Among the numerous air lines which connect the principal cities of Europe with one another there is one which stands out from the rest, not only by reason of its far flung services, but also because it represents an interesting solution of international air navigation.
Detailed Description of the Latest Aircraft Engines Produced By the Packard Motor Car Co.
The new Packard aircraft engines are built in two sizes, the model 1500 rated at 500 b.hp., and the model 2500 rated at 800 b.hp. The engines are of almost identical design except in size and were developed concurrently to fill the demand for the entire range of water cooled engines as it exists today.
<p>The French Solex company which manufactures carburetors offered a prize of fifty thousand francs for the first man to fly from Paris to Rouen on less than 3 kg. of gasoline. The distance between these, two points is approximately 100 km. and it was thought that there would be no competitors for the prize.</p>
The action of the rudder is sufficiently simple and direct not to require much comment. The rudder controls the yaw and to this extent its action is similar to the action of rudders of seagoing vessels and in lighter-than-air craft. Contrary to these vessels, however, the yaw of the airplane does not necessarily produce a turn, which usually requires proper coordination of elevator, aileron and rudder controls.
