather disregarded, it draws entries from all over the motorcycling world.

BRAKING FUNDAMENTALS

GORDON H. JENNINGS
HUMAN NATURE being what it is, it was probably inevitable that “go” should receive more attention than “stop” in the development of the motorcycle. Indeed, if we consider how minor a sales point is good braking, compared with the qualities of acceleration and speed, it is a real tribute to the public-spirited outlook of the manufacturers that the brakes on the modern motorcycle work as well as they do.

RAIN, heavy and prolonged, forced cancellation of the Southern California Season Championship TT race at Ascot Park in Gardena, bringing an abrupt and rather anti-clamactic end to the popular, J. C. Agajanian-promoted events. Dick Hammer was declared AMA District 37 champion for the second straight time although Dick Dorresteyn was within striking distance of the So. Calif. title and emerged as high point TT rider for the entire nation.

LIKE the ad says, man, it’s new on the scene from the Go-Kart Mfg. Co., in Azusa, Calif. The Gasser is sort of a motor scooter, sort of a mini-bike, sort of like nothing we have ever seen before. The Go-Kart Company probably needs no introduction, but we will anyway.

Dear CW: The first issue of CYCLE WORLD impressed me as being well balanced and informative, and the equal of magazines selling for 50ȼ. The color photo on the cover is excellent. Best wishes for the success of the magazine. Your editorial comments on the freeway horsepower law certainly coincided with my ideas 100%, closely paralleling what I have written editors of other motorcycle publications on the subject.
